Can anyone briefly explain the software compatibility? I just spent about 20 minutes looking through Steam, r/Vive and r/Oculus to see what exists but I'm starting to get fairly concerned by the seemingly split ecosystem. Are there actually going to be titles exclusive to one headset?

I was really looking forward to Adrift, but it appears to be Oculus exclusive. I'm starting to find myself super torn on which preorder to keep.

Adrift is coming to vive on may.

Adrift is a timed exclusive, already confirmed for vive

I expect a lot of other "exclusives" to get vive versions announced in the next month

Also, there will probably be modding done to use oculus games with other headsets.

That's what I'm hoping for. I have no idea how different the two technologies are, but I hope they're similar enough to hack it to have the computer treat the vive like an occulus and have everything work. I'm sure it'll take some amount of emulation and conversion, but hopefully not too much. It's not like video game consoles where you have powerful cpus and gpus to emulate.

Vive is the better hardware, but I'm really worried about software exclusives all going to the more popular Oculus. The real answer is probably to wait until Fall or latter to see how things settle, but waiting is so hard when you've been looking forward to vr so much for so long.

I work full-time and most of my free time is spent developing my own game / playing with my 6 months old

How's the virtual desktop solutions with the vive? Are they any good? Could I be coding with this thing?

I'm trying to convince myself to purchase one, not for gaming purposes but development reasons. Ideally I'd make a game for it too, but for now I'd be more interested in having a huge VR workspace.

Thanks

Adrift is coming to steam very soon, confirmed a couple of days ago.

The games you won't find on Steam are the Oculus funded ones, only available through their store like EVE Valkyrie, Lucky's Tale and other upcoming titles.

Most if not all of the third party games are/are coming to steam (pCars, Ethan Carter, Adrift, etc.).

But just because it's on steam doesn't mean it has Vive support, right?

For instance, Adrift and Subnautica both are already listed as having oculus support on steam, but not vive support.

It isn't so simple to say vive is the better hardware. It has better motion tracking and that seems to be a huge differentiator. But the rift seems to be a better designed headset - smaller, lighter, easier to put on, built in headphones is a big convenience (and they can be removed if you really want to use your own).

I think the ideal system would be the rift with lighthouse tracking, oculus touch controllers and the vive rent facing camera. I expect rift 2 and vive 2 to be much more aligned in terms of comfort, quality and tracking.

The resolution probably isn't high enough for programming to be comfortable on it for most people for long sessions (or anything that involves a lot of text in general).

As we're making wishes, I still hope there will be a Civilization tabletop mode at some point.

I mean, the same game as we have now but the world map is on a virtual, room sized table you can walk around (and through, for obvious reasons) to make your moves.
You could maybe even see the other nation leaders around the same table.

Thanks for the info, leaning towards the Vive ATM. Hopefully Tuesday reviews will seal it for me.

Id be a lot more stoked for adrift if it actually tracked your hands

The games im most excited about are budget cuts, hover junkers, windfall, cloudland minigolf, and space pirate trainer. In other words, games that heavily rely on your ability to aim with your hands.

Hype.

Edit: avatar quotes are getting replaced with vbulletin? Weird. Fixed.

OK, for those that have been charged, what company name is on the transaction? I need to give my bank the heads up not to block it.

Thanks!!

I havent, my payment is still pending

The same for me. I suppose they're timing the delivery for different regions in order for it to arrive on the 5th, but I believe it would need to ship today in order to reach us (San Antonio for me).

Damn, that's a shame... Thanks.

How does the whole "virtual movie theater"-thing feels like ? Is it just a novelty ? Will games run at 60 Hz ?

I'm trying to figure out what I could use it for other than playing the launch titles.

My god....yes!

- the vives are in the Czech Republic.
Really? Interesting. Closer than I expected.

Especially if you are indoors and in a room with electronics. I had my wife hold the vacuum right underneath the drill bit on the holes that I drilled to anchor the murphy bed so that dust didn't get anywhere. It worked perfectly.
That's indoor drilling 101 ;)
But yeah it works well.

Developing more VR games ;)

I'm hoping The Gallery turns out good. Game has been on the down low for a while.

Me too! All the impressions have been good. Something about puzzle/exploration games and VR that gets me super excited...

Right

But Adrift is coming to Vive in May.

Not sure about Subnautica yet

Yep. It's absolutely my type of game but without motion controls I'll probably just play it on TV with a controller if I play it at all (impressions seem to be mixed on it anyway)

AFAIK, e.g. for the UK:
- HTC are trying to ship the product 'for delivery on the 5th'.
- the vives are in the Czech Republic.
- the boxes are being transported by DHL.
- DHL claims UK->Czech is 'next day delivery' (I assume the same in reverse?).
- you won't be charged until they ship.

So, I wouldn't worry at the moment, logically they should ship (to a lot of places) later today or tomorrow - and at that point they should finalize the payment and send the shipping details.

Oh cool if it is 24 hour shipping.

Around the beginning of last week, there were ~80 items tagged with Vive support on Steam.
On Friday, the count reached 100. Right now, it's 117.
I wonder what it will be on release day.

I'm really not worrying about it actually. Most 1st wave will be shipped tomorrow with overnight. We will probably see shipping labels later today or tomorrow morning. My hold showed up Thursday and that's what matters. Usually the debit will be out 3-4 business days after the hold date FYI.

I've been wondering that myself. Been checking the amount of games available every now and again over the last few weeks...and watching them slowly go up.

I figure there's gonna be a few Oculus "exclusives" that are now announced for Vive as well over the coming months.

"You’ve been asking for ADR1FT to support other HMDs, and today Three One Zero and 505 Games are excited to announce that ADR1FT is coming to the HTC Vive in May! If you’ve purchased ADR1FT on Steam already, there’s nothing extra you need to do; We will issue an update to the game that makes the game compatible with Vive. Simply launch the game, put your HMD on, and you’ll be playing in virtual reality! "

My credit card charge has been pending since Thursday. Really hope it posts tomorrow and they send it out. I'm in Chicago only a day shipping away from the main hub in Indiana.

Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm one to two days out, in MD, but otherwise yes, I'm in the same boat.

Use cubes. I hear it's all the rage with the kids these days.

Lol :)

Yeah ! With different colors ! Gradients will be sold as DLC.

Seriously though, you're making me consider it. You're getting one Durante ? If you'll develop something, will you be using Unity ?
