An Extensive Look At Final Fantasy XV's First Chapter

I can't be the only one stupidly excited by the water perfectly reflecting the sky above, right? That's just so cool.

Per-object blur is on here. Not the console version?

Really want to love this game as the exploration and world looks incredible... here's hoping they can sort out the technical woes with this game and improve the combat.

Platinum Demo was probably the most disappointing thing I've played all year.

Yup true, but the demo wasn't a huge looker neither. And according to SE that represented the final graphics.

Not according to the director though, he basically said it was to show off the lighting and weather and that resolution was the priority with the demo. SE really need to sort out their messaging on this front since it's not helping them right now.

We'll see how the final graphics and performance are when it releases, but if it's not a whole lot better than this....this'll be one of the games that really makes me want all the new console rumours to be true.

Oh ok,that's good to know. Good news on that. But the resolution stays like this?

I'm just shocked that a developer that was totally unfamiliar with games on such a huge scale brought us Witcher 3. Crisp, smooth most of the time and overall a really good looking game. But then take FFXV developer and it just looks rather disappointing really. Ok they do have much much better animations, but still. They really are aiming for something the consoles just don't seem to handle all that well.

I shouldn't jump to any conclusions though, let's wait and see how it all turns out.

I couldn't say on resolution. They are targeting 1080p but we're just gonna have to see whether or not they can hit that target closer to release, but they've also said that if they have to, they will lower it to keep the stability up.

I tend to agree though that the issues stem from punching above the systems weight in certain ways. It's a pretty ambitious project and even if that does end up being a bit more than the consoles can bite off, I can't really blame them for trying either. FFXIII suffered from a lack of any ambition IMO so it's refreshing to at least see them give it their all.

I think this is also a more ambitious engine than was shown in the Witcher 3. Look at say the October 2014 footage when it is targetted on a beedy PC. Though rough, that looked better than W3 maxed out on a PC. For me, the scale, lighting and modelling are more impressive than W3, but IQ and performance are not. If it can look like the Uncovered trailers upon release, they I think it is more impressive visually than W3.

The lighting in the Maldives resort at night was stunning. The lighting in general is much more natural compared to Duscae.

I preferred Duscae's lighting. It made it feel otherworldly. Going by the video I think it's too natural now and it loses some of the fantasy feel imo.

Tabata: That's right, it's coming out on the 30th of September, give or take a few days depending on the region.

--"You seem to have a clear end in sight. How are things going?"

Tabata: Let’s just say September 30th... is a date we think we can make. (laughs)

Must be an interesting gauge this game to compared to other current RPGs available.

I mean FFXIII visuals were carefully made in mind with uncontrollable camera angles and having only geometry in places where the player will only see outside of very few locations (such as the Archylte Steppes for example)

Most games with non-free camera and focusing everything on higher detail and the cost of smaller environments.

Now we have a somewhat inverse a large open game but the visuals not being the forefront of priority.

People want that holy grail of both super high detail of game with forced camera but with the large open environments. I wouldn't expect this out of any game this generation, neither The Witcher, Fallout 4, or the upcoming FFXV included.

I at least know what I'm expecting out of this game, so at least I won't be disappointed when I only get what I always expected to receive, and I'm perfectly fine with this.

One thing I noticed about the reflections in the water in the Platinum demo is that they are easily the best mix of screen space reflections and cube maps I've ever seen. Cube map reflections usually aren't very accurate because the devs don't take the time to make sure they match perfectly with where they're being placed and whenever they are mixed with screen space reflections usually it cause a really weird shift in the reflections when moving objects off the screen, but FFXV does it perfectly.
