An Extensive Look At Final Fantasy XV's First Chapter

With this month's cover reveal of Final Fantasy XV, we're hoping to explain to fans how the game plays and what exactly you'll be doing in this new world. You've seen a lot of trailers, but in this video feature we wanted to show off the actual gameplay from Final Fantasy XV's opening chapter. While visiting Square-Enix's headquarters in Tokyo, we sat down with the game's director Hajime Tabata to discuss what players will be doing in "Chapter 1" (through a translator provided by Square) and what makes it the most ambitious Final Fantasy yet. We should point out that the gameplay featured in the video interview is from an early version of Final Fantasy XV, and does not represent the state of the shipping game.

Watch the video below to learn from Tabata about how the beginning calls back to Final Fantasy II and why he doesn't want people to think of Final Fantasy XV as an open-world game.

What a shit gaming outlet.

Interesting, mild spoilers re beginning of Ch 1:
they note that after chapter 0, but before you end up pushing the car down the road, you "leave on your journey" and there is some kind of "scene." So leaving Insomnia presumably. Hope we get a chance to meet Regis and Cor at least.

That is honestly the most unflattering footage of the game that I've seen so far. Doesn't look like something that is coming out in six months.

It is not console footage. The UI is consistent with the PC development environment.

I have no doubt that's console footage. It looks terrible.

Man, that looked rough as hell. =x Pre-beta gameplay indeed I guess.

I really wish they give you camera control regarding distance from Noctis because its just too close to him.

These environments are boring as shit. Please show some areas that are artistically interesting.

It's like people forget how boring "fields" look in FF games.

Anyway, interesting hearing Tabata distance the game from the open-world label. I think that's the first time i've heard a developer make an open-world game but try to distance the game from that label.

I'm pretty sure I blew up that resort in Just Cause 2.

Edit: And lol at that gas nozzle, wtf were they thinking showing that?

love it.
especially the part where notcis fills up a car that has no gas port, that's real fantasy right there.

Well shit, on one hand I want to see how it looks graphically, and on the other hand I rather not spoil the first chapter for myself. Why do developers even do this? Just pick a later chapter.

Beginnings of most great games are always special, like Quantum Break and I would have hated it if I had seen that already before playing it myself.

I'm very much looking forward to the game but how many times are they going to use the "not final, pre-beta" excuse for the visuals when it keeps looking worse and worse every time it's shown? I just want them to prove that they're making progress on that front. On a technical level, this doesn't look like a game coming out in six months.

I guess they want something that you'll remember around launch? I dunno.

Not too shabby. I like that they put the story first and open-world second when it comes to design priorities.

I really like the idea of this game. At least from the trailers and gameplays, it really gives me a great vibe of a fun roadtrip adventure.

This do it for you?

The footage from GI is all from the first couple of hours of the game so empty fields, mountains, and level 1 enemies galore.
To be honest when I saw that trailer I thought the cities/urban environments looked interesting (some of them not) while the field and dungeons looked incredibly boring. I thought briefly that the focus on 'realism' might have hurt them a bit in the fields.

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.

As boring as any desert in JRPGs, but you know, every JRPG has to have a desert section.

Well there's also Persona 5
maybe,
. Soundtrack of the year will definitely go between those two oh and Trails of Cold Steel II.

I've played CS2, I'd say you can rule that one out now. Anyway these are just "best OST for JRPG". There are other genres that also have great soundtracks. I always have a feeling that soundtracks in western games are often neglected.

Personally there is 2 things I'm scared of.

- The car looks rigid as hell. Seems to be no suspensions simulation (even no realistic acceleration judging by the Platinum Demo). I really would like the car driving to be more realistic.
Also, I hope to see some car damage (even a little bit). This would maybe add more depth to the car gameplay, and it would be repairable with the help of Cindy. By the way I'm really happy to see this fuel gauge. This fits perfectly with the atmosphere they're trying to create.
EDIT : Okay just saw the video a second time with the HD link, I didn't saw the vehicle damage @ 4:28. Hyppppppeeeee

- Like the car, I think the characters needs some better movements. In fact, why not using dynamic ragdoll ?

That's really the actual problem in the game for me, speaking of gameplay components. Everything tied to controls looks rigid.
Despite this, the environments and this "chillin'" atmosphere we saw in the story trailer are something I always wanted to see in a game.

I've somehow missed this. Those environments are absolutely stunning. I almost feel bad for the army of designers who've busted their asses to make it come to life.

Was there any word of any co-op support? I play almost every game now with the lady, and it'd be a shame to travel that world all alone.

Wait wut. We don't even know when PC version will be released.

It's footage from the development environment, which happens to be on PC. Their development builds always use generic controller buttons for the UI(they've been doing this since the chocobo footage in September).

It's also why Mat Kishimoto was playing with a generic logitech PC gamepad at the Uncovered stage event as opposed to a PS4/Xbox One controller.
