PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Boooooooooooooooooyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeee!

My body is ready.

No upgrade program and I'll just trade in my Destiny PS4 and drop $100 down at the same damn time. I hope they put that new CPU in there.
It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.
So will there be no way at this point for devs to get the best out of both the PS4 and the PS4K?

why? Because he used a couple of gifs?

He was also annoying. I've had him on ignore for months and yet it didn't do any good with people constantly quoting his popgaf bullshit. There's a reason there's a gaming side and a community side. Plus this is a meltdown thread and all he was doing was throwing gasoline everywhere.

If all PS4K games are able to maintain a stable 60fps then I'm all for this. If not, I'll just stick with my current PS4.

Might want to sit down for that one.

They´re gonna sell the PS4 and PS4K at the same time. At least for 1, probably 2 years, until the PS4K price comes down. Then the PS4K will be the only one until the PS5 comes out. Games still work on both PS4s. The PS4 version will look and play as it would have without the 4K anyway. The PS4K version will look better/run better, still the same game.

Microsoft will do the same if we look at Spencer´s comments.

Nintendo will most likely do the same, if we look at Iwata´s comments about the NX being more like a platform and not just a console and handheld. With it being more like the ios/android environment. Also they´re not going to be the only ones doing regular 5 year gens when their other two competitors (blabla, not competitors, bubble etc.) are doing it.

I don´t see a downside. The games that you´re playing are being developed and then downgraded to your PS4 right now anyway. The assests are higher resolution in development than what you´re seeing in the end. They´re probably higher quality than what you´re gonna get on the 4K too. Obviously the case for multi platform games that are also on PC.

I hope this is the case.

Do you guys think we will se a PS4K exclusive version of Uncharted 4 with better graphics compared to the last gen PS4?

I fucking hope not.
Tbh the more I think about it the more terrible this idea seems.
Dividing the fanbase this early is a terrible idea

I really have zero issues with any of this.

Bring on the 60fps patches to every single exclusive, Sony. Let's start with Ratchet & Clank :)

I'm not opposed to the concept of iterative consoles and I actually supported the way I heard people speculate about Nintendo's potential approach. So from that perspective I agree with this post.

But man, the price is such a dealbreaker. Paying $500 for the same console is just too much and not something I can afford to justify. If it was cheaper or there was an upgrade plan, that'd be cool. But.... MAN, a whole new purchase, I can't do that.

Fuck this.
Aiming to join the PC gaming crowd in the second half of the year.

I've no interest in a console market where my console will be outdated by a new model after 2-3 years.
Specially when hearing about games made for the new model that are still "playable on the older one with much worse performance". Sounds like original 3ds versions of hyrule warriors in the making.

2 years waiting for this console to finally get going and when it does it's now soon to be replaced.

Part of me wonders if this is Sony pushing 4K blu-ray in the way they pushed DVD with the PS2 and regular blu-ray with the PS3 as well, the PS4 was the first Sony console since the PS1 that wasn't partly designed to push a new optical video medium.

different era. lots of people don't even buy disks anymore and strictly stream their video content and the jump from 1080 > 4k is diminishing returns compared to SD > HD. It would be a strange for them to try and push that adoption imo.

Shut up everyone.
It was also made very clear that current games would not be getting any type of performance upgrades by being played on the system and any benefits to older games would come via patch per game and per developer. When asked if this was going to happen the response was "Its a possibility but doubtful with the exception of a handful of games."

Does that mean that there's a possibility of playing Bloodborne at 60 fps through a patch ?

So I wanted to start off by saying, I think Sony has done a pretty great job with the range of games available for PS4. They are diverse, interesting, and compelling. From Bloodborne to The Order: 1886, the first party lineup reflects a large spectrum of genres and player preferences.

With that being said, lets talk about PS4. From a marketing standpoint, it's the star of the show. It's a great console. When we look at the way it's portrayed in promotional media, leaks, and art in advertisements we know a few things about it..

It's Fast.
It's Silly.
It kind of sounds like an airplane sometimes.
It's a good console.

It's body seems to be comprised of about 95% matte finish.

Almost all of it's art reflects this. It's got cool skins:

It's got fun poses:

Its's got amazing intro animations:

All of this reinforces the great character you've built around the PS4.

Then out of seemingly no where we have this iteration:

WHAT? What about this console has anything to do with the brand you're building at Sony? It's not fun, its not silly, it has nothing to do with being a Halo killer. It just reduces PS4 to another bland gaming console.

We aren't looking at a PS Vita here, this isn't a console who is in part defined by proprietary memory cards. This console says to the player base, oh we've got all these cool diverse games, but at any moment we are willing to reduce them to 30 FPS/720p to help boost our investment game.

Getting 4k into an existing console generation isn't a small task, it has to go through an implementer, a team lead, a 4k director, and a creative 4k director. This is a team effort. And I believe the team is responsible for upholding the great example Sony can set to the rest of the industry for creating strong gaming consoles.

I have a young daughter that everyday when I wake up wants to watch the PS4 startup intro again. She knows who Ellie is, and as she grows up, she can grow up alongside these videogames.

What I'm asking is that as you continue to add to the PS4 line up and investment elements, you double down on your commitment to create strong gaming consoles that aren't replaced with improved iterations. You've been doing a good job so far, but shipping with a second console like this undermines so much of the good you've already done.

In all seriousness, this sounds like a great way to avoid super long console generations so I'll be buying one day 1.

Is this the first official meltdown?

Weird it came from somebody in support of the console.

The more interesting question for me out of this is how is MS keeping their box so quite? NOTHING has leaked out about that thing, other than that it apparently exists. Maybe they aren't as far along as Sony? Maybe Sony is trying to preemptively beat them?

NeoGaf will need new servers soon or we won't be able to serve each other crows gallore in June. Let's start a benefit campaign, pls.

Because then it would not likely play PS4 games and piss off even more people. Making it an upgraded console, they will likely make all PS4/PS4k cross-compatible (with graphics differencesand performance separating them).

Edit: Didn't realize this was already at 45 pages.

I don't think BC will ever disappear going forward. X86 is going to make sure it's easier.

This more or less confirms PSVR is going to be a very sub par experience on the current spec PS4. $399 for the headset plus $399 for the PS4K to run it to its potential and we have a VR device just as expensive as PC VR
Conveniently forgetting the cost of the PC there buddy. No it's not.

How is this even Remotely like DRM? Sony isn't coming into your home and setting your original PS4 on fire. This is Sony taking a risk and releasing an iterative machine in an era where people are comfortable speding 700 dollars on GPUs alone (that sell out in minutes and in the millions of units).

I get personal attachment to hardware, but I'm not going to wax lyrical that a peice of plastic should receive all the attention of a developer house even if the company has the resources and ambition to do otherwise.

Because the reality is that this goes directly against part of why many people buy consoles in the first place. It's knowing that for five or so years you'll have a new platform and won't need to update for a while. Heck, right now the PS4 is selling more than it did last year in the same time period. Yet in a few months the people that bought those PS4's may learn that there's going to be an even better version of the console. Something that there's way no reason to even consider being a possibility before then. How do you think those people are going to feel? Do you think they're going to want to hear about an upgraded console when they just made a $350 investment?

And I simply compared the anger to that of which you saw with the DRM. When you've got people constantly saying "Fuck Sony if this is true", then yes, it's very much like the DRM debacle. Like I said, if Sony has been listening, then now has never been a better time to listen. There's no going back once this thing is announced. Much like with DRM. MS has never been able to shake that reputation since. And Sony won't be able to shake this.

Man this generation is gonna be a pain if you are a developer.

X1 which is the weakest. Then you have a PS4, slightly more powerful. Then a PS4k which is way more powerful. Then the NX which could be any fucking thing. And MS might do a Xbox 1.5 which could be anything as well.

Soooo much extra work for basically fuck all. And then you will have people bitching cause the console they just bought is showing shitty graphics compared to whats they can get soon.

And dont forget the million different power levels of PC they might have to do....

oh wait, they already do that for PC games. No different than most developers of PC games do for every game already.

Does it make the most powerful gaming PC set up look obsolete or nor even close?

"I'm expecting a modified 14nm 7970 based APU instead of the modified 7870 APU in the current PS4"
It'd be nowhere near a good PC setup. The 7970 is a pretty old card. A nice little upgrade for a PS4 though.

Do you guys think we will se a PS4K exclusive version of Uncharted 4 with better graphics compared to the last gen PS4?

Like how we got a PS4 version of Last of Us.

It's called Uncharted : The Movie.

I do think a few first parties might patch in some upgrades but doubt there will be a massive move on publishers or devs parts on old games.

So... If u don't want to pay for an iterative console... Then don't and continue to play on your vanilla ps4.

I don't understand how this is at all a bad thing unless it gets exclusive games, or game performance suffers badly on the vanilla. All the info we have says no exclusives and one throw away line about significant performance differences

I don't understand how people can not expect that to happen. Even ignoring what someone might or might not have heard, look at games today. Games on current gen consoles run badly, even when they only have to make the games for that one console! Now they get given a box with more power you really think they will decide "nah, it's time we really set boundaries for ourselves and focussed on making games that perform well"? No, they will make even shinier and prettier games that run bad on the 4K and run worse on the PS4.

I'm so, so, so done.

This is a huge slap in the face. I literally got my PS4 less than a year ago (the Bloodborne bundle in june) and really enjoyed like 2 games on it.

It was ok with the DSi and new 3DS, because handhelds tend to wear down a lot faster (especially the buttons) and are far cheaper than the huge 400 bucks investment you have with consoles.

Just fuck you, Sony.

You gotta love when somewhat valid arguments are brought up, they're shat on into oblivion, because these things, they take time, but whenever someone brings up the gen is too young for a Dreamcastation upgrade, now all of a sudden the gen is only 3 years old.

So people realize that PSVR just got bumped to a potential $1000 investment right?

Still not bad when you include PCs with the competitors headsets, but PSVR pricing just doubled pretty much.

And don't expect vanilla PS4 to run much. There were questions there orginallybthatbwere never answered.

PS4K is the answer.

You must be ignoring the PC Space where a 290X can easily run modern AAA games at 4K around 30 FPS. IF this is truly a 2X leap over PS4 with sacrifices and developer focused hardware coding- it can do 4K 30 FPS wit hease .
Except a 290x is roughly 5.6TFLOPS, a GPU twice the PS4's will be around the 3.6TFLOPS.

In the world where the PS4K does not exist:

Games are released for OG PS4, but they're highly downgraded versions of PC games, or if they're exclusives they're downgraded from the original assets / vision in order to optimise the game and get it to run on weak hardware with a poor CPU.

In the world where the PS4K exists:

Games are released for OG PS4, but they're highly downgraded versions of PC games, or if they're exclusives they're downgraded from the original assets / vision in order to optimise the game and get it to run on weak hardware with a poor CPU, and also you also have a '4k version' for the PS4k that gets closer to that original spec / PC version.

...so what's the problem here? If you're just a PS4 owner nothing has really changed for you. You're getting the same games.

If all PS4K games are able to maintain a stable 60fps then I'm all for this. If not, I'll just stick with my current PS4.

You know they'll just push resolution and not frame rate. That's the most irritating part about this, I have no desire or need for a 4K TV for comfy couch gaming. I'd rather the bump in power be used to make games run better with less loading times, more objects on screen, longer draw distance, etc.
