PS4K information (~2x GPU power w/ clock+, new CPU, price, tent. Q1 2017)

If the PS4K does happen to exist, can we have remasters of remastered HD games. For instance a Last of Us Remastered Remastered?

People don't see why others could get upset about this?

After thinking about this some more, this isn't really a stop gap system; it might as well be the ps5. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft calls their new box releasing soon the Xbox two. It's not like three years after these new systems come out we'll have something 8 times more powerful. No, we'll get something that's 2-3 times more powerful than what's coming out this year.

And since the "ps4k" won't be staggeringly weak compared to the "ps5" I can see Sony down porting exclusives to it just like they are about to do for the vanilla ps4. I mean, if this sells well why not

Console generations are typically 10X the performance of the predecessor.

And this will most certainly not be PS5 quality performance.

It'll be in and around 4TF - mid gen change, but not new gen.

Sure, but they are building the strongest box they can for $400-$500. And that's what they'll be doing in three years with the "ps5". Why are they different?

I honestly get the impression that Sony will never again start a generation at anything higher than $399.

It's the perfect price to incite rabid hype.

And I would prefer if PS4K launched at $399, with a CPU with increased clock (at 7 cores) if a substantial upgrade warrants reaching over that $399 line.

The Last of Us Remastered 4K doesn't seem farfetched to me, and maybe The Last of Us Remastered VR too if third person VR games becomes a thing.

Not sure how I feel about this, but it won't really matter because it doesn't sound like Microsoft will do the same thing. That's my gaming platform of choice. Wouldn't be surprised to see a new Xbox then in 2017 get revealed to stay competitive. Microsoft's smartest move would be to drop to $199 with the NX coming out and the PS4.5 whatever you want to call it. This opens up price as the option for Microsoft to stay competitive.

Is not possible to update the first post or title because I missed these updates even though I'm trying to keep up.

He will update it today. He did not want to update it today because could think it´s an April Fools joke.

He basically said that it will be announced earlier than we think and that it will release around the same time the PS4 did.

I think MS is preparing the same thing and people misunderstood Spencer entirely.

If the large power increase somehow made it possible for games like this to be in VR, I would be insanely happy.

True $399 is better for mass market, but I would gladly pay $499 for a much better CPU. They still have the OG PS4 so why does the deluxe model need to hit mass market price right away?

The logical guess is E3, but that seems, too logical, as in earlier than we think implies to me before E3.

I wonder if a Playstation Meeting event would be a bit much for this announce?

If Sony expects some wider spread negative reactions to the announcement they could decide to announce it prior to E3.

Just to get it out of the way and have the reactions to their E3 be super positive.

I mean 1 month or so of negativity would probably disappear with a solid E3 conference.

You seems to be updated. Can you do a summarize for us noobos?

That's what Microsoft believed for the 2013 reveal of the Xbone. :P
(not that I think the situation is the same, of course).

Okok, did he hint at what he would share today?

So, this is Sony want PS4 become the ceiling, from here on all we get is fake sense of upgrade with bell and whistle.
Good for development cost I guess.

Frankly, this approach worked out for Nintendo until they overstepped the mark...

Exactly.

OP will drop new info today.

He already did that yesterday ($499 and 2016 release) and if I understood him correctly he already spilled all the beans he had.

Actually, has Verendus or GopherD chimed in yet?

Seems strange that they've gone quiet.

I understand at least Verendus going quiet - he's probably busy running SIE and all.

Verendus has not shown up.

Gopher had this to say:

Someone running a 970 has significant sacrifices compared to the 980ti. Don't make them look bad, nor the game any less enjoyable.

While I'm still generally against this, I have suddenly thought of something that would potentially bring me around to the idea:

Has anything been rumoured about the boost in power allowing PS3 backwards compatibility?

Because being able to consolidate two consoles into one, that is an upgrade I'd be willing to part with cash for.

Never heard anything like that. Would be silly if you ask me imo. Nintendo needs all the support they can get right now. If a dev says "we have kits" I don't see the problem as that is showing ninty is reaching out to devs to get more support. Software droughts suck so a dev just putting that info out should be a positive.

It seems it's really what's going on, though. We've heard from several sources how Nintendo NDAs are much, much tighter than what happened with Wii U, especially in terms of consequences after leaks, so I'm absolutely positive that there can be such a clause in the NDA contract. This time they're tight as hell.

Also, we already heard about some third parties and schedules, despite the tightness, but still not that much: SE, Namco, EA?, the timing for "public dev kit diffusion" from a third party developer through Trev, UE4 and Unity supported by the machine, an ongoing - at the beginning of the month - beta for a game coming on NX too, etc., I've picked up what we can be mostly sure about.

But this doesn't mean NX will get support from everybody right from the beginning, especially from Western third parties. For example, I wouldn't doubt that what you say about two big mid size publishers not supporting NX can be true as well, despite the ferocious NDAs. Maybe it's Rebellion, given what they said a few weeks ago.

Zoetis will be the new Verendus for now - hopefully he/she comes in and shares more.

And it's probably a good thing Verendus is staying quiet - every post seems like a riddle where you'd need to be on shrooms for 48hrs just to have a clue what he's talking about.

I miss buttocks though - his threads were like an event happening.

Sony won't try to emulate the cell cpu for all the money in the world.

Such a terrible idea and will never happen.

If the large power increase somehow made it possible for games like this to be in VR, I would be insanely happy.

No one wants (or should want) to play a normal shooter like Uncharted in VR. 90% of people would get sick. VR needs exclusive games that follows the special guidelines needed for VR.

If we take it as a certainty that the PS4K will have a new AMD APU (which we should because anything else doesn't make sense), then there is little chance that it will be a Zen-based APU as these are not coming from AMD until 2017. Just to clarify, while Zen APUs are not coming this year, Zen CPUs will be arriving Q4 2016. But these are an irrelevance when it comes to discussing PS4K's internals as they are desktop PC CPUs.

So don't get your hopes up for a Zen APU with Polaris graphics cores. That would offer serious performance but is likely too far off for the new Playstation console.

Agreed. Now all of a sudden we don't want options in a medium we bitch about options, like fucking on the daily.

I find it weird as well. In a world where Digital Foundry threads are full of outrage when framerates aren't locked to 30, people scanning every single piece of media of a game looking for downgrades to be up in arms about, the idea that we're getting a mid generation hardware refresh (which was going to happen anyway), along with a little extra juice to help games perform better is met with vitriol.

I get the concerns but I think they're misplaced. I don't think this will end up being as disruptive as many here are worried it will be. Time will tell though. It's exciting, either way.

$499 = £349

How come US baulking at $499, is that a tax free price? So you actually pay closer to $599? Obviously this assumes that the UK price will be £349. I think £450 will be too expensive in UK, maybe £399 is the sweet spot for the early adopter sales over here.

I imagine there will be a roadmap of games for the PS4's lifetime where that remains the target platform. The PS4K version will have extra bells and whistles on - I guess the most important things everyone needs to now is roughly when does the switchover happen on target platform. Look how late TLoU and Beyond:Two Souls launched in the PS3 lifecycle. In this new 'era' of rolling upgrades would they have been built for the PS4K and then just downgraded whereas they were very heavily optimised for the PS3 previously before being remastered.

I think this is more of a strategy to tie in more customers to their ecosystem/brand. Upgrade your console, get VR etc. and you're even more heavily invested in the Sony brand.

$499 will most likely come in at £429

It's going to be more expensive than PS4's launch price. It's going to be a "premium" product for PS enthusiasts in my view. I think the OG PS4 will continue to outsell it and be the leading platform for a very long time to come and will continue to be well supported as a result.
