What made the serie great ?
That's actually a great question. I think they lost their touch by trying to much to please everyone. Budgets are so big nowadays, it needs to sell several millions. JRPGs are quite a niche (perhaps not anymore) but as much as I love Octopath Traveler, I don't expect that kind of titles got the same sales.

I loved it, but wish some things were done differently:

-Remove all bloated quests, replace with a few deep and proper side quests.
-More weapon options.
-Keep the story consistent with how it was at the beginning.

Regardless, I really enjoyed it. It had such an awesome fantasy vibe, I wish there was more to see and do in the world.

I thought it was fine. I mean it was fine for a AAA game.

Later I played Rebirth and liked it even more.

I'm now playing Expedition 33 and I'm amazed at what they did with that budget. It's pretty good.

When did Final Fantasy go astray?

VII? VIII? XV?

Some of the best 3rd person hack n slash combat, memorable characters, awesome set pieces, great soundtrack.. Coulda done with less padding.

I haven't purchase FF7 remake yet, I fear I'll get the same result.

FF7 Remake and Rebirth are incalculably superior games. They might not be for everyone, but at least they fit the basic profile of what a RPG is and have enough agency, strategy, variety, and entertainment value to keep you from falling asleep, unlike XVI.

Many will tell you XIII, but I liked it. XV was the first single player game to straight up disappoint me. XVI is somehow worse. If it wasn't for the FF7 remake project I'd be actively ignoring this franchise by now.

Imo It never did, FF is mainly about the story, journey and its characters, back in the day RPG was the easier genre to fit all this elements together, all FF games for better or worse does the same thing, they ll focus on story, journey and characters, the difference is that nowadays the game doesnt need to be stuck in "tradicional" RPG format to deliver this 3 cores aspects of the séries.

it amazes me how lots of "fans" dont get that till this date.

FF stories are trash and people who play jrpgs for the story should learn to read books

It was terrible, but they've been terrible for a while now.
The series is so far removed from its roots, I dunno why I keep bothering with it, fomo I guess.
Lost Odyssey is on sale for like 8 bucks right now, I think I'm finally gonna try it out and see if I can't recapture some of that old jrpg goodness.

Felt like it was two teams that made it.

The concept and the beginning of the game had great promise, but declined into formulaic blah.

In the end, I felt like they just should have made Clive(itcher).
