Ice Age 5: $90M domestic. $800M overseas :P

I think that Ice Age 5 will be a mild disappointment in China like Panda 3 was. It will probably still clear $100M there though.

Top 5 is going to be really Disney heavy this year, even if some of the wildcards make it.

Marvel needs a WW movie to succeed. All they got is Carol.

Captain Marvel has things stacked against it either way.

Maybe they can turn Captain Marvel into Civil War 2. The heroes are once again torn apart when new recruit Carol Danvers kills Ant Man for spying on her in the shower. Boys vs Girls!

Surprise you didn't say Cyborg.

Their most recognizable super heroines are tied up elsewhere: Invisible Woman, Jean Grey, and Storm are the first 3 that come to mind for me, and they're all owned by Fox. Even then, they're all known more for their role in a team than standing on their own. It's an unfortunate situation and one that they can't easily fix at this point, as all of their stand-alone heroes have been around for decades.

Is Elektra that niche? Can she stand alone without daredevil?

The last time they tried that shit died on the viiiiine

They may have a shot with Elodie Yung, though, I thought she did great. Apparently she was up for Wonder Woman too, now that would've pissed people off even more

Spider-Gwen will save them.

Black Widow would do well if they don't wait too long. ScarJo is damn popular ATM.

But they already practically made one according to Feige.
April 2014: Captain America: The Winter Soldier is practically a Black Widow movie anyway.
But people would ask me on the floor of the Thor: The Dark World junket, “Are you’re doing a Black Widow movie?” And part of me wanted to say, “Well, we did, and it’s called Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Wait until you see it!”
It's not going to happen at this point.

Their best chance for a Black Widow movie was Phase 2, and they switched it out for GOTG.

Maybe after all the Infinity War stuff is over? Have her try to pick up the pieces after shit goes to hell

Nah Aquaman

I would put hard money on that

Do not doubt the king.

furious 7 was a damn mess. don't care too much for james wan, though he did at least give me death sentence. he's got far more experience than scott derrickson at least who's on doctor strange.

we'll see how both movies pan out. i don't get why these middle of the mall horror directors are being sought after but in wan's case he's had some big successes under his boot, so that makes a bit more sense.

i can't really blame him for furious 7 though, that whole thing had to be retooled after walker's death. and he gave us a beautiful ending that almost made me forget the disappointing film preceding it.

I'm not convinced a recognizable character is necessary. We all talk about how Marvel Studios turned Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man into successful films. If Marvel Studios is worried about the risk, it doesn't need to be $170mil. Correct me if I'm mistaken, lowest they've gone is $130mil for Ant-Man. Fox went conservative with Deadpool at $60mil.

I don't think these people are first choices or picked specifically for the studio's confidence in them to have a unique and amazing take on the material. I think these are the people who are available, willing, and not offensive. I mean, look at who's directing the Flash... If Lord and Miller said yes to actually directing it, do you think WB would have turned them down to get someone like that? I don't think so!

I think the only major "Get" for upcoming comic book films is Marvel getting Ryan Coogler to do Black Panther.

I just wonder who Michael B. Jordan will play in that.

EDIT: Holy crap. Chadwick Boseman is 39?! I thought he was late 20s to early 30s at best. Damn, man.

Taika...can't look up his last name atm, guy directing Thor 3. He is an interesting choice. What We Do in the Shadows is a great comedy. It's hard to imagine I'm anticipating a Thor film yet here we are.

that guy just seems like a director for hire though in this case, it's so transparent. i'd be a lot more excited to see thor 3 if he was writing it too with jermaine clement (it would be weird though).

still i'll check it out on rental for queen blanchett.

I don't think he's entirely a "director for hire" for Thor 3, given how all the directors who were in the running for the job were comedy directors. Marvel was clearly going after something there. I have no idea what... but it's... something. Lol.

He's not that old, the Wikipedia page is wrong.

Edit: I saw it listed some other places but I remember when he got cast in Black Panther that there was a report about his listed age being wrong.

Road Trip Comedy as Thor and Banner/the Hulk attempt to stop Rangarok from happening.

I mean, Guardians was a big success, and considering that Thor 3 is going to likely involve all 9 Realms, I can see them going for a more light-hearted tone after Thor 2's more "dramatic" plot. I mean, it's the death of the Asgardians, but some of the best parts of Thor was Thor reacting to Earth. Getting to flip that and have Banner react to all this insane visual stuff is going to be great.

His last two movies: Furious 7 is 81% Fresh and The Conjuring is 86% Fresh.

Aquaman is in very good hands. They are lucky to have him.

I'll say this for Wan, I thought the two Insidious films were poor but dude is a damn fine director. Like I can't see anyone else doing any better with those scripts. No idea how that'll translate to Aquaman, but as long as the script is good he'll stick the landing.

It seems "it doesn't take itself seriously" isn't Jeff Goldstein's only absurd defense of BvS this week:

http://fortune.com/2016/03/29/batman-v-superman-box-office-rules/?iid=sr-link7

Pulling in $420.1 million worldwide, Batman v Superman toppled Marvel’s The Avengers to become the highest-grossing global superhero movie debut of all time (and seventh most successful opening of any film to date).

“That’s about $100 million more than we thought we’d ever get,” admitted Jeff Goldstein, executive vice president of theatrical distribution for the movie’s distributor Warner Bros. “I can’t believe we hit a number that large.”

I know studios lowball their projections all the time to make the actual performance look better, but they were expecting $100 million less than that? From the simultaneous worldwide opening of the first-ever Batman/Superman film?

Who - besides the author of this puff piece, anyway - is gullible enough to believe that?

was Seth Grahame-Smith actually confirmed for the Flash? don't remember seeing an actual announcement

I think that was based on reports from industry websites. Warner Bros never announced anything other then Ezra Miller being cast as The Flash/Barry Allen. I don't believe he ever confirmed anything either. It was similar to Phil Lord And Chris Miller being the ones doing the actual story. Just reports but no confirmation from anyone.

12M for Tuesday. Not great, not bad. It's basically following the same drops as F7.

So if it follows F7s pattern, that's just under $400m, if it does a Man of Steel and gets a 2.5 multi then we are looking at $415. So basically it all depends on late legs, and with no major competition until it's 4th weekend it has a chance.
