PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Will be interesting to see Microsofts reaction. Because if they don't do anything and keep the Xbox One it will be hard to get new customers once the PS4k is out. Multiplattform titles will just pull away and they would have to sell at an even lower price around 199$. Why buy a 300$ Xbox when I can get the twice as powerful PS4k for 399$?

You can't really compare the two. A phone is still a phone and the cost is often offset by the lower cost in software or mobile phone plan available through a provider.

it is not offset by the phone plan. you pay more. if you only want to believe you are saving money just put your ps4k on a credit card and forget to pay it.

If the OP is real, fuck Sony with a passion.
That's completely retarded, they started awesome with PS4 and they're gonna alienate everyone who jumped on a PS4 early.

How is Sony alienating you if all PS4/4K software is intercompatible? You get to still play the games but it won't run as nice as the better console. No matter what happens- OG PS4 Battlefront will always be 900p, From's games will always have frame pacing issues, and the console will never run Drive Club at 60 FPS.

If you can pay for a btter console that eliminates those barriers why would you be upset?

I rather do that. Its cheaper. I upgraded my GPU last year after using the one before that for 4 years. Cost me less than half of what I spent on PS4. And it plays almost all multi plats much better than PS4.

That's because you were competing with long ass generational consoles that were like 7 years old behind. Now that incremental updates on consoles will occur do you really think that you'll be able to match them to get ultra settings that cheaply again?

Glad I waited. Can't wait for Knack Remastered.

photoshopping the future...

This whole scenario feels like an endgame now. I've always said that this might be the last gen with 3 major players. If true, this will fuck NX from all sides, it's WiiU all over again, sorry Nintendo believers, but please explain to me what NX can do now to counter this and VR? (I'll have to add that this may turn me off from consoles completely, before someone pulls the fanboy card)

Sony is basically saying "all-in"

Are you kidding?

Right now I am considering cancelling my PSVR preorder if this proves to be true. If so, I will be greatly interested in seeing what Nintendo has to offer.

Nintendo is releasing a new console potentially after 4 years on the market.
It is effectively rendering the Wii U obsolete.

The PS4K will likely be out after 4 years and won't render your old system obsolete. The PS4 will still be getting new games.

Wii U is already obsolete. What do you want them to do with a dead system?

I'm considering selling my PS4(first time selling a console), to buy this PS4K, but... the only thing that will be holding me is P.T.

That's going to be tough...

I still don't get the WHY behind this.

Sales are great, so it can't be that. Devs don't seem to be demanding this. 4K market isn't anywhere near big enough for this to be worth it yet.

**Is PSVR going to be a mess without this?

**Are they preempting/reacting to something Nintendo and/or Microsoft is releasing this year and trying to get a jump on it?

**Are they just being arrogant?

I don't get it. Makes zero sense to me.

With the launch of the NX they probably want their own new console to show off, and PSVR performance probably really needs the PS4K to be solid.

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.
Fuck you, Sony. I'm going full PC next gen.

It will alienate all the install Base PS4 build.

It is a bad move and I'm not liking it but I think this will work out and Ps4K will be succesful

My personal guess (and this is a guess) would be that they heard from developers that Microsoft was doing this, decided they had to do this to not be behind on hardware quality for three years, and then decided on the specific 4K angle because it fit really well with their 4K television push this Fall even if it makes zero sense from a game perspective.

Double the PS4's GPU ain't giving you native 4K gaming. If you think big budget titles are going to run at 4K natively, you're nuts.

Double the PS4's GPU probably isn't even enough to increase both fidelity and give you a smooth 60fps. Why would they call such a modest performance increase the PS5?

Calm down people. Your PS4 experience will remain exactly the same as it is now, 1080p and barely 30fps.

Now go enjoy the $792.00 Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge you just got, which replaced the S6 you bought last year.

The tantrums are entertaining, they take me back to the 2nd grade.

An r9 290, a 3 year old card, is 4.8 tflops, and can handle 4k 30 fps. Architectural improvements and coding for only 2 sets of specs (optimization), should comfortably allow a 2x as powerful ps4 gpu to do 4k 30 fps, with modern aaa titles.

For me to less details about the console so it's not true.
2x GPU? why no specific details, I'm sure the meeting was longer than you wrote.

If it was a sales meeting, no they wouldn't give specific specs, because that doesn't matter to consumers. They would give the general idea on performance increase.

If you tell someone who walks into a store that it has a 4TF GPU they won't care. They won't even know what you are saying.

If you say its 2x as powerful as a PS4, they get an idea of what you mean.

I guess Jeff Rigby was right. The Ps4 will eventually do 4k. Not happy that they went this route. But maybe this will be my second unit since I was gonna buy another one. I guess ill hold off til we get more news.

I'm not a fan of this. If they can't do it at the same price I don't like it. To get a ps4k, with a psvr, you are looking at 1300 CDN for it... I just won't do that. I could be my wife would murder me.

Honestly, so long as this move doesn't render OG PS4's useless when attempting to play new games, then I'm fine with this move.

But if this becomes another new 3DS, then it will be bad news bears for Sony.

With the PS3 they were behind in sales and 3rd party devs were having trouble with the cell and they couldn't afford to upgrade or change things so they came up with the "10 year lifespan plan" to assure people that if they buy the system it'll last them a long time and they don't have to worry about their PS3 not being worth it.

10 year lifespan came from well before the PS3's launch.

So, the Nintendo NX was THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS close to being best console hardware on the market?

And then Sony dropped some preemptive strike bombs and ruined everything, sure to be followed up by Microsoft.

It looks like it's finally happening - consoles have joined the "one-upsmanship" arms race that Smartphones and PC GPU & CPU manufacturers have been engaged in for the past several years.

Longengevitty be damned! We need to get the latest/greatest every 3 years (or less?) or we're llLLLLLLOSERS!

/cry

Yeah, seeing all the NX posts is weird. This news would also confirm NX has already lost.

Though considering they're not decided on the CPU yet, it can't be ready for fall can it? has to be next year? Which again begs the question, why not just wait another year and go PS5 right away?

Man this is weird news.

Very weird. I was expecting a 64GB, 10 Teraflop powered, PS5 in 2019. This is kinda disappointing.

I am buying Uncharted, playing it and then sell the console plus GTA and TLoU and buying 970. I hope news arent out loudly until then.

That is talking about ALREADY RELEASED titles. Think about it like this: look at the graphics and performance devs were able to squeeze out of the PS360 when it was their primary focus; now compare that to the shitty cross-gen doe ports we got when the PS4/XB1 were released.

That is the situation everyone is worried about, and there is pretty much no reason to think this would be any different based on the state that many games are CURRENTLY released in with only 3 platforms.
I read it as future titles made for PS4K would be playable on PS4, but would not take advantage of the upgraded hardware. The PS4K isn't going to have 40 million units sold at launch, so why worry about developers putting most of their resources there when the PS4 user base is so large?

Based on the reactions at the beginning of this gen, I imagine there's going to be a lot of 4K owners over the next couple of years saying, "another game held back by OG PS4".

One of the big criticisms of Sony is they do things half assed. If this is VR related, then maybe it is a good thing? I wouldn't want a $400 headset tethered just to the OG ps4.
If it was limited to VR games I'd be positive on it, but if its going to split the non-VR community and act as a defacto price increase to get games running as advertised or even running well that's a different matter.

I see the PS4K as zero sum against the current PS4.

Well Sony and MS, thanks for stsrtin the console industry implodement. All I can say is good luck with the new sales once consumers leave the console industry. Seems like Nintendo might have to raise the industry again from the grave. Greedy Sony is the worse Sony.

Nintendo is going to save people by abandoning the console that isn't even 3 and a half years old yet. It was such a disaster Nintendo had to kill it off early and now folks are jumping at the chance to throw money at them? Wheres the Wii U upgrade program to NX for all the folks who got burned buying it?

My personal guess (and this is a guess) would be that they heard from developers that Microsoft was doing this, decided they had to do this to not be behind on hardware quality for three years, and then decided on the specific 4K angle because it fit really well with their 4K television push this Fall even if it makes zero sense from a game perspective.

The PS4k name is also too marketable to pass up.

Not to just bounce on the train or anything but man. This divides their audience up drastically. Crazy.
The thing is that it was never really an issue until Hyrule Warriors Legends came out.
I fear more developers will take it as an example of how to make new games, which I do not really want happening.
PS4K in 2016, PS5 in 2020, PS5S in 2024. A bleak future...

This really fucking sucks. I guess Sony figured "They spend $1000 upgrading their phones every year. Why not their consoles?"

The return of Arrogant Sony.

MS is doing this too. They probably both figured that since they released underpowered boxes that they could upgrade them at some point and get people to pay twice while extending the gen.
