PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Not true.

Never trust numbers from Nvidia.

If it's about 2x as powerful in terms of flops it's probably got something like An R9 380 or 380X in there. I guess it might still be 28nm.
Like another poster said, it's also kinda weird there's talk of an upgraded platform when Uncharted 4 isn't even out just yet and there's no new God of War, Gran Turismo, and others. Just a deluge of mostly remasters and AAA games from 3rd parties.

Man. Can't wait for the official announcement and details. Most people seem to be fine with the idea of forward and backward compatible consoles. But there isn't nearly as much agreement with the natural consequence of such capability. If consoles are taking the route of forward and backward compatibility a la PC, then there's no reason to arbitrarily drag generations on for 5 or more years at a time. Just like PC gaming is a constantly moving target, so will be console gaming to a lesser extent. People can choose to upgrade every iteration or just on ticks or tocks a la Apple's S and non-S releases.
Exactly. Take advantage as technology allows. 14nm is out this year, so why not make a console. If they don't someone else will.

I don´t really get the concern about "cross-gen" between the PS4 & PS4K.

It´s GPU is about twice as powerful. That´s gonna get you higher settings, better shadows, a bit more draw distance etc or a mixture of those things.

This isn´t like the PS3/PS4 situation at all. That was a powergap by the factor of 10 or something like that were if you wanted the game to run on both, it was either an upgraded version of the PS3 game (which would be the higher settings example in the beginning of the post) or a PS4 game and an almost different PS3 game, because of the huge power gap simply not being able to run the "same" game. Which even if devs focused on the 4K version, it would be quite simple to run the game on the regular PS4. PCs, been doing it for decades. And this are exactly 2 different skus. Not a million.

You´re gonna get PS4 games with better settings here. They´re not gonna abandon the PS4 for the 4K. There are what, 40 million? of those out there. It will be just fine.

Thread is moving pretty fast so I'll just quote this, because this is probably what's going to happen.

hope consoles start releasing every three years, tired of old ass console tech holding back devs.

As mush as I agree with you on this, the average consumer won't see eye to eye with us on this possible path.

OP, I apologize if you've already answered this:

Is this aimed at a Fall 2016 launch? Or 2017?

Edit - Where are folks getting Q1 2017?

From the OP, here's his quote:

Yes I do care about my job and I generally do the firing =) . To clear up a few things though he did not make it sound like all games would be native 4k just that they would be scaled to 4k and we do have a tentative placeholder date for late Q1 next year.

If it's gonna be late Q1 2017 at the earliest, do we really expect it to be announced at E3? Surely that could lower PS4 sales throughout the rest of the year? Unless they announce a price drop of the standard PS4 alongside it I would think that they'd wait til after Christmas. PSVR should be their focus for this year, PS4K next year.

I'm honestly not expecting an announcement until PSX if it's launching in 2017.

It has to come earlier now due to the info being leaked about the possibility of a new Sony console. Waiting a year after the first bits of info trickle out this early into the hardware generation could have some pretty negative consequences.

PSX would make more sense if they release in 2017, but they'll almost have to talk about it now at E3.

Yeah, but as a ps4.0 owner who has PSVR preordered, this has me hugely concerned.

Why be concerned? PSVR will work just as well as it has been shown to work for the past 2 years with all its various games. Going by everyones reactions, that'll be a pretty good experience. Those who get PSVR will have an even better experience.

I own a launch day PS4 and bought a second for my bedroom in November. I'll be getting PSVR too. This new product doesn't bother me at all because I know my hardware will be just as good as what I expected it to be when I bought it, and I'll be able to enjoy the experiences I bought it for. I'll be tempted to buy the PS4K, but whether I do so or not will depend on how much of an improvement it will be for me and my 1080p TVs and future PSVR.

Wow, busy day in terms of news. :o

I'm still shocked at people thinking PS4 users will be pissed off. I love the news about the new hardware even though I won't buy one as of yet, and I own a launch PS4 from 2013.

I don't own a 4K TV, neither have the $400,00 to spend on a PS4 again, so I will be playing on the 'inferior' machine, and i'm not bothered at all.

Some people take a punch to the face with a smile others will pull out a knife.
People are different, you know. I went through nearly all the pages of this thread and I'm counting many many Gaffers who feel bad about this. They have their personal reason while you have yours.

Looks like Sony is adopting an Apple model when it comes to gaming consoles. Yeah when a new iphone launches people dont stop using their older iphones simply because it can still pretty effectively function a lot of stuff.

But this is videogames that we are talking about, such an upgrade suddenly opens up options to a lot of possibilities. Does a developer completely scrap current gen and do everything on 4K or do it on both. I'd assume the former would require more time and money.

With development costs already hitting the roof and more money being made on mobile gaming devices, I'd reckon a lot of big publishers are soon going to lower the number of AAA releases

I still dont understand this, Sony is basically offering a new PS and a VR set which cost around the same amount, not to mention the other investment to make this function as per its intention

What if people never make the transition to a PS 4.5 in a year or so. How long will they be able to sustain without enough people transitioning mid generation.

Given how the company is doing overall (I know this has been one of their better years) but this seems like massive risk. They might just sink into oblivion by the time they actually manage to get this thing on its feet.

I may be a minority but I am sitting on the fence on both the VR proposition and this 4K thing right now.

I know this stings for a lot of people especially those who can't afford new gaming systems and upgrades, and those who are simply a believer in the old guard where console generations last 7-10 years. To those of you who feel this is a slap in the face I feel for you all. But hey change isn't always bad.

I am in neither camp so TAKE MY MONEY (AGAIN), SONY. I needed a 4K blu-ray player anyway.

Edit: This is no different than developers creating games for PCs of various performance tiers. Scale up to 11 for high end and scale back to 3 for low end.

This thread is moving too fast, but I'd just like to note that it really doesn't make any sense to take an estimate based on a AMD GPU architecture, use that estimate to multiply the FLOPs of an AMD GPU, and then compare that directly to an NV GPU.

It makes much more sense to compare it to AMD, which would put it at about Radeon 280X level.

You probably are right, PS4(1.8TFLOPs) is rivaling with a 750Ti(1.3TFLOPs).

So a PS4 twice as powerful may be closer to a 960 than a 970.

Quoting so that people might (hopefully) read it.

Well, I mean, they already have with the DSi, the N3DS, the SuperFX chips for SNES, and the RAM expansion pack for N64.

If it's popular I don't see why they wouldn't use it with their modern consoles as well, but you can never be certain with Nintendo.

Oh lol I completely forgot about those, but yeah you're right, with Nintendo's modern consoles, you're never certain.

I would be willing to bet Quantic Dream is one of those developers that already has a devkit for Detroit: Become Human

Some of the reactions have been quite childish (imo).

This thread... Jesus people, get your shit together.

Its an upgraded PS4, it will make future PS4 games look prettier and run smoother. If you don't want it, stick with the current model. No one is putting a gun to your head.

They haven't even announced the thing yet.

Unfortunately, if you stick to the current model, odds are the games will run worse than if this PS4k didn't exist at all.

This is what happens on PC, iOS, and Android when newer models make their way out.

I was on board at first with the incremental hardware upgrades, but this just doesn't make sense to me.

It seems ripe to divide the userbase, and that's always the wrong answer.

Except it's not. OG PS4 will be priced down quicker and positioned as the mass market, low entry point option, while the - box will cater to enthusiasts in the console space. This will ruffle very few panties in the grand scheme of things.

It's not a risky move?

Of course it is.

I don't think people have any idea how market realities will embrace these kinds of products, despite how we've seen these things change.

A newer, higher end ps4 lowering the cost of entry for the base model will only create new access for different consumers. This community is very niche and insular and very reactionary to things, tends to hype itself both negatively and positively.

If all this info is true, it means we'll have a new paradigm for consoles, and we'll babe to see how it affects then going forward, but it's also the first time we'd have the exact same architecture being shared between these models for mass development.

I'd rather wait and let Sony demonstrate what they're going to do and how they'll pull it off, and what that will mean going forward.

Instead of, you know, losing my Damn mind and exploding with preposterous statements.

So dont throw my ps4 out the window yet... gotcha

I hope this doesn't continue to be a trend. The cross gen stuff was bad enough.

I'd be ok-ish with buying a PS5 next year sometime, but I really don't like this halfway, upgrade/kinda new console thing.
