PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Xbone.5 may be even more powerful. If not then Bone will get super shit ports as the allure of PS4K power tempts devs.

You know, I was also surprised the whole iterative console thing didn't turn out to be just an unsubstantiated rumour.
But if you think about it, it's a really logical next step with console hardware returning to profitability. (Rather than a loss-leader model)

You guys are being really sour about this. PC gaming revolves around upgrades, and Apple and Nintendo have both been doing this as well. One of the major problems with console gaming is how quickly consoles fall behind PCs, and this generation in particular has been underpowered from the getgo.
PC upgrades do allow you to upgrade a single component though (generally the GPU). It seems a bit more efficient than switching out the entire box.

Are people seriously thinking of converting over from PlayStation gaming altogether? I don't know if I could skip out on Bloodborne, Uncharted, and God of War.

Yeah, why not? You act like a lot of PC exclusives don't exist. Lots of people only went with consoles due to how simple everything is. Having to upgrade just so your games don't run like shit(look at N3DS before replying) is not a good look. Better off getting a PC with much more functionality.

That's because you were competing with long ass generational consoles that were like 7 years old behind. Now that incremental updates on consoles will occur do you really think that you'll be able to match them to get ultra settings that cheaply again?

Well if you put it that way...it makes sense to get a 399$ box every 2 years.

Let's see how much powerful this PS4K really is.

Be nice if they sold console only. Give me a SKU without the cables, controller, and what not. Drop the price from $500 to $450.

Not sure I can justify buying the PS4K and PSVR around the same time though. That's a tough sell for them $900 worth of new platforms in a short window.

Third party support will be watered down games again, shame.

Freaking bumming me out. This is bullshit. I just bought my PS4 a while back. I had little issues with higher frame rate on the new PS4, but it seems pretty clear that I am going to get very shitty version of these games.

"Significant cutbacks" means compared to the PS4K though, not compared to now. There's not really any reason to think that the games you play on your standard PS4 will suddenly get worse than they'd be if the PS4K didn't exist, just like the older format cross-generation games aren't worse than their non-cross-generation counterparts.

I guess people are missing the point that in order for people to truly enjoy 4k (considering it will probably be able to play 4k movies) you will also have to buy a new TV screen. If one thing is stagnating in this market it is the television department. I can see where Sony is coming from considering their Blu Ray choice in the PS3 made them win over HD DVD but this kind of change, that soon in the market after only 3 years for the PS4, will seriously destroy their own profitable industry.

God dammit... Guess I will upgrade when this comes out, hopefully it will come out next year

I'm betting on next year because of the supposed launch titles, and because it gives PSVR some breathing room at retail. Not many would be willing to drop around $1000 on both of these at once, but if you separate them by 6 months or so its an easier pill to swallow. Not to mention the issues of supporting two platform launches simultaneously.

It would have to as 4K TV is just getting started. Most homes don't have it. It will have to work, as PS3 and 360 still worked on 480i TVS before them.

They did work on them but not all games did. And by that I mean there were pleeeeeeeeeenty of games that had issues with the text and UI elements making them almost unplayable.

Which I can see happening here with the 4K games, just performance rather than readability.

If you can pay for a btter console that eliminates those barriers why would you be upset?

Generally the way it works is the most effort is spent on the lead platform, if that changes the average quality is likely to go down, if not the new machine isn't going to be put through its pacing. Generally such platforms like phones and PC live with a large margin of under-utilization. Not everyone likes the idea.

I'm going to assume Sony haven't finalized the launch plans and as such, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they're not going to make a number of horrific marketing miscalculations that would, without a doubt, take them back to being the anti-consumer company.

I have one question though. Is PS4K the final name?

Bingo.

Something's just not adding up. They've been in this business for over 20 years now so they know that whatever they talk about (behind closed doors) at GDC has the potential of leaking and causing a negative effect on product sales. More importantly, they remember (quite vividly) what happened the last time they had a $499.99 console in rotation.

I'm 100% confident in the OP -- when there's this much smoke there has to be a fire somewhere. However, something (on Sony's side) smells extremely fishy. Not bad fishy (e.g. "WHAT is that smell?!?) but good fishy (e.g. WHAT is that smell!). After their incredible turn-around with the PlayStation brand, they would never in a billion years take on such a massive risk without the potential of a massive reward. They nailed the PS4 price + features almost three years ago, nailed the PSVR price + features less than 3 weeks ago, but are seemingly going to drop the ball (and then some) with their new PS4 in less than 3 months? There has to be something else with this new console that makes it all worth it.

Well the rumored upgrade would put the gpu above a 970, which is VR benchmark.

Let's be real: as soon as there are two hardware targets, the older model is going to be increasingly sidelined. Major publishers will not allow significant time to be spent optimising for the older platform when they will simply use the PS4K version for all their marketing materials.

What's worse is knowing that a large amount of system resources are simply going to be left idle by publishers who do not patch their previous titles to take advantage of what looks like a significant power increase. At least when I upgrade a PC GPU, my games will take advantage of the additional power. I have no faith that 3rd party publishers will make a serious effort to upgrade their back catalogue in full, and many will stick to their usual tactic of pushing their customers to their next annualised release.

If this is MS and Sony's business model going forward then I'm increasingly wary of buying either of their hardware. I haven't purchased either of their hardware this gen, and they keep giving me great reasons to just stick to PC.

Now go enjoy the $792.00 Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge you just got, which replaced the S6 you bought last year.

.

Yes because everyone does this. God lord the comparison between smartphones and consoles, and taking like everyone upgrade phone every year will never stop, right?

Are people seriously thinking of converting over from PlayStation gaming altogether? I don't know if I could skip out on Bloodborne, Uncharted, and God of War.

When the PS4 and Xbone were announced that E3, I doubled down on PC since I saw that eventually those worlds would collide anyway. And here we are. I think if we all look back, the writing's been on the wall that the console market was going to head this way.

I only bought a PS4 for Bloodborne and I have no regrets for that game alone. I will have regrets when I see Bloodborne 2 and/or Demon's Souls 2 on PS4k however. Or maybe not regrets, but more of the "now I have to buy an upgraded console I barely use as it is?" sort of feeling.

Based on the reactions at the beginning of this gen, I imagine there's going to be a lot of 4K owners over the next couple of years saying, "another game held back by OG PS4".
Yep

Will devs even be taking full advantage of it if they need to also plan for PS4 specs?

Rough situation

New games - "It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance. "

I don't want Bloodborne 2 to run at 1080p / 15fps on my existing PS4, basically.

I don't read it that way. The considerable sacrifices to performance will be relative to the PS4K, not to the PS4 we currently have.

Good. Update the console every 3 years and make a trade in program for the old versions. Ideal number would be 50% off but i'll take 30%

In all seriousness. How many devs do people think are gonna go back and release patches on their games to up performance for the PS4K?

How many games will be made exclusively for the PS4K and in turn run/look like shit for regular PS4??

Depends on how easy it is to use the extra power. I would assume it's very easy, which could mean that the most popular multiplayer games at the very least gets a patch. Most indie developers keep updating their games for a long time, so a lot of those might see benefits as well.

If they make a game with PS4K in mind, then yeah, it will either look or run like complete shit on PS4. If most devs aim to make their games work on PS4 and then use the extra power for a resolution bump and/or more stable fps then that would be nice.

My personal guess (and this is a guess) would be that they heard from developers that Microsoft was doing this, decided they had to do this to not be behind on hardware quality for three years, and then decided on the specific 4K angle because it fit really well with their 4K television push this Fall even if it makes zero sense from a game perspective.

They didn't even need to hear it from developers. I have no doubt that AMD shopped this new SOC to both MS and Sony. Why wouldn't they? They are the ones most incentivised to make this happen. It feels like they offered both a sweetheart deal.

This sucks for people who got their PS4 this year or last year, but honestly, this fall it's been three years since the PS4 launched.

You could have said the same to people who bought a PS3 or 360 in 2013 when the new consoles were right around the corner.

I mean it was clear that this gen wouldnt stay on the same Hardware for 6+ years

So, if the PS4K is a 3.6 TFlops system, that would make it around a GTX-770 tier GPU, would it not?

GTX 970 perhaps?

I'd still buy one for UHD playback as l love BluRay but man i'm felling disappointed with 2xGPU perf.

Guess that will allow them to downsize the console if the chips are indeed much smaller.

Now isn't the greatest place when it comes to performance and stability and load times and general quality of games at release. I don't see that improving for current gen console owners by releasing more powerful hardware.
