PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

Because this new hardware will magically get rid of game development shortcomings.

Game development is a series of sacrifices, and constantly striking a balance between pushing graphical fidelity, framerate, resolution, etc. with the hardware that is available to you. This goes double for game development on consoles. The games that perform poorly didn't strike that balance, and while it may seem like it's the hardware that isn't powerful enough, in reality if a game is built from ground up to run at a steady 60fps at 1080p or what have you, that's possible on any modern gaming hardware.

That's not to point the finger squarely at the developer. A lot of times when there's performance issues or they make the choice to go 30 fps instead of 60, or have to do dynamic resolution switching, it's mostly a product of a bunch of different factors, not all of them within control. Maybe fixing requires a complete refactor of the code, maybe it's publisher pressure to get a game out by X time, maybe it's a financial decision, maybe it's just a conscious choice to sacrifice performance for a game that looks better in screenshots, maybe the optimization that usually happens at the tail end of development didn't come together as well as they wanted. Once again, none of these have anything to do with the hardware.

Late last generation people were hailing the new consoles as the harbinger of 1080p and constant-framerate goodness (many were insisting games would start running at 60fps by default!) because they blamed last-gen hardware. Well, that didn't happen. The generation before people did the same thing, and we still got some games that looked crappy or performed crappy, or both. We would think that at some point people will realize that game performance, resolution, and framerate is entirely dependent on the software side of things. A mid-gen spec bump isn't going to magically solve all these issues. You're still gonna get PS4K-optimized games that run at 30 fps guys, those decisions have nothing to do with the hardware the games run on.

Bloodborne is a poor example FROM software is notorious for that. Driveclub, KZ, and UC4 run very nice with no performance issue. Limitations were kept in mind and the necessary cuts and tricks were made to make it work. Those won't be the focus this time around with the 4.5 Not as much optimization or clever techniques will be used on 4.5 given the extra buffer they have. Instead they'll take significant cuts to make sure it runs on the 4. I will not be surprised if after UC4 and maybe horizon, that we don't see any games best those ones visually. UC1-2-3 were huge improvements. UC4-5 will see a monumental leap on 4.5, and on 4 it may be lesser in some ways. This is speculation, but I wouldn't be shocked.

We saw a huge improvement on PS3 cause cell was unknown this is not the case for PS4 .
Also if UC5 goes for 60fps on PS4k that already takes up all the extra power it has over PS4.
This is not some huge leap we talking about here only 2 times .

Take UC4 on PS4K it could be 1080p@60fps both MP and SP with a little better effects vs what we have now .

All apps ran consistently during this time?

legitimately asking
I did the same as he did (iPad 2 to iPad Air 2). By 2013 there was a racing game from EA that a friend had in his iPad 4. I downloaded it for my iPad 2 and it ran like shite. This was a year and a half after iPad 2 was released and a few months after iPad 4.

BTW, I love this thread:

Don´t own a PC so I don´t care.
more than 1/6th of my posts have been in this thread lol

so I've been thinking about games already released (or coming out soon) that could maybe receive PS4K updates

Uncharted 4 the obvious one. maybe Witcher 3 as well? GTA V?

Recently plugged my 360 back in to play some MW2 and I was shocked, I mean SHOCKED, at how bad it looked.

I'm currently replaying The Last of Us on PS3 while I wait for Uncharted 4 to ship, and I had exactly the same feeling! And this is the poster child game for last gen graphics!

Strangely though, I've also been playing some OG XBox games, rocking the 6th gen, an nd have been thoroughly impressed by how well the graphics have held up!

The only games that are always great when I come back to them are 16bit Nintendo games.

I am only excited about God of War 4 .Releasing better version of PS4 will make optimization of new games worse and Sony could end up losing players.
We haven't seen most of PS4 yet so it doesn't seem a good move.

one serious question.
xbox owners do you guys wont buy QB because it looks better on pc and it 720p30fps on xbox?

I've pre ordered for xbox one and I don't even have a gaming PC. Yet I get a free copy for PC that's there for me when ever I get one. Everything's good with me.

Do you guys think the upscaling solution will be Sony's X1 chip inside the PS4K?

It could be based off the same technology, sure. Just purchased a Sony 4K, and this chip delivers. The 1080p upscale to 4K is phenomenal.

Now for those with a 4K set without something as good as the X1 quality scaler, they will be in for a treat if so.

I have a tech question if anyone knows... if the system has the scaler on board and does it before it shoots the signal to the TV, does that effect input lag in a good way at all? Or is it so fast, it does not effect a thing really?

Osiris did they say anything about using an APU again? If they haven't decided on what cpu to use yet I can't imagine they'll use an apu.

Jaguar and puma are both on 28nm, I don't think amd would just go and design two new custom apus for sony using polaris while they make up their mind about which cpu they want to use in it.

Also has anyone made the obvious PS4U joke yet? (it works a lot better than wii u (we you) )

God a remastered remaster edition to go with the ps4 remastered comsole.

We need to go deeper.

I was being a little snarky. It won't be a panacea. But maybe 3rd parties can lead on PC and transition games easily to both platforms.

As for the AAA titles Sony develops it can be inferred that they will be tailored nicely to both systems. One will obviously run better than the other.

More choices isn't necessarily a bad thing.

It does when it can add considerable production time if they let's say update their current engine to use PS4K, and then have to scale it down to have it work properly on PS4.

Having bigger specs doesn't cure poor engine optimization, and game code.

I'd like to see that.

Has anyone actually gotten booed at E3? I only remember awkward "please clap"-type silences.

Off the top of my head I remember near complete silence combined with a couple of boos when Sony announced that the Vita's 3G functionality was exclusive to AT&T.

They deserve the boos. Hope it happens.

What in the world is this kind of logic?

Lets boo the company because they are offering more options to their player base.

How dare they keep the hardware static instead of giving more power to those who want it?

Lets keep the hardware static for both consoles, and bitch and moan endlessly when their titles fail to hit 1080p/60FPS.

iPads went through some intense growth in terms of processing power.
iPad-Air-2.002-640x470.png

(3.5 years of power improvements)

At that time, every successive revision outsold the previous version by a wide margin. Apple released the iPad 4 what, 6 moths after the iPad 3? It was a lot easier for developers to forget about the last model, especially with less buyer awareness and attention due to relatively inexpensive app costs.

It's not going to add some huge amount of time because they already do it on PC.
They will just scale it down less for PS4 .

You confuse me, lol.

In his defense, we are all confused. I was personally hoping $399 for Fall 2017, but $499 for Fall 2016 is too high, too soon and too conflicting with PSVR's release. Releasing multiple products in the same year sounds disastrous.

I may cancel PSVR as well if this console is as big of an upgrade as it sounds.

Then ask me I posted everything I know I have never gone this far out on a limb but if this is wrong upper management at the three biggest games retailers in America have all been lied to.
Interesting. Time to Start some digging around with retail contacts to see if any info can be found.

Osiris you mentioned time table for release is near the time of the org ps4. So it is in fact coming out this calendar year?

Yeah they expect people to buy $1000 worth of hardware + games + maybe 4K TVs? Like what?

They don't. They don't have lofty expectations for psvr. I'm trying to remember where the supposed projections were discussed. This is a product for people that want better performance and 4K output. VR works with the PS4. Some want both. Others only want one. There is no expectation or mandate to purchase both

Don't forget that iPad is a computational, communication and recreation product, not a gaming device.

Well, Sony sure as hell hopes they sell both, if they don't want to lose money manufacturing them and no one buys them.

Are you people spouting "more options" serious? You could at least *try* to understand why others are upset. If you honestly think more options are the only possible outcome of this, you're being incredibly naive and not looking at the big picture.

Edit: For the record, I can understand people being excited for the PS4k. Some don't see it as a big deal, and that's fine, but you could at least try to understand the reasoning behind others being worried.

They will just scale it down less for PS4 .

So just like Unity was scaled down...

Just like the witcher 3 was scaled down....

If developers now having issues because of their shit optimization of engines, and game code how the fuck do you think it will be once they go 4K?

This is a cutscene, not actual gameplay. The Uncharted cutscenes have always looked superior to gameplay.

Uncharted cutscenes were FMVs before. In U4 everything is rendered in realtime, both gameplay and cinematics without model switching between those modes.

Order 1886 had the same approach. Same models, all cutscenes in realtime, no visible transitions.

edit - just googled a bit, and I found this gem of a gif. Had to post it
