PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

It's almost as if they could both have drastic effects on the console industry as a whole. Look, I know you really like Sony, but perhaps some people view this as potentially dangerous.

It's not really all that shocking.

What? You are comparing DRM, a process where you limit the end users ability to share, play freely, or sell the product to an OPTIONAL HARDWARE upgrade. I understand the fear people have that this might somehow the performance of future titles on a legacy platform, but this is not apples to apples.

Ridiculous. I can't understand why anyone would be please with Microsoft sticking to the already inferior platform.

I don't understand anyone upset about this news. Its very clear how poor consoles are performing this gen. This is the shot in the arm they need.
You are delusional if you don't understand why this news is upsetting to some.

And wtf at consoles performing poorly this gen? They are out pacing their last gen counterparts launch aligned and isn't the PS4 currently pacing with the PS2 or something? The console market doesn't need a "shot in the arm", and even if it did I would not classify this as such.

What is this is all saying that if you want to play God of War 4 comma classic PS4 will run at 1080p 30 frames per second. PS4 4K will run it 4k 30 fps or 1080p 60 fps.

This reminds me of the way AMC "split" the last seasons of Breaking Bad and Mad Men. Yo, AMC, if it's seperated by a year it's a new season. An abbreviated season, but a different season none the less.

This seems like a much bigger advancement than, say, the DSi or N3DS. But I wonder if it will still have the same result, where there's very little software to take advantage of the features due to the larger majority of the install base having the older hardware.

There was a story that an iTunes user bought Breaking Bad season 5 while the first half was airing, and when the second half aired, Apple was going to charge him for it since the season was split. It was interesting. Sorry, off topic ;)

I buy a console to last me around 5 yrs before getting a new one. I don't buy a console that gets upgrade every 2-3 years. What happens in say another 2 years Sony want another upgrade? What happens to the original PS4 owners then?

The reason I may cancel my PSVR is lack of funds to buy both btw.

Your.Games.Will.Still.Work.On.PS4

And also, the added benefit of console gamers not keeping PC graphics from iterating as quickly as they could.

The game doesnt have to be PS4k exclusive to hurt PS4 owners.

Right now every developer is getting as much out of the PS4 as possible, that will not be the case when this comes out, and developers will likely target 30 FPS for the PS4k, which would lead to sub 30 FPS games on PS4.

This is a disaster for everyone involved.

Bingo. The fact most people defending this can't grasp this is the most likely outcome is appalling. They are just imagining all games will be at least 1080p 60fps. They are in for a rude awakening...

Speaking of "rude awakenings", it will be fun seeing Sony trying to sell this outside of the US. Oh boy...

What do you mean they "need"? The PS4 is outpacing the PS2!

I genuinely don't know how to react to this news being all but confirmed now. I think it is insane that Sony/Developers are basically turning around and saying we've wasted our money by backing a horse they knew had a broken leg. I love my PS4 but this feels a little unfair and feels like they've given up in pushing what this console can do or apparently cannot. I can't imagine how the general consumer/people who have already bought one (considering how big the install base is) are going feel when we see how "significant" the performance difference is.

What?

Q1 2017?

After the 2016 Holiday season?

That's insanity, this news will wreck vanilla PS4 sales prospect this holiday season, unless there's a steep price-cut to go with it.

And also, the added benefit of console gamers not keeping PC graphics from iterating as quickly as they could.

Ps4k. Games. Will. Run. Like. Shit. On. Ps4.

And oh boy, now sony consoles get to be just like the PC...except you know...none of the actual advantages, all of the inconveniences and more. GET EXCITED PEOPLE ! #4THEPLAYERS

Oh fuck...then they are going to take the smartphone market as guide and release a new PlayStation every fucking year, with little incremental upgrades..I don't like this one bit!!

It was stated plainly and with no room for interpretation that there are developers that already have development kits for the PS4K and that they are making games that will directly target and take advantage of the higher specs of the PS4K. It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

This sentence is scary. It means games will be natively developed for the PS4K (GOW4 is surely one of them) and then scaled back when ported to the regular PS4 and not the opposite where games are natively created for regular PS4 (taking full advantage of it) then ported and improved on PS4K just like PS3 Remastered Games on PS4. This means regular PS4 games will clearly suffer just like the famous previous very demanding PC only games when they were ported on consoles and the sacrifice was so tremendous.

Maybe some small titles or Sony-funded titles to get people to be interested in it for more than the updated performances on future games.

As for big multiplat games, or even big 1st party games, it's a non-sense unless you want to tell 40 millions people that you don't want their money.

So, for most games an meaningful ones, maybe not until PS5.

just like there is a policy that every PSVR game has to be 60fps, there will be likely a policy that every PS4K game has to work on PS4.

They will likely announce it when they announce PS4K so people can stop imaging crazy scenarios where developers will for no reason at all decide not to support PS4, and decide to bankrupt their company since they developed for 1m users instead of for 41m for extra 1% of development cost.

Speaking as a user of high hz monitors instead of 4k ones; would significantly prefer if there was a high refresh rate option. Otherwise the product is a flop (in my eyes)

Question, can't they make it like PC where you can run the same game on different settings? For example, running God of War 4 on PS4K at "ultra settings" and when running on PS4, the game runs at "Normal Settings"?

This is what I'm expecting in the difference between PS4 and PS4K.

Third party developers might have some serious work to do. If you're looking at developing games for Classic PS4, X1, PC, and PS4K...oooof. Your console team is going to hate you. Sony might even be banking on that and hoping that they make the classic PS4/X1 versions much crappier and spend their time on the PS4K / PC versions.

In case you didn't hear from all the folks in this thread, the PS4 stops working the moment the PS4K is released. $199 paper weight.

I personally can't wait to go home and glare at my impotent ps4, cursing at it for it's complete uselessness. Then I am going to make some kind of doorstop out of it, I'm pretty sure it will fit nicely behind my front door, but it has that wobble though!!

I am expecting NX to be better because of longer R&D and more custom silicon. 4 teraflops +.

And, in Nintendo's own words, getting back to Nintendo like profits.

Its Nintendo, they will make low cost hardware and mark it up nicely like they say they will.

Nah, they do that aleady, its called the PC version with lots of options. The dev can select 3 groups of settings from teh PC version, one for Xb1, one for Ps4, one for Ps4K.

Nothing has changed.,

You should look at the bright side here... probably $199 for a PS4 in the near future. Great for those who don't have a 4K TV.

This isn't just about 4K TVs though. I don't have one nor do I want one since I don't watch television or care about ultra HD movies. This is more about the prospect that all PS4 games going forward will be tailored to the new hardware and perform just as poorly as current PS4 games (the 'targeting 30fps' bullshit etc), which means they will definitely look and likely perform even worse on the original PS4.

just like there is a policy that every PSVR game has to be 60fps, there will be likely a policy that every PS4K game has to work on PS4.

They can't enforce anything about the performance. Look at how Shadow of Mordor runs on PS4 and how it runs on PS3. Just because it releases on the platform is not enough.

I suppose this also supports PSVR becoming a iterative platform also

Faster PS4

Higher Resolution PSVR

Faster PSR

Higher Resolution PSVR

Rinse and repeat

PSVR will be more frequently upgraded even. Better/lighter lenses, displays, chips, wireless. new versions will be released in shorter cycles to improve the hardware and/or make it cheaper.

I'm pretty sure that's up to the dev to decide. Sony isn't mandating games go PS4K down, rather than PS4 up.

Before this thread I had concluded that 14nm and/or Polaris was a no go for PS4K because of cost and yields being too low for ~1 million units a month

So what process node will this 2X GPU powered console be manufactured on? It can't be 28nm realistically...is there a 20/22nm node in mass production?

Showing PSVR, announcing it's price, bundles and seeing it running on current PS4 model then to show you what console you actually need for the full experience is even the strangest move ever.

One of the dumbest things Sony has done in a while. The total cost of ownership just went up a $1000 or more for the "full" experience. How do we know that Polyphony, who can barely get a game out as it is are going to put enough resources into both PS4 versions? For all we know the OG PS4 version could look like complete shit and maybe wouldn't if they had time to dedicate to one version only.

Devs don't have infinite manpower and are not going to increase costs on their own. Their will be trade offs, how much we don't know.

I'm most likely cancelling my PSVR pre order and won't bother will any of this untill late in the gen when everything is cheaper and we have a good idea what is the best possible experience on a console.

If this is the way forward, PS4 to PS4.5 and PS5 to PS5.5, I will simply buy the .5 variants from now on. You avoid the early generation drought and get a revised, more powerful machine with a big library.

As an early adopter it's slightly annoying but isn't this just similar to the New 3DS?
I don't think you understand the implications of this iterative bussiness model. Now you will never get a big library for any machine. You will have cross gen games early on and when the next console iteration is released, then you'll get crappy ports of the PS5 games. But you'll never get those late gen highly optimized games you got with the PS3, PS2 or PS1.

Okay man. If you want just to ignore all the points people have been making for pages, go right ahead. You're either being intentionally obtuse or disingenuous

Some people view this as a big deal, because they can both have longstanding consequences. Just because you don't agree with the severity, does not make them any less concerning for those that do.

If they're really deciding between $399 and $499 w/ a beefier CPU, I hope they go for $499. Might as well go all out if you're gonna put out an updated console mid-gen. Leave the current PS4 on the market for people who just want a cheap gaming machine.

I would agree with that. I'm not sure how I feel about the ".5" console thing but if they do it then I want them to go all the way with it. As an early adopter if I'm gonna upgrade I want to really feel like I'm getting a really big leap, I don't want pay for a reasonable upgrade I want an impressive and obvious one.

Okay....
I don't know how I missed this but the OP mentions Deep Down???

Yup. Calling bullshit on this. This is a huge set up for April fool's.

How shitty do you think they'll run?

Devs will be playing with fire (and lost sales) if they choose to make a game that is unplayable and unsellable to 50M OG PS4 users.

Someone told me all you need to do is configure some ini files and use APIs!
