So cool.

Looks so bad ass right there. Surprised no one made a .gif of him walking through the water.

Yeah I don't have a list of scenes in front of me or anything, but I seem to recall Ethan Hunt screwing up a bunch in the last two Mission Impossible movies, and the tension (and humor) coming from how he has to cobble together a way to get out of his self imposed jam.

Doesn't he misjudge an "impressive" jump and slam his head into the side of that Burj Dubai window in Ghost Protocol? Not very Mary Sue-ish.

Wait, is someone arguing that Ethan Hunt isn't a goddamn immortal superhuman in every Mission Impossible film? I love Mission Impossible. Have the entire series on Blu-Ray. Ethan Hunt is barely a character, he's more of driven willpower given flesh and is literally described as such in Rogue Nation:

"Hunt is uniquely trained and highly motivated - a specialist without equal - immune to any countermeasures. There is no secret he cannot extract, no security he cannot breach, no person he cannot become. He has most likely anticipated this very conversation and is waiting to strike in whatever direction we move. Sir, Hunt is the living manifestation of destiny - and he has made you his mission."

He is literally a Mary Sue in its original definition, in that he is a complete self-insert for Tom Cruise to look cool and go to interesting places.

Moving on, Rogue One looks boss and I'm feeling Diego Luna as the Kyle Katarn expy. I look forward to hearing more about the cast.

was a little indifferent about the anthology series, and didn't even know this trailer was out until someone mentions it this morning but this looks really, got my hype up a bit... Also love how they've rearranged the music

So the prequels are canon?

That was never in question. Why would you even think they wouldn't be? TFA was Episode 7 after all. 7th film in the saga series.

Back in 2014 Lucasfilm declared that the first 6 Star Wars films and The Clone Wars were the "immovable objects" of the Star Wars canon that all future media must adhere to. That the George Lucas created media is the bedrock of the canon that everything else will be subservient to going forward.

Eh, it's more like they screwed up the power balance between the main hero and the vader stand in for movie 1. Reflects poorly on Kylo and they're going to have to work hard to make him feel menacing in the sequels now that he's essentially already been defeated by them once. That "training" that Darth Snookums promised better be some next level sith cross fit or something.

As a character she's not bad. She's no Kreia, but then, nobody in the OT was either.

I think Kylo Ren is mainly misunderstood, as far as how using/mastering the Force works. He started off under a Light side dogma, under Luke. That side is all about calm and balance and focus. Then he switches to the Dark Side, which focuses on anger and raw emotion and energy. The problem is he's still basically a kid, and the inner turmoil of betraying everything and everyone for power means he still can't really focus one way or the other. So yeah, he may have raw power but he can't direct it one way or another enough to use it. It's reflected in his emotional outbursts when he pops his lightsaber and destroys consoles and crap after getting bad news. He's literally raging with no direction, which really isn't even how Sith are supposed to work. "I know you would. I can feel your anger. It give you focus... makes you stronger." Ren has anger, but no focus. It makes him a terrible Sith and a worse Jedi.

Bad enough for completely untrained Rey to defeat? Apparently so, but I'll put some of that on Rey being a Force savant. Are there some new tricks like the lightsaber calling to her? They're new to canon lore, sure, but not exactly new to Star Wars in general.

I'm sort of rambling and have forgotten where I was going with this.

I don't mind her being over competent, especially with Kylo being this weak. But she just seemed to be completely devoid of personality. She did cool shit, but she felt empty. Kylo, Finn and Poe all had a lot more personality. I hope they expand her, bcause the actress herself is very sympathetic.

And I feel like that's in part due to the way the new trilogy's story is unfolding. Episode 8 will probably give insight into her past that contextualizes how capable she is in Episode 7. I guess people take offence to the term 'Mary Sue', so maybe it's best to just call her a perfect, boring and not all that great character.

Alright, good to know.

They almost brought Hayden back as a force ghost in TFA, so why not? I think long term they are going to try to rehab the PT's reputation. You've got Genevieve O'Reilly as Mon Mothma in this, even if her scenes were deleted in ROTS. You know there will be an Obi-Wan movie or trilogy with Ewan after Episode IX.

In Ghost Protocol almost everything fails which is kind of great. From the mask machine breaking to the damn door on a train not opening.

The gloves failing was funny as fuck because I think it led to Renner deadpanning something while Cruise just yells at him to shut up

Benji's face projecting onto that screen in the hallway scene was one of the funniest things I've seen in an action movie.

Yeah, I'm not saying any of that, I'm saying that they've moved toward him screwing up a lot more and extracting humor and tension from that. Though maybe I'm not as up to speed on the nuances of the term "Mary Sue" as many, which is something I'm kind of proud of to be honest.

So, according to the rumors;

James-Earl Jones will reprise his role as Darth Vader in this movie.
They are trying to bring back Hayden Christensen to be in the suit.
They brought back the actress who played Mon-Mothma in Episode III.

I feel sorry for every single Rebel though. Seeing as how important these plans are to the Empire I'm pretty goddamn sure Vader will be sent to dispatch all of 'em.

Y tho? To make him feel better?

Bringing Hayden back as a force ghost is a bit different to playing Vader though. They don't need his voice or appearance. I'd be surprised if they didn't just use someone of Vader's size. Hayden was always too short IIRC.

Because he's not tall enough.

Doubtful. Why bother making that reference but leaving out completely any reference to the EU story that actually dealt with stealing the Death Star plans?

Not a reference of any real relevance maybe just something only the Star Wars hardcore might catch.

Mary Sue is without question a sexist bullshit label.

Mary Sue is a term that's very old and accusations of it being sexist is something new. The came into force after FA just because Landis made a mess on the internet.

There's nothing sexist about Mary Sue, especially since there's Gary Stu for male side. It's a term that might be used in sexist way, but then it's used wrongly. But the term itself is not. Unless you consider any criticism of female characters to be sexist.

It's just that being overcompetent is nowhere near enough to be Mary Sue/Gary Stu. The whole universe needs to starts bending to showcase how awesome the character. With Ray it did not.

Except that is not the original definition for the term "Mary Sue". A Mary Sue involves doing things way beyond their ability, to save the day (usually for established characters) in some way better than established characters can.

Ethan Hunt is a trained operative whose actions are rarely considered "beyond their ability".

Being a writer insert is not a requirement for a Mary Sue, even if it is a common occurrence.

I honestly didn't think I could ever get excited about non-Jedi/Sith Star Wars stuff, but holy fuck that did it. Wish I could just sleep until the movie is out.
