Games already run like crap on the PS4 at the moment and need patches to run decent after release. What will happen when the PS4K is out and the developers have to split up Optimization Development Time between both versions? The PS4K might get priority and we'll have to wait even longer to get patches to fix the game after releasedate.

PS4 sales are really good right now @350$. People are forking out money and that is all Sony needs to see. There is demand for new shit so they are gonna give it to you. Apple does the same with phones. Why wait to hit some 100m ceiling when you can instead continue releasing new hardware and ride the $ wave right now.

Yeeeeah not interested in dropping $400 for new hardware every 3 years. That's about what I spend on my PC (alternating upgrading between CPU+mobo and GPU) and its hardware runs circles around either console.

This move, if true, pushes me away from consoles just a little bit more. I see no reason to drop that kind of cash that often and still be in the console space. It's a little silly, tbh.

Even if Sony doesn't do a trade in, I am sure Gamestop will. I would trade in my current PS4 and pay a couple hundred bucks for a PS4k. In two seconds. I can understand how some might not be happy with this but I would LOVE to have a console that plays 4k movies, has twice the GPU and runs games at 1080p/60.

No. 2x PS4 is roughly as powerful as a GTX680. I mean, it'll do a better job, sure, but better than shit (regarding 4k performance) is not saying much.

If this is true, Wii U lasted longer than PS4 and it has been a colossal failure.... Interesting developments, indeed.

My sentiments exactly. I'd rather pay less to upgrade my PC every few years than having to buy "a PS4" again to get better performance. I don't have a PC yet but I will get one if this is true.

This is a necessary thing if you want the medium to move forward. And if you're inclined, newer games will still work on the older consoles, with less performance/graphical fidelity. It's not splitting up anything.

The problem here is that there are three elements to performance of the game: "ambition fulfilment" (i.e. how well does it look), "hardware", and "manhours", and they "follow" the equation of Fa(a) = x1 (x2 + Fh(h)) * (x3 + Fm(m)), where Fa, Fh and Fm are nondecreasing functions.

So when devs use rise of h to decrease m instead of rising a, especially since now they have de facto two hardware setups to support which may end up have different development needs, you get following scenario:

Games are released on PS4k, but they're heavily degraded versions of PC games. They are also released on OPS4, but they're even more heavily degraded versions of that.

I really hope developers aren't allowed to access this extra power. Keep all consoles the same and keep everything standardized. We don't need another n3DS fiasco but with a even more expensive console device. $500 is a huge difference then a new $200 handheld.

If Sony is set on upgrading the PS4, at least offer and allow current PS4 owners to have their current consoles upgraded at any Sony store with a small fee.

I would really hope Sony, and not Gamestop, does a trade in. I want a real upgrade path, not GS's pennies on the dollar approach.

It really is up to developers to make our time more miserable. Can't say if Sony will mandate a minimal quality for old PS4s.

I'm worried that if it sells well developers will start to focus on the new PS4 more than the old one and we'll start getting exclusive PS4K games or terrible unoptimized experiences likw hyrule warriors 3DS

Basically I thought I would be able to experience the whole PS4 library but that may not be true after this

The same people that buy the 4.5 will buy the 5 and the 5.5. It's the people that won't buy the 4.5 that it will affect though. They'll be hesitant to buy the 5 any time after the first year or 18 months if it's going to mean they'd get a more powerful one by waiting a bit longer.

At that point I'm not upgrading my PS4 until it dies or I can't play an exclusive on it. Give me that 20FPS goodness for the game per year I'll use on it. The rest I'm on PC.
 
I think that a lot of the reactions in this thread are very justified.

I got my ps4 in January and I am going to purchase this as soon as a white one comes out. To me it's how this generation should have begun. The PlayStation has always pushed boundaries in each console:

PlayStation: CD drive
PlayStation 2: DVD
PlayStation 3: Bluray

PlayStation 4 is a powerful console but didn't have ultra HD Bluray player at launch. It should have had it to push the 4K revolution but it may not have been feasible at the time.

They clearly have an uphill struggle to sell this console to the general public. Many will wonder what is the point or may be confused (like the New3DS or WiiU) between the two opting for the cheaper one.

No one is saying you need to upgrade but of course it will feel like your being short changed when you see games running so well on a 4K compared to the standard 4.

It's like Sony doesn't offer developers tools and devkits with the ability to analyze performance, how different components (GPU/CPU) are taxed on a per frame basis, or legnthy chains that helps them determine whats best for each machine.
 
Kind of makes me just want to buy a new GPU and a Steam link and make that my primary method of gaming. I have no real problem with the approach Sony/MS are taking. I'd probably still end up buying a Playstation console again in the future, just most likely second hand.
 
If this means I have a option for future PS4 games to be 60fps then all good for me, its nice being a Gen or so behind now with Consoles, play on PC then reap the benfits of the old generation when a new one starts coming out. Won't get a PS4 for another year or two im certainly interested in seeing how this all goes down.

or, games for the PS4 arent optimized as well anymore and dev focuses on the PS4K and PC. Or games are not optimized for the PS4K with necessity to focus on optimizing more and more skus.

Oh really? So developers won't consider one more versions of settings on a closed platform for their game? As opposed to say, the hundreds of different permutations for the same game running on a PC? Logical. Who needs 40 millions potential customers.

I won't get it right away. They would have to put out a killer game I can't refuse. Like Bloodborne 2.... in 4k... oh lawd. Is this a this year thing? Wouldn't they already have to be producing them?
