PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

I buy consoles for specific games. If I didn't have a PS4 I would be buying one for Uncharted 4. There's just no way that's a game I can miss. If I had roommates, I would have bought a Wii U just for Smash Bros by now, but I'm now waiting on the NX.

So that means if Last of Us 2 is coming to PS4K, I'm buying one regardless. No one is forcing people to buy these consoles day one anyways, and it's not like your current consoles don't work suddenly. I do believe that it's a legit concern that developers will not longer put the same amount of effort into developing games for the PS4 though.

There is a difference between games working on PS4, and them working properly. When developers start targeting PS4k/high end PC hardware, PS4 ports will suffer.

there were already a bunch of releases that can't even hit a stable 30fps target......add them not giving a shit even more and we are going to get framerate akin to fallout 3 on the PS3 for almost every release

So we went from a possible upgrade for 4k media play to a console that has has literally double the power of the ps4 and it's not a ps5 but a fucking incremental upgrade? Lol okay...

Worse still. Loads of people are going to buy expecting 4k 60 from twice the power. It's a weird upgrade and 2017 gives MS time to ponder its move. The worrying thing is, with it being so small of an upgrade whether Sony plan to do this more often with the obvious tech upgrades in the HMD revisions.

Correct. Some people need to know they are playing the best version of the game possible while pretending that high end PCs exist and will still be the top end anyways.

Right now developers are squeezing every last drop of performance that they can get out of my PS4, when this launches that will no longer be the case. Half of the optimization will go to the PS4k (if im lucky).

This negatively affects all PS4 owners if if the games still run on PS4.

PS4 = 1080p30
PS4.5 = 1080p60 (same graphics settings)

It's supposed to be 2.5-3x more powerful, so yeah...

It's morel likely gonna be higher resolution and more fancy but I don't expect 60fps at all for games on consoles nowadays.

Remember how eeeeeveryone thought ps4 would finally be the age of 60 fps games. Yeah nah

do you think that porting a game form PC to PS4 is as easy as just setting the graphics sliders to medium?

why do you think that doing PS4 and PS4K game has anything to do with porting PC game to PS4? How does that make any sense at all?

If we compare it to PC's, lets imagine a PC where only 2 GPU's exist. One is 950 and other is 970. And devs have to make a game for that PC.

Do you think this is hard? Do you think they port games between 950 and 970?

We all knew the CPU was going to probe a bottleneck this gen

Developers were still making PS3/360 games last year, the PS4 is NOT a bottleneck right now, third party developers havent even maxed it out yet.

The PS3/360 were good enough 3 months ago, and now all of a sudden the PS4 is too weak?

I feel that this is a solid move by Sony.

The new PS4k targeted at the "enthusiast" console gamer (that will be a thing now), and the standard PS4 drops to $250 in Oct 16 (or dare to dream $199) and breaks all Black Friday sales records.

Everyone wins!

Well, if you think about it most PS4 online MP games are 60fps, while almost all PS3 online MP games were 30fps. That's an improvement...

Who cares about higher resolution? Most people have 1080p screens.

That policy, if it will even exist in any form, will be dropped the very same second a new AAA VR title that can't hold even close to 60fps on the original PS4 hardware.

This is what I fear the most and why I'm now thinking about canceling my PSVR preorder. If PS4 was the only thing around then you know 100% all the time and money would be going to optimize it for that system. Now if something is just too difficult or would take too much time to figure out, fuck it.

Not like this Sony...

Usually it takes 3 consoles for a company to be complete goddamn idiots. Like Sony with the PS3. MS with the Xbone.

Sony hasn't even waited a full gen to throw their lead away. God job salvaging your gaming division only to kill it dead 2 years later. Goddamn. What fucking morons.

Where in the OP did you read Sony plans on killing support and quality control on PS4 altogether alongside developing exclusive PS4K software for a userbase of 0? C'mon man bro -_-.

Don't understand the fuss. My release PS4 will still work with all games, right?
It is nice that there is an alternative for people who want to get a better experience.
Look at COD BO3 last gen port. It runs worse than previous COD titles in the same consoles. The countdown for the same happening with PS4 games starts when PS4k launches.

Looking for that iPhone money, but the problem is iPhone sales completely dwarf PS4 sales. This is going to bite Sony in the ass.

No, unless for the games that need 60fps (FIFA, MP shooters etc.), devs will prefer better resolution and a better looking game overall rather than a more fluid experience.

that makes little sense since PS4 and PS4K would be on same platform, same tools... it has nothing to do with targeting high end PC.

PS4 is likely to be way more gimped with existence of XB1 than with PS4K.

Wouldn't be surprised. Sony is still the only manufacture to produce a 5.5" 4K panel in a smartphone.

Xperia Z5 Premium

Isn't that panel manufactured by Sharp?

I thought I read it's their 5.5" IGZO panel.

PS4 / Xbox One CPU, Jaguar @ 1.6 / 1.7 GHz, is a bottleneck, devs have talked about this. Ubisoft showed how they were doing stuff with GPGPU compute instead of on the CPU with AC: Unity at GDC 2014.

Wow, this is one big thread.

Looks like things just got exciting again. The arms race is back on, hope we get more leaks soon.

Not really got any issues with anyone launching again but we have plenty of years of evidence that would warn any platform holder not to fuck up your timing and message.

The Q1 2017 tentative date is interesting though, seems a bit late?

It was also stated that these games will in fact work for the PS4 but with considerable sacrifices made to performance.

I think "these games" means games made specifically for PS4k will be downgraded to run on PS4 not all games will be done this way.It might be like N3ds where certain games were only on N3ds however this time you atleast will get to play the certain games(downgraded) meant to showcase the upgraded console.

If it comes with some big games I'm buying one I'll probably keep my PS4 as a backup. It ain't coming if it is coming till 2017ish usually around the time in a cycle when people wish there was an upgrade.

Sony are going to big up the new version, but on paper it appears like the incremental updates you get on phones, tablets, laptops etc. and people don't need to throw out their old version every time and rush to buy the new thing.

Honestly, I don't think we need better IQ than Uncharted 4's IQ.

Video game development cost is already too high...

Overreact much?

I honestly don't see what the big deal is. Are people afraid of change? As long as your PS4 still plays games that are optimized for this PS4K, what's the big deal?

I hope MS releases a machine even more powerful, and Sony gets the short end of the stick again.

And in that VR event they said that having the same machine was a plus for the PSVR, I find it funny now in retrospect. Shit's done on the OG PS4 when the PS4K is out.

Before this thread I had concluded that 14nm and/or Polaris was a no go for PS4K because of cost and yields being too low for ~1 million units a month

So what process node will this 2X GPU powered console be manufactured on? It can't be 28nm realistically...is there a 20/22nm node in mass production?

I think the industry skipped to 14nm, there is no other option.

you don't know that.

That's 2 years after the launch of a true new gen, PS3 is lucky to still have cross-gem ports that run not so bad while the games look fantastic on current-gen.

Anyway if PS4K is 2017 and if it is the same thing as a new gen it means you'll have until 2019 before the multiplat games will get worse. But that will be the 6th anniversary of the PS4. Not so bad for a console buried today by loads of people here.

There is a difference between games working on PS4, and them working properly. When developers start targeting PS4k/high end PC hardware, PS4 ports will suffer.

When PC gamers complained that console hardware is actively holding back graphics tech I don't think anyone imagined that console gamers would actively fight for that right so hard, just so they could feel a bit more validated in their purchase.

This thread is blowing my mind.

people are ignoring this though to cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war.

Come on. Every dev will make their games for the upgraded console. PS4 games going forward will be downports. Might as well call it PS5.

If Microsoft doesn't do this...straight up, they will salvage the reputation they lost with the Xbone DRM shit. You can't split your userbase in two. This is a new console. Straight up.

Why is Sony taking notes from Apple?

Just because you can bring out a new version of your system every 6-8 months doesn't mean you should....
