PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Games that will target the 4K?

Nope. I'm out. Not a good move at all. Been saying the whole way that I'm cool with Sony/MS going this route if they target the base spec.

But not targeting base spec? Bad move.

There is literally no reason for anyone to give a fuck about optimising for OG PS4 if this is real.

  1. More hassle for devs when they can just optimise for the more powerful system and turn down sliders til it "works"
  2. Sony is sure as hell not going to encourage good optimisation for OG when they stand to make money selling PS4Ks
  3. History has already shown us time and time again that most pubs don't give a fuck about acceptable performance standards with down-ports, as evidenced by the myriad of dreadful cross-gen releases that we JUST escaped from

Seriously. This gen JUST started. Such a terrible idea.

For the people saying "more options" - there is already an option for you where you can pay as much as you want for as much power as you want. For the people saying the phone cycle works - phone sales are DRAMATICALLY slowing down because they've got to a point where people don't care about the improvements because they're happy where they are. This is a terrible, terrible idea.

Not true. Most of the install base is on PS4 1.0. Are people forgetting this? Sony is giving an extra option for people who want it, and if enough people buy in to make it relevant, then devs will take more advantage of it. If not, then devs will not waste the time and just make it compatible with OG PS4 because that is where the biggest install base is.

So... that's why we don't have a release date yet for persona 5... 'cause will be renamed Persona 4K and be a launch tittle for PS4K...

This seems like it absolutely would divide the userbase.

You cannot honestly tell me devs would only use this for better FPS. Not a chance.

Down with this right here.

If the industry goes this route conside me out unless APIs become unified or agreed too for at least a decade. I have no real interest in buying consoles that most are specced for devs/publishers/manufacturers desires and not consumers. Sony basically is gonna get 1k easy out of certain sony consumers just because they will want to keep up, which means certain gamers have spent more money for less power than at least 3 of my new pcs since the PS4 came out. Told some of you this con was coming and on top of the DLC/Microtransaction shit I see the industry has forgotten the part they are there to please the consumer at some point not just figure out ways to get more money for meager efforts.

Hope the convenience is worth it to certain consumers. Only took 30 years to watch industry forget one of the biggest lessons of the 80's. I want better performance but devs will in a heartbeat for their own selfish reasons not leave the brute forcing on the table. This should be agreement sony if a game can't hold 30fps with the same assets and effect complexity on a regular PS4 it don't get certified. You have a way to force a whole host of performance issues to the table with this move.

I won't be able to afford this, but I'm OK with that. FFXV and UC4 are out this year and they'll run fine on my current PS4. Horizon Zero Dawn probably won't, but I'll live.

I doubt Sony is counting on existing PS4 owners to hop on this day one. They'll probably be gunning for people who would be buying a PS4 in that time period anyway. I would upgrade to PS4K 6-12 months later when it gets a discount or bundled with a game I want.

I don't buy the argument that OG PS4 games won't be optimized. Developers will still want to sell to the forty million existing PS4 users.

People, listen to hot ryu.

Are you comprehending what you're reading? PS4 games will still look and play the same, why would they get worse? Think, man!
That is talking about ALREADY RELEASED titles. Think about it like this: look at the graphics and performance devs were able to squeeze out of the PS360 when it was their primary focus; now compare that to the shitty cross-gen doe ports we got when the PS4/XB1 were released.

That is the situation everyone is worried about, and there is pretty much no reason to think this would be any different based on the state that many games are CURRENTLY released in with only 3 platforms.

Quantum Break, Killer Instinct, and Forza 6 all run fine on the Xbox One. They all run and look amazing on a high end PC too.

Pretty sure the developers can handle it. Such an easy concept to understand.

All of them Xbox One games ported to PC, of course they run well on the console. Stupid comparison. What you should be looking at is games made for the New 3DS and cross-gen titles.

The gadget market has already accepted this shit. Years ago. People upgrade their phones every year, or every two years. People saying this isn't going to work out for Sony aren't paying attention.

So? The console industry is different. Phone are all digital you know, and yet when MS tried DRM route they got spanked by the consumers and competition, and rightfully so. Not every electronic industry is comparable. I am not in any way saying this will flop, but the phone industry and console industry are different.

It's super funny that Sony went from the "10 year" lifespan plan for the PS3 to the "make it irrelevant as quickly as possible" plan for the PS4.

Its especially astounding considering how successful Ps4 has been. Why mess with a good thing? Leave it the hell alone. Wait for Ps5 to do true 4k. Right now a GPU twice as powerful is still nowhere near enough for 4k gaming. So all it will do is give people a better framerate at 1080p and piss off everyone who already bought a Ps4.

Or, make a rule that any game that runs at 1080p60 on Ps4.5 has to run at 900p60 on OG Ps4. That would minimize the damage to me.

Rockstar STILL NOT released a game on this gen except for Remaster and we should get a new gen this year? WTF

GTA 5 came out on PS3 / 360 less than 2 months before the PS4 was out. Why is this surprising? They are the last company on earth thats going to prioritize these half-steps over the tens of millions of existing consoles.

LOL at people saying they're moving to PC.

You guys do know that PC gaming updates faster than consoles right? You're gonna be forking out more or same in the long run.

I upgrade once every 5 years, if that. My current PC will be more powerful than the PS4K when it comes out, and will continue to be for the rest of the gen.

Being Bish approved isn't a guarantee.

I thought Bish approved just meant the poster was in a position to know the information they share. Not that it means it is 100% always accurate.

If the information is true, it came from a GameStop meeting - or I thought that was the employer of OP based on previous posts/threads by them.

Being Bish approved isn't a guarantee.

Being Bish-checked asserts that the person is someone who might logically know what they're purporting to know, not that their information is correct, yes.

That said, I'm feeling really good about this one.

What's stopping them from releasing one more upgrade after 2 years thus making PS4K outdated.
If this is true, then I am DONE with console gaming. I will stick to PC gaming.

I've gotten quality time out of my ps4 and continue to do so. That said this is a direct response to consumers and devs complaining that these consoles are powerful enough. No doubt the industry is heading this way unless there is a complete rejection.

If these things come every 3 years. I'm down

People love the iphone comparisson, so
we'll talk again, when PS5 is announced at E3 2018 (launch fall same year). If not, I'm ready for crow.

nvidia's flops are not "the same" as amd's flops.

3.6TF is not in the 970 ballpark, its more in the 380 ballpark. Still pretty big upgrade, it can guarantee 1080p native plus 60fps in games (probably).

Also native 4k is 4x1080p (not 2x as some of you mentioned) so we wont see much of those.

It's not liked you're forced to upgrade your GPU every year or whatever; you can just dial some settings down to maintain your target performance and likewise crank up and downsample older titles after upgrading.

While - if the info in this thread is to be believed - you're at the mercy of developers/publishers on both sides.
Most likely degrading performance in newer titles without any way to compensate for on PS4 and no immediate upgrade on PS4K.
And you better bet most developers won't (or aren't allowed to) invest money into updating games which have already exceeded their sales lifespawn.

But you will be forced to now. Maybe not every year but faster than what most pc gamers are used to. Usually you would wait for the entire console generation to upgrade our pc but now with .5 consoles coming out faster pc gamers are going to have to keep up with it. They will need to upgrade or risk losing bragging right to graphics on consoles now they are not restricted to long generation time of 7+ years now to 3 years.

Honestly I don't know how I feel about this. I don't think I'm going to buy this thing and I'm worried about the performance of PS4 games made to take advantage of the PS4K. If they're solid and just look worse, that's fine, but I'm going to be pissed if they start slacking on actual performance (ie inconsistent or sub 30fps framerates).

I feel the same about an Xbox One.5 but I'll just buy the games on PC if performance starts regularly taking a hit.

It's sad for me that there are no Rockstar titles in this gen.. (except Remaster)

In January I just couldn't figure out why Sony didn't announce a 4K blu ray player, now I see why. After this, Samsung wont be able to justify charging $400 for a substandard player, could be an early shot in the arm for the format.

FWIW, ~2x GPU power sounds reasonable for something released this year.

It's also not nearly enough to run any challenging games which run on the "normal" PS4 at 1080p at 4k. (Just to make that clear)

This is really sounding like a PS5 with those massive hardware upgrades.
Massive? A traditional console generation is closer to a factor 10 performance difference than factor 2.

It could change console adoption rate for the better or it could fail spectacularly. Either way I'm very much looking forward to E3 this year.
Are you comprehending what you're reading? PS4 games will still look and play the same, why would they get worse? Think, man!
Agreed. It's not like this isn't a thing today. All multiplatform games look and run better on a plethora of PC systems. Only thing changing will be PS4 exclusives that will now run better on the PS4K.

Yep I don't need to here the details but I'm betting you guys got a little bit more proof for this one than normal. Thats a big claim, big time OP there.
