PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Where are we at?

We are very deep into the anger phase right now

That one makes me laugh a bit given I'm setting up to entirely replace my 2012 computer this year to take advantage of all the games pushing their graphics forward.

If people want the static PC experience, keeping the regular PS4 for the full six years should fit. It will just be like playing on low to medium settings.
This is what I got from this. Either people don't understand this, or perhaps they just don't like the idea of having a 'lesser' version.

Some games, BIG games, could also be PS4K exclusive.

Like...just imagine how much hell there'd be IF (MAJOR hypothetical here) something like GTA6 was PS4K/XB1.2 exclusive. The market would be destroyed if that happened.

They released GTA 5 for the last gen systems about a month before the new ones came out... The idea that third parties are going to abandon 50 million PS4s to make exclusive games for the PS4K makes no sense. We just lived through years of 3rd parties not willing to give up cross gen, now they're going to abandon a userbase for what?

So I'm screwed then if I have a regular PS4 since games will be made for PS4K and when played on a PS4 they will take a big hit?
You are probably considering those 4K games running at PC ultra settings when you say that. At Medium to Low, they can absolutely run on a x2 PS4. They'll look like late 360 games, but at a magical 4K res!

Hmm.... Guess it is time to sell my PS4 as it does seem the 4K will be the preferred platform for PSVR. Not the direction I wanted to see consoles go but so be it. I have enough devices that need frequent updates. At least those devices provide far more utility. Will hang onto my PSVR preorder for now (rumors of PC support) but I will probably let that go later and roll that money into Vive or Rift instead.

It'll be like playing at 20 fps more like.

So games will work on my launch model at 20-30FPS? Might not be too mad about this stopgap then. I'm okay with that FPS if it's pushing thr OG hardware.

Thanks for the megaton. Stillanti-consumer BS, but at least we know more now.

I don't understand people doing this unless they really only care about PC games. The only reason I am building a PC now is because MS is releasing all of their exclusives their. If they weren't I wouldn't be doing it.

Yeah because there were no great games on the PC prior to the glory of our lord and savior the Windows 10 store.

Jesus. I assumed the 4K upscaling and better VR preformance were both givens, but the idea that actual retail games would have significant performance difference between SKUs... That's diabolical. Oh, and then you consider how many PS4 owners were told to 'just wait' for major first party games like GoW4....

This is the sort of blatantly anti-consumer move that could burn a shitton of good will with a base that was only just won back.

At very least, Microsoft's plan sounds like you'd be able to play all of their shit on PC, and just dodge the console cycle altogether.

you buy a $200-300 card, you are typically in good shape for at least 3 years unless you have to always be on the cutting edge with maximum settings.
This confuses me about the 'move to PC' people. So buying a new card for $300 is ok after 3 years but spending the same(ish) on a mid gen refresh is not?

for the people who are anti ps4k, why? Is it because someone else will be able to play a "better" version? I'm all for mid life refreshes and I don't feel it will cause anybody with an original PS4 any problems

Why multiplatform games already do this on console vs pc? People keep acting like this is something strange but this is just like putting a new gpu in your pc. The old gpu will still work just with medium settings. However some of the vr games may be exclusive since it needs so much more power for some of them.

A lot of games are designed at certain framerates and it's not always as simple as flipping a switch. Some studios have their cutscenes rendered for example at 30 FPS however in this case they would have to do it at both 60 and 30.

The fact that he talk about 'Deep Down' still being in development sound like this news is an April fools joke to me.

Checking Deep Down's wiki page led to a quote with Ono that's still in development from Feb 2015 (google translate):

http://www.4gamer.net/games/289/G028968/20150203066/

Ono said: "deep down" is, it seems it takes a little more time. Although the street seems to be referred to as a "how was discontinued development", because there is no such thing (laughs). It might be a little earlier, but what was to show you before we would like to show off a different appearance at all. In fact, vision is greater than when I was first announced in. Rather, perhaps it was not good in the previous initiative.

I thought it was dead as well.

What would be the equivalent to "2x" power. I think the PS4 was a modified radeon 7870 or something.

Would that be like putting a r9 390 or a 970 in there?

I did some quick benchmark comparisons and it seems like they tend to close to double the framerate on stuff with anandtech bench.

They need to do 3 things for it to work for me:
1) Upgrade program for those who own a PS4.
2) Games are still made for the PS4 as the main target, then ported over to the PS4K.
3) They don't do any PS4K exclusive games.

Really worried about how they'll implement it. If they develop games for the PS4K as the main target then just port over to the PS4 I'd imagine a lot of people would be pissed. There also shouldn't be any major gameplay differences, keep the changes to a higher resolution, better AA, lighting and higher FPS. Online mode should ev running at the same frame rate to be honest.

This.

Although my main genre of choice is jrpg, so I shouldn't have to worry too much about 4K exclusives, but there is 0% chance my wife lets me upgrade with our family budget, Oh well, backlog of PS3 games for life.

I mean if this shit is real, the least they could promise is the same games and performance only @1080p. If the 4K games look and run better(highly doubtful) they are going to piss off a lot of people. Iterative consoles is beginning to sound like a mess already.

If this is true I'm furious and Sony can go fuck themselves. All after building up pure goodwill this gen, here they are throwing piss all over it.

DEVASTATED at the idea of PS4 games running poorly on the system, that is not how to treat your customers, no sense in at all.

Why would Sony do this to us? This is either gonna be very successful or be a terrible decision in the long run. I just don't want to believe anymore........

So real talk, is there any reason to buy PSVR for your normal PS4 if the PS4K sounds like it will be significantly better for performance, offer potentially more media content and exclusive games (potentially like GT Sport requiring PS4k for VR)?

Nice. I dont care about this "ps4.5" but I hope it means we'll see ps4 sub200€ soon.

I just bought a ps3 last year, so dont mind waiting a couple of years.

Why are people surprised that game X wont look the same on the vanilla PS4 as on the PS4k?

I mean its already happening between PS4 and Xbone or between PS4 and PC.

So yeah. And a lot games are already making sacrifices...

You want Uncharted 4 MP in 1080p and with a way more constant 60fps? Play it on the PS4k.

Thats how it is

This is some good stuff! Still expecting this to be an elaborate NeoGAF prank. Just need someone to 3D print the console casing and we have liftoff!

Whoa, didn't even see the list of games until now. If GOW4 is God of War 4, having exclusive enhancements on PS4K would be... pretty major. I don't know how to feel about that.
