official translation of Famitsu latest issue

“With the completion of FFXV within your crosshairs, I presume you’re already making plans beyond it?”

Tabata: "Now that we have all the environments and foundations we created for FFXV, I’m really excited to think about what we can use them for next. Building those foundations was grueling work, but those efforts will breathe life into something further down the road. I’m well aware, though, that we need to make a success of FFXV first."

Tabata is Trump, confirmed.

Seems Tabata is very aware of the beating FF's image took during PS3/360 era. Their framing development as a challenge, an attempt to prove that Japan can still compete in modern game development is stirring. Pulling out all the stops and shooting for the moon, come what may. It's the Final Fantasy spirit - no playing it safe.

That's also how they kicked off Uncovered. Having Sakaguchi come out and talk about how he looks at FF like it's his child, and how sometimes you wonder if that child is going down the right path. It's a clear reference to XIII, although obviously without saying it by name.

Yeah, he actually addresses XIII specifically in the interview too, and in quite a nice way I thought. Basically acknowledging that XIII wasn't what it's developers hoped for, but they did the best they could in a very difficult situation. Sort of paints Toriyama as a sacrificial lamb: go forth and take the heat for what is going to be a very bumpy transition into HD development.

I'm pretty sure that scene is the whole 2013 scene which Noctis is in and Tabata hasn't said anything about cutting.

Yeah but Noctis was not present in the specific scene with Luna confronting the Leviathan, the E32013 stuff feels like it would take place after that.

Because great or not, FF's legacy is compelling single player games, and despite what people say about the story in ARR, it really just doesn't match up at all (IMO) with even the weakest single player FF title.

The main story of ARR is terrible and I do agree. But Heavensward's main scenario is awesome. Too bad the genre forces the player in an endless farming and griding race to enjoy it. That's why FF14 will never be among my favorites in the series. It's also aging pretty fast and looks very dated by now already from both gameplay and visual aspects. I can't wait for FFXV to bring some freshness in the series with its open world mechanics and western RPGs inspirations. That's what the series needed the most.

I am hoping Game Informer share the control scheme for FFXV. Like what button are summons on, what is R2 and R1 used for? etc.

I think we might've discussed this before. My main issue is that story basically just happens around you. Being basically a silent protagonist who does errands doesn't feel like an FF-caliber experience.
They changed that in Heavensward and really toward the end of ARR.

I'm not a fan of XIV's story at all and the cutscene engine is janky (well it's an MMO). But somehow I've spent 1000+ hours with it, doing stuff like making apple pies.

not me
My three favorite Final Fantasy stories are Final Fantasy XI, Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Take from that what you will, but different people find different things to love about Final Fantasy.

I don't get the complaint that Noctis and co look like a teenage Japanese emo band, honestly. Probably not the best designs in the world but if you played most FF games, you'd notice that there is a lot worse. It won't take away my enjoyment of the game whatsoever.

You have to visit their homepage and then find the english article to make it work for some reason

Famitsu has blocked referring links, which absolutely blows my mind considering websites are made to generate traffic, lol.

It's like "we have this website, but we don't want you to visit it!"

It should be fine now, they linked it throught their twitter.

Maybe he's referring to the public opinion. Whenever I mention FF to some of my friends that follow the series only casually, they'll usually tell me how awful XIII and OG XIV were.
That's exactly how this should be looked at. When you read the article, they hearken back to the height of FF popularity with FF7 and when Tabata is saying "making it great again", he's referring to how great it is in the overall court of public opinion, and FFXIV hasn't really helped it there since MMOs are a niche market these days. They want to restore the brand to its former glory.

Eh, MMO wise, visually speaking it's still one of the best out there. Only newer games like Black Desert are really beating it. Helps that the art style is top notch.

pretty sure the hollywood guys were hired for kingsglaive and not the game if I read the article correctly
Oh, whoops. I'm dumb.
Jesus this movie is long, I dig it. Plus it's canon and a must see before playing the game and the anime as well.
It is really long for an animated movie. Must have been pricey; hopefully they can make at least most of their money back. I would hate to see a Spirits Within situation sending the Final Fantasy part of the company into a tailspin.
