PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

When this goes mainstream, I do expect a lot of flak from a lot more consumers who have very recently purchased a machine, maybe in America/EU the concept of trading in or selling off consoles is rather easy and simple but other markets this is not the case at all.

Most consumers across a lot of regions across the globe are already playing more than $499 for a PS4, case point India which pays $600 for the base model, therefore it is a significant investment for them. No way is someone buying another machine so quickly.

You'll still get those games though.

There's just a good probability they will run and look like fud on the old machine seeing as devs can't focus on that one alone.

nintendo's been doing it with handhelds successfully. i think it's okay that they do this and that sony does it with dedicated hardware too. i just think it isn't right that customers should expect that sony was going to do this when it's something they haven't done before.

going forward now? sure, you should be expecting something like a ps5, ps5.5, ps6, ps6.5, etc.

Sony's first party output has been a mess so far, utterly useless. The PS4 exclusives reminds me of what the Vita had, almost everything was pure trash. Unlike the Vita though, the PS4 is currently being saved by amazing third party games.

Thanks for the reply, and yeah agreed - PS4K development would just mean getting a way of detecting the hardware & using a different performance profile in the software.
 
Hope it bombs and nobody ever tries this again.

Anyone not believing the standard PS4 will end up with gimped or unoptimised versions of games is kidding themselves, there is a good history of weaker hardware getting shafted.

Not why I buy consoles.

I think the reasons for it are fairly simple. After the debacle that was the PS3, and Sony being in such bad shape, they couldn't afford to release a super high performance PS4 subsidised at a huge loss the way they did the PS3 or PS2. So they instead released something fairly mediocre in performance, at less of a loss, but at a more affordable price. Fast forward to today, where not only are they a dominant market leader, but they also have a VR unit coming out which they've probably realised cannot be properly catered for by the PS4, and instead needs more powerful hardware, hence we're in the situation we are.

The ideal scenario is basically console manufacturers getting it right in the first place, by releasing more powerful hardware at the start of a new cycle, at a more subsidised cost (e.g. taking a notable loss on every console sold at launch), but obviously manufacturers are less willing to do that these days, as it poses more of a financial risk.

Way too small of an improvement for that, would be the smallest generational leap in console history (except for GCN -> Wii). This will get you significantly better performance in the type of games you already see for PS4 today, or noticeable improvements at similar performance, but it won't make anything that looks like a true generational leap possible. It will basically be like running the same PC game on two PCs, where one can run it maxed and the other has to settle for medium settings.

I agree when PS5 comes they should say they will upgrade every few years so people will know.
It's that way for everything else but new for consoles .

I certainly agree. They have been utterly rubbish this gen. Last gen they started out slow and picked it up around 2009. We're in 2016 now, let's hope history will repeat itself. At least, now I know to wait a minimum of 3 years before buying a ps5.

This is exactly the point many are missing. Unless the ps4k is a flop, the original ps4 will get more and more cross-gen games with a consistent drop in quality and performance as the gen goes on.

It'll still be the same quality we would get without PS4K but obviously a 2x more powerful machine will make it look fud in comparison.

I believe that for first party (as in a clear distinction between the two), but 3rd party will be all over the place with maybe some being higher on the PS4.

To make matters worse, I expect to see devs trying to brute force everything. Innovative end of gen titles will be a thing of the past. This new model will push the focus on graphics over good air and good gameplay. Considering that the improvements gameplay this gen has been terrible so far, this is not a good thing.

I don't see why Sony feels the need to attempt this stupid idea. It's not always about the power. We were always happy with what the PS4.0 could do.

Why would you ever tell people that something better will be out soon? They'd stop buying your current product. The first time this happens will take some adjustment, but people will get used to it.

Mainstream purchasers buying the ps4 for $100 less after three years won't be too upset - they wanted the ps4 at that price - no different from people buying iPad mini 3 instead of 4 because of price sensitivity.

And I really can't see games being significantly downgraded for ps4. Both ps4 and ps4k will be PC versions with some options dialled down - ps4 will just turn them down more. Probably get medium setting still and it doesn't mean the frame rate suffers
 
Whoever said people are more tech savvy than ever obviously doesn't work with the general public much or talk to people outside enthusiast sites like this.

People have more tech in their homes but most have no clue about whats inside and how it works. We live in an age now when your tech products break you throw them away and buy new ones, no one fixes anything or cares about how it works.

No one is forcing consumers into buying another machine though. Your entire post about other countries and the price differences makes no sense since no one is being forced into the newer model. The newer model will exist for those that want the extra horse power or to drive their new 4k TV set. It is not like Sony is going to release this in India and tell all consumers in India that you now MUST buy this newer version because the one you just bought months ago we will cease all development and support for.

It's basically because the PS4 is not powerful enough to properly handle VR games, not at the kind of graphical fidelity many people have come to expect or are now accustom to anyway, not at the increased frame rates required of VR anyway.

Well, no shit they'll run worse on an older hardware, but will they run worse than they do now? That's the odd conclusion some people are making, and I bet every time we get framerate fluctuations or sub-1080p people are going to claim it's because of the PS4k, eventhough the issues are occurring already.

There will be no coding to the metal on vanilla PS4, hence games won't be as visually or technically impressive as they would be without another new PS4 SKU in the mix.

I'm guessing Sony will mandate all 1st party devs to focus on PS4K as that is the "shiny" version that makes more money.

All in all I said a "probability" so naturally I could be wrong and old PS4 guys get amazing ports.

Seems like things have been leaked way too early and it all started with Microsoft announcing they'd move to an upgrade model in the future.
I wonder how the situation will be handled. Even E3 might be too soon to announce this, in the meantime more and more evidence will pile up.
There are also so many issues to discuss about...will they put restrictions to developers in how to use the extra power? Are they going to make sure in some way that current PS4 users won't get more and more gimped versions of future games? Will they continue to sell and support both models actively or their aim is to transition to the new model alone raising the price and convincing old users to upgrade?
What kind of price delta there will be initially between the two models? 100$ or more?
Both models will see a slimlined form factor?
If this PS4K launches too close to PSVR it might have a negative impact on the PSVR success since many people will prefer to invest in the PS4K.

One thing is certain, Sony was riding on a successful straight road, now there are doubts everywhere.
 
Sell my PS4 and get the PS4K when its released.. only 'lose' about £150 from Ps4 release to PS4K release.. I'll take that, I love my ps4.

It's not about power.
It's about pushing 4K onto the masses so their other business units (tvs, movies & services) can profit.

4K is part of Sonys ecosystem whether some like it or not, they are a technology company after all.

Nib PS4 can't even handle normal games like how devs want .
UC4 being 1080p @60fps for SP and MP would be such a dream .

Isn't that a huge red flag for people looking to buy PSVR at release? Even people willing to upgrade would be better served by waiting for the new PS4.
