I don't think that's it. I think we see female character leads get heralded as a great ones even though they are a Mary Sue because we're so starved of good female protagonists that even badly written ones leap to being considered great characters.
And who are these perfect male characters you speak of? I'm struggling to think of any, certainly any that people consider good characters.
Anyway, I don't want to get off topic. Hopefully Rogue One's lead will be better written. I'm just surprised there's resistance to the Mary Sue thing.
James Bond literally does everything right (or his mistakes are used as plot devices) and has the solution to nearly every problem he faces, and tons of men use him as a role model and consider him a powerfully written and good character.
Steve Rogers does almost everything right (or his mistakes are used as plot devices) and has a solution to nearly every problem he faces, very little of it being actively explained, and many men use him as a role model and say he's a well written character.
Nathan Drake does just about everything right (or his mistakes are used as plot devices) and has a solution to almost all of his problems, few of them being explained other than, "Well, he's good!" and the only real criticism you see towards him is about how many people he kills.
I can keep going. Really, I can.
Anyway! I'm hyped as shit for this movie. I'm really glad they didn't end the trailer with ominous breathing. Keep the rumors just that for now!
