Final Fantasy XV: Platinum Demo Thread

This has been my stance from the beginning. I am only repeating it now that I have a bit of time with the Demo. Why on earth would they make a FF that plays like a poor man's KH when there is an actual KH releasing at some point in the future? Not everyone likes both. I certainly do not care for how KH plays but I love FF. Definitely skipping this one now. I have been playing these games since FF1 when I was a kid and have bought just about every one of them at launch but this game bears little resemblance to those games. I really hope the next game is turn based proper rather than these half measures that end up playing like garbage. Remember when turn based was slammed for "you only hold down X" well now it is O and maybe you hold Square now too.

Just played it...DAMN it was short!

Music was fantastic and the visuals were as well (I'm really not sure what people are complaining about there).

Performance was a bit rough around the edges with stuttering and sound cutting out but hopefully they can be somewhat cleaned over the next few months.

Combat is fun as hell, although a bit "laggy". I think that's just something to get used to though. Could definitely feel the weapon weights though, which I loved.

The only MAJOR gripe I have is that the camera is too close to Noctis. Move it back a little SE!

Did you play the boss a second time when the teleport options open up?

The game runs like shit. It's the worst game I ever played on Xbox One in terms of FPS. I'm sure it runs at less then 10 fps during the final fight.

warpping to the enemy from far distance while eqipping Broadsword will stagger him in mid air change your weapon and do some combo in mid combo move L3 will do air flips and airial dodges , I'm dodging his attacks with warping more useful than normal roll :) .

hint: change the Lock-on button from R3 to R1 that will make your life easier

This sounds promising. Do I have to let go of the attack button to do air moves? On my way back to the Golem right now. Will test in a few minutes.

I haven't played it yet, but I did watch some of the demo online and Carbuncle is bothering me a bit. The text messages he sends don't seem to really match up with the character of screen. The messages seem to be bubbly and energetic, while actual character just stands there pretty emotionless.

I know that since animals don't have human faces, they don't emote the same way, they they can still show signs of life. Carbuncle being so animated kinda makes a pretty big disconnect.

This is exactly how I felt about him. I stopped caring about his messages within 5 min of playing and felt they were a distraction from what this tech demo is trying to show you.

Does weather and the time cycle contribute anything to the gameplay other than just for tech demo purposes?

Also what does the blue circle do when it's full?

Also, maybe confusing if you didn't play Duscae, but control in the iron giant fight is slick. That extended air combo after warp is awesome.

Weather changes are cosmetic to show you the environment cycle in a short span of time.
Blue Circle seems like the local limit break system. When fully charged it lets you use the spinning weapons thing that does a lot of damage.

How do you change your buttons? Can't see it in the menu. Or can you only do it at the title screen menu.

As somebody who has no feelings at all about FF, I thought this was a nice tech demo (with some performance issues, three single-digit dips during 25mins of play is rather eh...). Didn't intice me to buy the main game in the slightest however, didn't like the combat.

Don't know where all these FPS drop complaints are coming from. The only time I frame drops was when I cast the meteor spell and ran into it.

Other than that, this is a fantastic tech demo.

Edit: How do you remove the button tutorial pop up?

No, it doesn't play at all like Kingdom Hearts.

I just finished the demo and thought the same thing. It definitely had that Kingdom Hearts feel. Maybe they weren't trying to do that, but that's the way it felt.

Nothing against Square Enix, but that wasn't a great demo. It should have been more representative of what the game was going to be about. On top of that, the game spends so much time with simple attacks and such, only to throw you up against a boss that requires a ton more skill to beat. Why not do that before that point? Why not introduce more levels of the gameplay along the way? Pretty frustrating.

I don't care too much about the look since it is is what it is. However, the attacking is floaty and not fast feeling at all. At least Kingdom Hearts gives a better feeling of attacking, block, dodging, etc. Nice animation is cool and all, but how the player interacts with the system is the most important thing...especially for an action game.

Not much else to say that hasn't already been said. Not sure I'll be picking this up when it comes out. I guess we'll see.

EDIT: Oh, and the camera not being centered on Noctis is annoying. This is especially jarring when driving since the camera seems to be "over the shoulder" instead of directly behind. I really hope we get a chance to change this in the final game.

Terrible demo, everything from it looks bad, from the IQ to the level design and the combat are messy as hell... One of the worst FF I've played since a long time, my hype goes to 100 to -200 after this...

Final Fantasy XIV was that game.

I'm sure that was the case among the mmorpg crowd but the average console owing FF fan cared more about the first gen 7 console mainline entry (XIII) and It didn't live up to many people's expectations.
SE seem to have everything riding on FFXV, but these latest impressions don''t bode well.

People complain for something that isn't even close to the OG game, this is a poor optimized tech demo where you move a single char without all his mechanics.

I don't know why SE released this alternative demo that doesn't show the true game experience. They should released Duscae 3.0 or nothing.

Fun enough demo demonstrating the engine - not sure how I feel about the fighting systems (warping was never explained and I barely know how it even works) but it seems promising. Though it looked pretty good on Xbone with noticeable framerate dips.

Have to wait until after work to try it out looking forward to it.

I enjoyed Duscae once I got the hang of it, interested to see what has changed. I did play a lot more 1.0 than 2.0 Duscae though.

I can understand how coming into that battle system with no experience could be difficult.

How does this demo's performance compare to Episode Duscae performance?! Was it as bad?

Feels a lot better to me on PS4. Framerate still drops during one segment where some heavy physics stuff is going on but it's nothing too bad.

I feel a lot more excited about the game than I did after Episode Duscae's demo truthfully. Episode Duscae's combat felt a whole lot worse to me - that goblin cave especially was just a long chore of holding circle until everything died. I get not liking the combat in this demo but compared to ED's, I'm loving the hell out of it. Demo made me feel a lot more emotionally invested in everything as well, which is kind of what I needed at this point.

Only major gripes are that the IQ's still a bit too crummy for my taste (I'm a bit use to it - I've had that issue with a lot of games this generation doing too much at too low a resolution - but it's still annoying) and the camera needs to be pulled back a bit more. Gave me early PS3/360 game flashbacks during that intro segment.

Dat next-gen vaseline.
Brings back the memories of running AC Unity on my old PC.

very short demo. I found young noctis (SP?) part is very very very boring. the demo that came with FFtype 0 HD is much better ( and smoother too wtf)

No , keep an eye on your MP bar

You can't in the game unfortunately , but you can change it from playstation settings

Kind of a really odd demo overall for a game coming out in a few months. It's a tech demo essentially. It's REALLY weird in that I think the demo expects me to be impressed by stuff that has existed in games for a very long time now. Like, look at this! A real-time day night cycle! Check out this real-time physics, the blocks fall over realistically! Oh wow, different weather effects! That said, the combat was more interesting than FFXIII for me, but then I again I really hated FFXIII's combat system. That said I'm not really a fan of ARPG's. Presentation-wise, the demo had really good production values (save for the courtyard area prior to teleporting to the boss fight) and the music, especially in the Honey I Shrunk the Kids part, was good. I'm intrigued, but nothing about the demo is compelling me to pre-order at the moment. I will probably give the game a shot when it comes out.

If Carbuncle was actually well animated so that you could connect the messages with the character is would have been really cute. I'd have loved to see that character! But, a glorified Fennec Fox walking around while inane text messages display on the screen? That doesn't make for an interesting character.

Yup.

If they can't do action RPG right, just don't do it. Action open world RPG is so demanding, and they have to go all flashy because it's FF. Even the more realistic western RPGs are still struggling with IQ & performance after all these years. The action combat doesn't seem to be that good anyway.

Action was a mistake.

I'm not one of those people who are "turn based or bust". I'm perfectly fine with Action RPG's. More importantly for me is whatever they pick, it just has to be good. I wasn't a fan of Duscae's combat and this doesn't inspire me either. Action systems can be amazing. But if they're bad then they are really bad. Not saying this is that bad but from what we've seen and played thus far it's worse that any other FF battle system I've played.

It's not that turn based is inherently better than Action. I'd say it just has a higher floor. If the feel of action is off it can ruin the whole combat. See the compaints about Witcher III. Turn based on the other hand doesn't really have that weakness in terms of mechanical feel since it's usually more tactically driven and strategic.

Turn based or Action is fine. But if you do Action do it right. Otherwise you may as well just stick with what works in turn based

For the freely available demo releasing 6 months before the game, this was such a poor decision. Graphically it doesn't look that impressive. The combat is a chore and still lacking in options. Framerate is not stable. Even moving around just feels so sluggish and unwieldy.

Honestly, as much as I disliked Duscae, it was still better than this.

I don't know if it's already been mentioned in this thread, but the pixel counters at Beyond3D said that this demo is 1080p on PS4. Anyway, I'll be trying out this demo this weekend despite never having played an FF game.

I didn't really run into any frame drops and the IQ is just fine. Graphics are beautiful, they just need to fix the aliasing on the hair and improve the shadows. Animation and physics are great, I love that even his shoe laces have physics.
Square messed up calling this the "Platinum Demo" though, they really shoulda called it a playable tech demo.

I just finished the demo, after playing both its clear Final Fantasy mainline games are no longer for me. It wants to be an ARPG but its system is at least 10 years old, it just looks modern. The movie looks cool though so I'll watch that.
