Critically acclaimed TV shows you don't like?

I don't like much TV I find it really hard to get invested in TV shows anymore they all become to repetitive or fall off...or worse they get cancelled

TV shows I don't like that I know are well received:

Big Bang theory
Breaking Bad

Not for me

My favourite shows were lost, scrubs, friends, the wire, True detective, Fargo, game of thrones (last season wasn't good) I think the era of great TV is done, I hope I'm wrong and I'm willing to take suggestions

Recently watched 11 22 63 and thought it was fantastic

The Walking Dead is another good answer.

It was good for the first couple of seasons. Now it's all over the place. Most random show i have ever seen. Too many uninteresting characters and too much filler also.

I watched the first episode of Breaking Bad on Netflix and didn't get hooked, at all. Well I did like the short "I'm a chemistry teacher, let me show you how it's done !" moment for my inner geek, but the whole drug dealing and crumbling down psyche isn't my thing. Although I realise it's the whole point of the show.
I tried Hannibal too, and it's too sick and depressing for me.

I don't know about Game of Thrones yet, I caught a few random episodes on TV but since I knew nothing of the plot at the time, it's no surprise I was lost. But I read a few summaries of the different seasons already, and it didn't make me feel "I need to watch this !" (yes I know, there are dragons and boobs too)

Generally speaking the shows I appreciate are usually light-hearted though, so it's no suprise I didn't like the examples above.

Oh you mother fucker you. YOU NEED TO WATCH IT PAST THE FIRST GOD DAMN EPISODE WTF. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I used to like The Walking Dead but then I realized nothing ever actually happens and it's the same stuff over and over.

I watched The Walking Dead for 3 seasons before I realised that I hated it. That whole section on the farm was painful to get through, then that guy impersonating Liam Neeson was my breaking point.

I for the same exact reasons dislike Walking Dead. The farm of season three was so drawn out. Plus, at a certain point I felt like the characters should be smarter. Sometimes they put themselves in fuxked-up positions to get caught-up in zombie drama; like they know the outcome of their bullshit decisions.

Mad Men is the strongest example for me. I can recognize it's well written and acted, but I'm a plot guy and it never felt like the show had much plot. It was more like peeking through a keyhole at couple years of lives of specific people in specific time period, which I find incredibly boring, almsot coma-inducting. I've lasted three seasons with it, but just couldn't continue on. It was a complete drag and aside from that womanizing gray haired boss I didn't like any characters.

I agree with this. It's probably the only example for me so far where I don't like a show with lots of critical acclaim.

I watched 3 episodes found it too slow and moved on.

True Detective might be another. I've watched the first episode 3 times since my wife keeps falling asleep, we haven't been able to move to the second episode. I wasn't that crazy about it, I wouldn't say I didn't like it and I would probably end up liking the first season if I ever get a chance to see it.

Also OP has terrible taste.

Is the Walking Dead even critically acclaimed? It's super popular obviously, but is it liked by critics? I saw a Metacritic of 86 which is pretty high, but that was probably mostly season 1. I wonder how critics feel about it today.

Compared to Black Sails, Game of Thrones feels like a Shakespeare production by middle schoolers. Awful acting, pathetic production design (even now with its immense popularity, I guess they're still unwilling to spend too much). Stopped after S3.

could not agree more with this

Black Sails could actually hang with the other HBO period dramas from when they were putting out stuff like Deadwood, Band of Brothers, and Rome

comparitively, Game of Thrones just feels like such a constantly mediocre and joyless slog. could have been an equal to The Wire in terms of depth and complexity, but it just ended up being a huge disappointment

Is The Walking Dead critically acclaimed?

I hope not because the writing is bad. Everything's a mess, character motivations all over the place, people introduced and killed off so quickly you're wondering why even have them in the first place, characters that last for several seasons that get no storyline of their own and are just there, taking up space, just existing, characters turning into idiots to create tension, characters arguing with each other for no good reason just to create drama.

There are a few flashes of brilliance here and there but they are few and far between.

I have to agree with the love of Black Sails. Season 3 was amazing, particularly closer to the end. I don't understand how the show isn't more popular. It has it all.

Game of Thrones
The Wire
Hannibal
Fargo (Season 1 was okay, season 2 was boring as hell couldn't get through it)
House of Cards
Mr Robot
The Americans

Games of Thrones is probably the biggest show that I don't like. I don't think it's a bas show but that setting just never interests me, and yes I have tried to watch it, watched about 5-6 episodes and was completely bored.

Why would you read the summaries of the seasons before watching them? I just don't even understand doing that for any show let alone THE show known for its surprising "events."

Because I wasn't sure I was going to watch them (I was sure I didn't have the time to, anyway) but my colleagues kept talking about it, so I wanted to have a general idea of what it was all about. Not that it spoiled me much actually, I know that many characters die and murder each other, but I already forgot who's who.
It's not like I really care about spoilers anyway, if a story is good and well told you can read/watch it again and again even if you know what is going to happen.

Breaking Bad.

Sorry. Loved the first season or two and while him turning basically twisted and evil is a nice change, it just felt so at odds with who he started out as. He made so many bad decisions where he could've done things differently... I'm sure it's a great tale of how a good man becomes corrupted but it rang frustratingly hollow for me by the end. He was just a douchbag I didn't care for at all.

Mad Men - I don't really have any criticism of the show, it just didn't manage to catch me for whatever reason.

Game of Thrones - I read the first book and half of the second. I was not a fan. I was really not a fan of the TV show.

More of a GAF thing, but it seems that Dead Set is praised every time it's brought up here and I honestly just hated it. Nothing particularly good or interesting about it.

Probably Hannibal. It has its moments, but it tries and fails at creating the nightmare imagery and atmosphere. No real mystery to the characters or plot, and Hannibal himself was boring to watch.

If this thread taught me something, it's that everyone likes Frasier.

Not too many really. Game of Thrones is terrible. I didn't even finish the premiere of season two of The Leftovers.

The Americans is obviously well done, and I'll watch it until the end, but it mostly leaves me cold.

I kinda fell off the Girls bandwagon but I might jump back on. Hearing good things about the current season. I used to love Portlandia but I just stopped watching it and have no real reason why.

"Don't like" or "dislike" might not be the phrase here, but I think Better Call Saul is fantastically shot, well written and acted. I really liked season one. But honestly I've only sat through the first three episodes of the new season, and I don't feel in a rush to really watch it any time soon. Sometimes I think I just want a Mike Ehrmantraut show, which I guess is half of what BCS is.

Is Game of Thrones critically acclaimed still? I stopped watching circa S5. Weighing the desire to jump back aboard.

The only rotting garbage in this thread are your opinions.

Hating on Master Of None, Mr. Robot, Arrested Development, Silicon Valley... I know, opinions and all, but you all are the type of people who think NCIS and its spinoffs are the peak of television.

OP, it's okay to not like a "critically acclaimed" show once in a while.

But with that list, it appears the issue lies more with you than the show, really. Either you don't give shows a chance, or your expectations are astronomical. And I say this only because your list is so diverse that it can't be that you don't enjoy a particular genre or type of style.

I don't think that's necessarily fair. The list is diverse but there are plenty of kinds of shows not represented there. I don't think it's really reasonable to say the issue is with the OP. They're just not for him. It's ok to not like a critically acclaimed show more than once in a while, or ever. Everyone's titled to their own taste in TV, as long as it's not harming anyone.

Daredevil. I watched all of season 1 but found it pretty boring. Jessica Jones was worlds better. I'll probably still give season 2 a shot, though.

I watched the first 2 seasons of The Walking Dead but had to stop because everyone on this show is a dullard who makes terrible decisions and I can't handle it.

There are a lot of shows that I have watched a few episodes of and thought, "this is alright" but other things have taken priority. The Americans, Bob's Burgers, Mr. Robot, The Expanse, and lots more. Stuff is coming out faster than I have time to watch anymore, so I have to be very selective.

Don't like: Hannibal
Everything about this show tells me that I should love it, but I just end up frustrated as hell while watching. I was really expecting it to be structured like The Killing; a well thought out story surrounding a particular crime (at least per season). It sort of follows this structure, but still feels the need to have a "murder of the week" which is just comically stupid. Apparently in this town the most amazing serial killings in American history take place every single week! As soon as I saw the totem pole made of human bodies I shut that shit off and never returned.

Don't understand people not liking:The Sopranos
I don't get it. This show has everything: drama, action, romance, comedy, politics. Not to mention it's expertly made. Aside from a couple tonal issues in the pilot episode, I would regard Sopranos as being a perfect TV show.

Shenanigans: The Walking Dead
The mainstream love for this show is pretty hilarious to me. It's like UFC 6 years ago, when everybody and their grandma was pretending to be an MMA fan. Obviously there are people who are legitimately into it, but c'mon, 99% of the mainstream appeal of this show is some kind of bizarre peer pressure or something.
Plus the show is terrible.

The fact that you boiled The Wire down into just a "cop drama" when its so so much more than that seems to show it went way over your head and why other people absolutely adore the show.

I realize that's more than that, that there's a supposed realness to life on the street, class warfare, corrupt politicians, etc, but I still found all those things incredibly boring.

game of thrones

the walking dead (if that's even considered critically acclaimed at this point)

better call saul (I feel like the perception of this show will come back to earth in retrospect unless they really get their shit together)

No Max! Everyone must conform!

I got half-way through Daredevill S1 (Episode 4-5) and I just couldn't take anymore, it was so dull. A couple friends of mine have told me I've just got to when "it starts getting good" but I hate that sort of excuse for a show.

That's the case with a lot of binge-watching material these days but I can't fault people for not wanting to invest three or four hours or more into something on the hope it might click for you later. Slow burn media is a thing, but when there is more instantly engaging material out there it's a hard case to make. At least with older shows like Star Trek TNG you could basically tell them to skip the so-so first two seasons and they wouldn't miss all that much. With such serialized shows as are in vogue now you either have to slog through the crap or skip ahead and be confused.

For me, I gave up on Breaking Bad with the third episode. Tried giving Girls a few episodes but really not my thing, same with Broad City.

The Wire and Better Call Saul are very very boring. I don't get the appeal. I can't stand shows with a glacial pace. I wish there was a list of them so I knew what to avoid.

I doubt it'll help much, but the murders are actually taking place across multiple states rather than a single town, and seasons 2 & 3 start to move away from the case of the week structure.

Breaking Bad for me as well. I watched the whole first season waiting for it to git gud.

I believe every single fan of Breaking Bad considers Season 1 the weakest season. When I tried to get some friends into BB and they weren't liking the first season, I begged them to continue and they did and eventually they ended up loving it. Stopping in the first season of 7 episodes isn't fair. It isn't fair to yourself because it could turn into one of your favorite shows. Lots of people who love it don't care for the first season. By even Season 3, the show is so drastically different in tone from the first.

Have absolutely no interest whatsoever in:

Breaking Bad
Better Call Saul
Archer (no one will fucking leave me alone about this show)
The Walking Dead
Game of Thrones
Mad Men
House of Cards
The Office (American version)
The Big Bang Theory
How I Met Your Mother
American Dad
The Blacklist
Lost
Arrow
The Flash
Agents of SHIELD (I've watched two seasons and I'm done)
Gotham
Battlestar Galactica
Attack on Titan
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Community (also below)
Full House
Fuller House

I don't even think a few of these shows are anything approaching bad, I just don't care about them at all.

Shows mentioned in here I do want to watch or I do like:

The Wire
The Sopranos
Hannibal
Arrested Development
Modern Family (sometimes)
Fargo
Mr. Robot
The Americans
Penny Dreadful
The Office (British version)
Peep Show
Black Sails
Louie
Portlandia
Bob's Burgers
Master of None
True Detective
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Silicon Valley
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Seinfeld
Community
Daredevil
Jessica Jones

Agreed in many respects. Large swathes of S1 were just not good, but season 3 to the end the show were really fantastic. Lots of others also like season 2 much more than I do, but I wasn't a fan of the GF plot.

The Office

Other shows with this style that I can't name right now

It's not that the shows are inherently bad, I just don't think they're anywhere near as good or funny as their fans do- and they're often a bit irritating.
