PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

I have to see the full specs but i rather they spend money on power than HDD space.
I have more than one laptop HDD sitting around here i can put in .
It rather funny to see that i semi hype about hardware again so soon but i all for this .

I don't like the $500GB idea either, but the thing is, I can upgrade a HDD myself for a decent price, but I cannot upgrade the PS4K's CPU or GPU....

Ultimately I believe this is about VR marketshare. I think sony wants to win that war long term. Ultimately the PSVR wouldn't be able to do that (or at least sony doesn't think so) with the current power the ps4 is running. They want to run AAA quality in VR, not all the indies and specified games. The closest thing to AAA running on VR at the moment is Rigs, but even that is somewhat small in scale.
This is what I also believe.

They are putting at risk current console bussiness model and their reputation for a not so sure chance of being the de facto VR product.

The console industry is effectively dead with this announcement IMO. The architecture is basically a pc, the business model is essentially pc, etc. the only thing consoles have with this style of business against PC are the exclusives.

Maybe they really want a VR version of No Man's Sky and just can't get it to work on PS4.

Hence, PS4K.

No Man's sky on VR is a pipe dream on the regular ps4. They have already said they're struggling to hit 60 fps. When you're struggling that implies that even if they do hit it, there are guaranteed to be occasional dips, which immediately means no go on VR. On top of that they need a TON more power to run it in VR. It's not happening period, unless of course they gimp the hell out of it.

This is my array of thougths and feelings in the exact order.

First.

*sits down*

wuuuuuuuut this is cray

then when I shake myself I told my self....

So the worst outcome i imagined.

and shout

fuck
this
shit

I want no part of this, we just started this gen!

and....

Wow, shit O_O

So why isn't this a PS5 exactly?

then I got angry again and said

This will end the "PC is more expensive" argument for sure.

I'm done with consoles if this is all true.

In this part I'm in grief so I'm in the phase of denial

I.. I mean.. I don't... I can't.. even.

Fuck.
Why not just call it PS5 and have it backwards compatible with PS4? That would make me feel better about owning two OG PS4s.

Then acceptance

Oh boy. I'm not sure if I'm going to like this

Yup. I'm done with home console gaming if this becomes a trend.

It better be more than 2xGPU for that price.

It's also 2x CPU. Sonys new policy is to only sell items in the black, so they will not be selling this at a loss. In order to do that it will have to be 499

Agreed. It encompasses all their interests and investments.

This was my concern when morpheus was first announced. I was scared at just how invested sony was in VR and I imagined this is where they were headed :/

Your regular games will still be there, lol.

Every large corporation is heavily invested in VR. How else do they finally plug us into the matrix... if we are not already. ;)

I'm not sure why people are so upset.

I too would prefer to see a 'PS5', but I'd rather have a more powerful home console than the gimped hardware that we currently have.

I thought we would see a big leap in graphics, but honestly, there hasn't been. Visuals look mostly the same as last gen, except everything is more refined. If this means we will finally get a sizeable upgrade, then I'm all for it.

No one is forcing you to buy this. It's optional. Just like how purchasing the most expensive GPU in the world is optional.

I really don't believe the negative responses to be doom and gloom. Console fans are where they are due to being able to feel confident that their purchase will stay specialized for 5-7 years. I can't see people being happy with the new model of upgrades every few years. The backwards compatibility will be nice, but the difference between console and PC will be negligible at this point :/

Recently plugged my 360 back in to play some MW2 and I was shocked, I mean SHOCKED, at how bad it looked.

I always thought the same, but actually playing some last gen games really opened my eyes.

Also random info I read a bit ago. Detroit will use a Forward+ renderer similar to The Order.

What is Detroit?

If you don't buy this then you can't bitch about framerates, downgrades and resolution. Just chill

You absolutely can. Games may run crappy if they're not a primary focus on ps4 vs. 4k, for instance what he has said about God Of War4k and deep down, which will likely be lesser experiences on ps4.

If they give us external hdd support, they can throw in 100gb for all I care. lol

Which they would have regardless if this existed or not. It is just now, you have a metric to compare.

Come on, lol.

The only thing I am not looking forward to when this hits, is blaming it for the shortcomings of the current systems now.

Agreed.

Either way, they are easily swappable, but my most wanted feature in the firmware is USB HDD gaming support.

Nope, but it's possible that Crytek showed Yoshida the difference between Robinson in PS4 and Robinson in hardware with specs similar to those of the PS4k and he said wow.

It isn't unprecedented.

As talked about in the past, Gran Turismo is a flagship title for visuals on sony hardware. If sony really wants that to be a killer app for VR adoption (given it's popularity), they also don't want the game to take a major visual drop. They'll need the extra power to even have it as a possibility, which I'm still skeptical it'll look great on this hardware.

Heh as those 4K version won't have any problems, console games will still be compared to PC and with the new graphics cards coming out this year the gap between console and PC won't change as much as people think.

I don't like this one bit. I just bought my ps4 a little over a year ago. It was bad enough knowing we just went from a 9 year cycle back to the old-school 5 year cycle, but now knowing that 2 years after my purchase, my experience will be gimped because they want to release a .5 system really pisses me off. This is not the mobile market!!! I cannot justify buying a new console every 2 years!

You don't have too, you're getting the full console experience with ps4, many games are already gimped on it, Bloodborne has bad performance, driveclub is a Racer at 30fps, uncharted 4 should have been 60fps, then you have games like both ass creed, evil within, witcher 3, which are a huge downgrade compared to the pc versions. Look at the PS4K as more like a pc like experience but with Sony exclusives and a amazing value for what you're getting its optional, now depending on the PS4K price you can sell your ps4 for 250$ and upgrade to ps4k for 150 or 250 more.

16nm is theoretically possible for this year but man they would be cutting it close. Really just depends on how yields are at AMD right now.

I am not an insider. I come to this forum to talk with gamer's about my passion and my interests. Yes I work in the industry. There.
I'd like some confirmation also.

Questions to OsirisBlack; some of the following questions have different answers before and after the October VR launch which occurs after a firmware update.

The PS VR goggles plug into a HDMI 1.4 port or a HDMI 2?
Can the 2013 Launch PS4 support UHD Blu-ray with a firmware update?
If Not the Launch PS4, can the 2015 second version support UHD Blu-ray?
What chip in the PS4 is the Media TEE?
The movie industry requires HDCP 2 to take place in the HDMI chip like a HDMI 1.4 chip or the Media TEE?
What does the VR breakout box do?
Up-scaling media be it a game or Movie occurs in what chip in the PS4?
Where does Playready DRM occur?
Vision processing for head and accessory tracking first occurs in what chip?
Vision processing to distort the video for Goggles occurs in what chip?
Where does frame rate doubling for VR occur?

Whern comparing a PC with a Nvidia non VR ready GPU of PS4 GPU performance, how much performance increase does the PS4 have due to the DSP accelerators being used for VR? Or conversely how many of the GPU cycles would be needed to support VR if it had no accelerators?

The last question may point to a misunderstanding on your part. Are they saying new hardware or firmware update increasing performance by 2X for some functions?

More space rather than more power? What's the point of upgrade then if it's about the most power you can get away with $500

I'd sell it without a disc in it, because at this point most will change that anyway, but yeah of course that wouldn't fly ;)

Of course you're right, for an updated console like that in the middle of the cycle they have to go all out with power. I was just reacting to that info without thinking too much about it, sorry. But I'm still out though, 500$ is too much for me.

No that's not true though, you can think that, that's fine, but the game would've been made for ps4, not with the 4k in mind. Think of it this way. GOW3 ran like a dream, but if a 3.5 existed it would've looked even better than it did. The ps3 version likely would've had to take sacrifices in framerate/resolution/fidelity in order to get it to run. I can't see things being straight up even with simple drops. If they're developing for the new hardware in mind (like OP has said), they will do everything they can to maximize that, then do everything possible to make sure it somehow gets going on the ps4. In order to do that the ps4 hardware will not be maximized.

The primary focus is gonna be ps4 people, it will have a 50 million lead by the time ps4k comes out.

Honestly you can't. The countless comparisons between platforms, framerate arguments, resolution issues and downgrades resulted in this new system. Not directly, but this definitely informed its creation.

What kills me is that people CONSTANTLY bitch about these issues and here we have it, a new system that will improve and/or solve those issues.

And people begin bitching about THIS NEW SYSTEM.

You know you're all going to buy it.

You forget Ascension did not run like a dream... and there was no 3.5. ;)

It is the same ecosystem, the same disc will run on both, I am sure they will maximize the PS4, and get that much more out of it on the PS4K.

Give these developers some credit man.

I'm not bitching about it, because yes I will buy it, but I think it's a poor move on sonys part. Yes it fixes tthose issues you talk about, but the idea is this 4.5 will create more of those framerate issues since games will be more focused on running on the 4.5.

At this point it's just a matter of wait and see, so I think we should stop the debate where it's at. Let's see when it comes out.
