Star Ocean 5 character gets less-sexy underwear 'in Fear of Western Criticism'

I don't really mind being tossed under the bus when it leads to hilarious phrases like DO NOT CONSORT WITH FOREIGNERS

Oh make no mistake, I think those lines are hilarious, but I just don't like that they came because the devs can't handle the backlash themselves when it was their change for no real reason. If they wanted to make the change then that's fine, but neither I nor you are responsible for their insane paranoia.

I'm imagining it. It doesn't happen.

But it did. The entire NES/SNES era was defined by censorship, because America was seen as conservative at the time.

It sucked ass. Who actually wants that? All those articles on how they changed our games back then certainly affected my experience, so when I see it re-emerge I'm like "hey this is stupid".

Can someone explain me what is actually wrong with this? They only made the pant like, 25% bigger. Those reactions are pretty dumb, seriously.

This entire situation is pretty fuckin' dumb tbqh.

People critizising panties that you have to go actively out of your way to see are dumb.
Devs making the Panties 25% bigger as a result are dumb.
People beeing outraged by panties beeing slightly bigger are dumb.
People on NeoGAF raging about people on 2Chan raging about "stupid foreigner" that rage about virtual panties, are dumb.

We're all dumb.

From that picture, I can't tell a difference. I don't think many people would have noticed if SE didn't say anything. Should have kept their mouth shut. I don't get the edit to begin with, honestly. KH had similar upskirt shots and westerners didn't give a shit. You had to go out of your way to see it, and most people didn't even know you could see them in the game. The characters were way younger in that too. I want to know who these "oversees reactors" were that demanded it be changed. The "Social Studies Warriors" didn't seem to give a shit from what I've seen. I wish Japanese developers would stop blaming westerners for making random changes to their game, especially when there's zero outrage to begin with.

Think about this: GTA games in Japan were often censored so that you cannot kick a person on the ground and civilians wouldn't drop money when killed. What would everybodies reaction be if Rockstar made that edit to every version of the game, just to adjust to Japan's market?

This is a good point. The comment saying "make two different versions" also has a point.

I can't really blame those reactions to be honest. We have way too many pseudo-puritans here in the west and they are quite vocal as well.Just look at the discussions for games such as Bayonetta or Dragon's Crown.

Personally i'm against all types of censorship but i don't care about small "cosmetic" changes like this.It will not affect my enjoyment of the game one bit.

To be honest, I don't blame the comments from Japanese gaming fans.

There's just too many whiners on our side that doesn't deserve to have games like this, or to be called gamers.

Lol. But, like, no one cares about the panty stuff at all. So the girl likes to wear some kind of thong or smaller sized panties, no one cares. Plus she's 18.

It's entirely a non-issue.

As for the hypothetical GTA scenario, those are pretty massive changes compared with making panties slightly bigger, lol.

This is such a publicity stunt it hurts. The only complaint I ever heard about Miki was her fucking face. They couldn't touch that but apparently her panties needed an extra centimeter from an angle no one could even see.

Who, of any real repute, still has a horse in trying to link violence in media to violence in real life?

Trying to depict the west as if it's on shaky ground because violence is a common characteristic of our media is some weak shit.

well yeah.

so then what is the big deal with sexualized designs then? Often the main thing brought up is that it creates poor treatment of women and promotes said shitty behavior. When in reality the same chucklefucks who shot up schools where just losers then and the same losers that harassed peeps like children now, no? Neither is the games fault. So why does one need to be changed and the other doesn't?

It simply comes down to some people not liking it but realizes that just not liking it isn't enough to have it go awayt....nor do they want to admit that because it would look selfish. So stronger words and causes are placed behind it. Ones that are hard to deny. It is the same tactics used with Violence in games. People dying is a hard thing to say fuck you to really.

Thats just how I see it atleast...

but regardless, this isn't the hill to die on. It is a minimal change at the end of the day.

At DOA extreme thread I was told by gaffers that KT must not be chickened by risk of backlash, but since SE followed I think the trend would continue. Those companies just cannot afford to take risks from Westerners when Western market is far bigger than Japanese one.

I'm working on an industry totally unrelated to any sort of entertainment but my company keeps emphasizing to avoid any kind of backlash when working on foreign market. And it isn't limited to Western market either.

Square just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (I'm an expert), bla bla bla

Square Enix just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese otaku culture (I'm an expert), bla bla bla

Square Enix and tri-Ace just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese pantsu culture (I'm an expert), bla bla bla

We done with the meme from 2010 yet? Or we gonna see one of these every other page?

i wonder at which point we in the west will get japanese games with women in traditional arabian clothes.

its our own fault that this is called slutty. even worse, its a fantasy-themed game, not a realistic call'oh'doody game why are people harshly judging into that direction :(

in the end its a game, where is the problem?

i dont mind having this in game, changing it to diapers makes it less appealing.

iam not a person who would be interested in this kind of feature, but first announcing something, then "censoring" it for the broader audience is simply nuts. especially if the people who are complaining wont buy the game anyway.

So Star Ocean 5 is an Adult Game. ( ≖‿≖)
Every game should be an "adult game" for some, I guess.

Funny that "adult" is the adjective used for a game where teenage girls show as much skin as possible. Guess I'm not mature enough, heh.

This is such a publicity stunt it hurts. The only complaint I ever heard about Miki was her fucking face. They couldn't touch that but apparently her panties needed an extra centimeter from an angle no one could even see.

Watch them change it back a week later and be treated as heroes.

Foreigner crisis adverted.

Jesus Christ, it's a joke about porn being called Adult Movies. Lighten up.

It's a bad publicity stunt if it is. It's just going to make Japanese Otaku not buy the game and rail against it.

And guess what happened? The market grew and tastes changed and the problem got solved. That continues today.

And it can shift back to an era of self-censorship if we just say "I'm fine with this".

It's right to voice "don't self-censor your game" even if it's something as dumb as panties.

They should go the extra mile and give the Western release the original panties and watch 2ch explode.

well yeah.

so then what is the big deal with sexualized designs then?
It'd be boring as heck if all games were as violent as Manhunt 2. It's boring as heck that it's actually challenging to find a modern JRPG without otaku pandering.

I guess we just disagree on this. I think designers make choices. There is no evidence whatsoever that people are losing their freedom. People make what they want to. People make what they think others will buy. This is a non-issue. It's a tempest in a teapot invented by the dev.

Her spells breathes through her skin, guys.

I really wonder at this point if Japanese devs are making up these dumb reasons for laughs.
I can't let this go

Celine Jules, Star Ocean 2 symbologist

Nel Zelpher, Star Ocean 3 symbologist

Starting in Star Ocean 2, having exposed skin while being a practicioner of magic has been a thing. It's not a hard rule, and might even just be a racial trait considering Leon never had to, nor Noel or Rena(who also could use healing symbology, technically something that was supposed to be racial then tossed aside i guess). Sophia escaped this by being a magic baby.

I don't think they should have to make excuses for their characters to wear what they want them to wear. As long as Fiore escapes the gaijin storm everything is fine. I just dislike this entire motion that 'this character's showing skin in a way that I don't like' keeps coming up.

Instead of moaning about fictional anime girls showing too much skin, I wish there was more moaning for more fictional anime dudes showing their skin too.

I always found the outrage over this to be hypocritical. I mean just look at wonder woman in the recent Batman vs Superman movie.

Have you seen the movie? Wonder woman looks like the farthest thing from an amazonian, battle hardened invincible warrior, instead she's some rail thin supermodel, because hollywood.

We done with the meme from 2010 yet? Or we gonna see one of these every other page?

CertifiedFP, Daft Punk and Dennis just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about NeoGAF meme culture (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on reddit where you can become successful by repeating memes. If you use a meme on NeoGAF, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the NeoGAF users, after hearing about this, are not going to want to read CertifiedFP's, Daft Punk's and Dennis's posts ever again. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but CertifiedFP, Daft Punk and Dennis have alienated an entire forum with this meme.

CertifiedFP, Daft Punk and Dennis, publicly apologize and edit your posts or you can kiss your forum status goodbye.

that seems like a you problem.

There are levels to violence when it comes to games. So if someone is as adverse to violence as you are to "otaku pandering", I imagine it will be just as tough for them to find games to appeal to them..

Not liking something doesn't make it okay for those who do to have to have their shit changed is all I am saying.

again this isn't the hill to fight this battle on so fuck it....

Well, take heart, we still got Korea. I really don't see them changing their games to appease perceived western complaints.

The overreaction is dumb. But it's probably just a bunch of teens on 2Ch. Whatever.

I kinda understand where they're coming from but at the same time the change is pretty much fucking nothing. It was hardly anything to begin with and no one would have noticed or said anything about it. The whole thing is just ridiculous.

I guess Japanese devs/pubs are just really paranoid now. I wonder if they actually think this would have affected sales in some way.

I don't get this. Like, I don't see the big deal. It doesn't matter if she is 14 or 18 or a 1000 year old space dragon, those pics in the OP are what this hubbub is about?

1) there is barely a difference, if anything it looks like one butt cheek has a sort of shorts like design in the new version.
2) why does this matter? this isn't a game where panties and clothing are important, it's not a game where sexualisation is a thing. It's something you would see if you put the camer in a position to look up a virtual girls skirt.
3) You have the other witch woman in the weird clown spandax thing with alternating diamonds cut out so you can see her butt cheeks and that is staying in, you can still see butt flesh if you want

And I agree, games focus too much on violence. And it's also true that JRPGs (and maybe Japanese games in general) are focusing a bit too much on otaku pandering.

Well, they are not wrong... I'm really disappointed that our western society (or just vocal part of it) is so sensitive about anything sex-related in gaming (while ignoring the rest of the "problems") but that's the way it is. Making two separate versions as they've mentioned would be way to go tbh.
