PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

How will developers like Rockstar and CD Projekt Red deal with new hardware when they take 5-6 years for their games? Cyberpunk 2077 was announced in 2013 just before XBO/PS4 came out, and that game is unlikely to come out until 2017-2018, which is one hardware refresh later. Hell, if they run into issues and delay into 2019, that's right around the corner of a new hardware refresh. Will they take advantage of the third hardware refresh at all? Will they develop with the second refresh as base, or the original XBO/PS4? Will they change focus mid-development to accomplish bigger dreams similar to cutting off last-generation for Witcher 3?

How?
How?
How?
How?
Oh how did I not have the same questions for the Microsoft thread? Will Phil senpai notice me now at least?

While I understand why people who prefer longer console cycles are disappointed, I really don't get the "screw you sony, from now on it's PC for me" mentality. Isn't PC the same as the alleged PS4.5 plan, only more frequently, in perpetuity?

The only reason I'm pissed is because I bought a second PS4 in November. I guess I'll sell it for a couple hundred when PS4K hits shelves.

You would be better off selling it sooner rather than later. The price on the resale market is going to drastically fall once the PS4K hits the shelves.

1 thing i just realized, you need a 4ktv to actually enjoy the 4k resolution stuff right?
4k games look best on a 4k tv. But if you have a 1080p tv and you run a 4k game downscaled to 1080p you are going to notice a much cleaner image than if the game was running at 1080p natively.

If the PS4K was BC compatible, the move would be worth it for me.
The great thing is we wait what Nintemdo does first before we can make move.

UHD disc drives read BluRays too. The games will still be BluRays (I think). I can't see them selling 2 different discs per game.
But if a game takes advantage of the new model and so comes on a UHD, then the current PS4 wouldn't be able to read that would it? Meaning games would come on 2 discs.
I still think this is bullshit lol.

It has a more flexible upgrade system. If you feel have to upgrade either way some will think PC has the better upgrading model

Of course a PS4K would play PS4 games. Otherwise what would be the point, if only a handful of exclusive games get made.

An Ultra HD Blu-ray player with a few games? :)

PC games have better prices/ deals and free online though. For someone who buys more than 10 games a year PC is more value for money.

I'd just like to jump in and say while you are right in some ways stop assuming people buy console games at 59.99 MSRP. In fact, with all the deals with Amazon and BestBuy, plus PSN sales I can't remember the last time I paid more than 43 dollars for a new release title.

43 dollars being the cost of getting The Division for PS4 is the most recent example for me personally. The other purchase was Street Fighter V at 39.99 and Salt and Sanctuary for 19.99. Ultimately I think things balance out at the end. The upfront hardware is cheaper on the console space, the fact that you can get a 4K player built in to a 2x more powerful PS4 at potentially 399? Shit, sign me the fuck up. (then again I own two 4K displays so you can see why I'm interested).,

i see, thanks
maybe i can give away my ps4 to my nephew and get this ps4k or something lol

  • Buy PS3 for Last Guardian
  • Release date pushed back
  • Mod my PS3 because Last Guardian is probably vaporware
  • New info on game emerges!
  • Buy secondary PS3 (slim) for Last Guardian, just to be safe I can play it
  • Release date pushed back to PS4
  • Buy PS4 for Last Guardian
  • Release date pushed back
  • Release date for PS4K tentatively announced
  • Smash all of my Sony products and hate myself.

Dude that's bad planning by you, not Sony's fault.

Besides your PS4 will be just fine for TLG, it's not GOW4, the game doesn't look too demanding and it's releasing before the PS4K, would you really wait the extra months after TLG released to play it on PS4K (with probably not too drastic improvements in this case)?

"Twice" the GPU power would put it in 970 territory which would be pretty decent.

I don't want to know the Canadian price of this thing. lol

Seeing how I think VR is a mistake, then I think this whole thing is a mistake. I hope MS doesn't bank their next console on VR too.

Remember, forget the gimmicks it's about the games!

That has been slowly changing this gen with deeply discounted digital sales on console etc.

And for disc based console gamers there are always trade ins.

So I think the SW price advantage for PC is disappearing. Also Microsoft wanting to sell both the console ver and PC as the same unit just adds inertia to this.

Awesome. Can't wait to buy Witcher 3 remastered, Fallout 4 remastered and pay full price again.

Not sure how I feel about this......

They're offering $200 right now.

So you're going to take it and not have a ps4 until q1 2017?

Or wait until after the holidays so you can enjoy this year's games and then sell it when they're paying peanuts as everyone wants the new model?

deeply discounted digital sales on release date? You might get lucky with a few bucks off but on PC you have like GMG where you could get a new PC game for like 20% off easily.

I have been upgrading my PC for the last 10-15 years and I feel like I'm always behind in some areas, be it the processor or video card. The 970 set me back 300-400 dollars and it's great, but now my processor is old etc... And it's way too expensive to upgrade everything all at once.

Sega from the 90s would like to have a word with you :)
Actually the champ in that department is Atari.

Anyhow, my thoughts on this.....well, I was planning on getting a PS4 this year anyway, particularly for PSVR and particularly for Dreams, so for a person like myself the announcement of a PS4K isn't bad at all. But it does make me wonder if they could have done this in a different way. Certain PC motherboards are future-proof w/ other types of CPU processors. Since this PS4K seems to mainly be upgrading the GPU and CPU, why couldn't the PS4 had been designed w/ a similar setup?

Make it easy to access the innards (take a page from Lenovo on that front; accessing the innards of a Thinkcentre desktop is piss-easy), have some respect that your average owner is smart enough to NOT have the power on when they do so (or have it plugged in for that matter), and make the CPU/GPU replaceable. Hell, the hard drives already are, plus this saves owners of the older model money if they feel the need to upgrade. And since it would just be the CPU and GPU, it could probably be made available as replacements in a package for no more or even less than $100. I honestly don't think any early adopters would take issue w/ that.

Consoles are already highly PC-like and eventually the future these platforms are going to be defined more by their OS and marketplace than the hardware they run on. What I'm suggesting here is just an extra step in that inevitable direction that already has tangible, documented proof of concept in actual consumer electronics.

PS4.5 will use the same disks as PS4.0. If they want to, they can patch in an upgrade. They might still sell "PS4.5" versions, though, because I don't imagine devs doing these upgrades for free.

How can it be that cheap?

OP says the chip is smaller than ps4's

That means it uses polaris for sure, which is a 14nm new gen gpu (instead of ps4's gpu on 28nm)

A smaller chip means a lower cost, which means it'll be cheaper to make than the ps4

The cpu is unknown so there's no conclusions to be drawn for it

I suspect it's mostly empty talk. This board makes for some fun drama.

it'll depend for me. Now that I've calmed down with the news I'm willing to give it a chance IF I can get the new console through an upgrade system and maybe 200 out of pocket.

If I have to spend more I'll just build the PC I've been wanting to build.

The second statement you mentioned is simply dumb. The first statement makes sense. If upgrades get common for consoles some gamers will probably went (back) to the PC, would be cheaper in the long run and graphics are better on PC anyway.

By the way: Mixing politics with gaming is never a good idea.

Who would have thought that the much-criticized Wii U will end up have a longer run than the "mighty" PS4?

Unlike the Wii U, the PS4 isn't going away and will still sell extremely well. The PS4 is simply going to be the sub $300 entry level console and its sales will spike every time its price crosses an even lower threshold. I wouldn't be surprised at all, and in fact would expect, that the PS4 gets an internal redesign lowering its price below $249. On top of that I can see special $199 deals being made for things like Black Friday. That's going to be huge and will open up the console to a whole new market.

This hysteria is baseless. The standard PS4 is going to be THE lead platform for quite some time. It'll take like 3 years or more for the PS4K to overtake it, and that would be the natural end of the generation anyway.

I have absolutely no problems with the PS4K and generally I am a tech geek, but after the technolust for the specs of the PS4K died down I am not even sure that it is an automatic buy for me. If it turns out that the PS4K gets about as much improvement in graphics quality that the PS4 gets over the XB1, then it really isn't worth an entirely new console to me. PSVR could change my mind because graphical differences should be more apparent there.

The point I'm trying to make is that the PS4K isn't going to be like a new console generation that obsoletes the one before it. After an initial spike it's going to be a slow sell that will gradually ramp up.

Actually now it's if trump is elected. But we building a wall first so too bad. They will move through the stages of grief soon don't worry
Well, it's kind of understandable.

If the main reason holding those people back from gaming on PC was the upgrade cycles, it would stand to reason that those people would abandon a console if it adopted that same cycle with hardly any of the benefits that PC gaming sees.

Not to say the only benefit of console over PCs is the lack of upgrade cycle, but it's not unreasonable for it to be the only reason holding someone back.

It just sounds like they're just trying to extend the generation to match last gen. It's kind of disappointing that the upgrade is seemingly substantial because this could lead to poorly optimized games on the current model.
