Critically acclaimed TV shows you don't like?

Orange is the New Black and House of Cards are straight up terrible after their first 2 seasons.

The fact that they win awards goes to show how low the bar is for media these days.

Mr Robot, the definition of this thread to me. Tried to watch it as much as I could but was only able to struggle through 5 episodes before finally giving up. It wasn't even the fight club of it, it was just how forced and cheesy it all seemed to me. I hated the monologue by the main character over everything, it just seemed lazy.

Almost all of them, if I'm honest. I won't deep dive into this because people can be very defensive about the "golden age" of TV, but the maligned adage of TV being a writer's medium still mostly holds true for me. TV directing is usually a technical grab bag or homogenous and indifferent. There's also a reliance on great acting performances to provide a distinguishing element, which luckily they often do. That's not to say there's nothing of value in these shows, but when something like The Knick stands out to the degree it does, it doesn't speak well of the rest.

If I had more of a general interest in TV I'm sure the flaws wouldn't be as big of a deal, given that I deal with a decent amount of rubbish when watching animation because that's my jam. I like drawings and I like to see them move, so I put up with a lot. Between that and movies, I don't feel the need to like or watch much TV.

I will say that comedies tend to fare better because laughter papers over the cracks, so stuff like Community, 30 Rock and You're The Worst keep my attention, while Fargo, House of Cards and whatever else get axed fast.

It's more that I dont give the shows a chance rather than me not liking them. I watch what I know i'll like, occaisionally experimenting (with success). I guess I didnt really like Curb your Enthusiasm, sadly. I really wanted to like it, too.

I don't think that's necessarily fair. The list is diverse but there are plenty of kinds of shows not represented there. I don't think it's really reasonable to say the issue is with the OP. They're just not for him. It's ok to not like a critically acclaimed show more than once in a while, or ever. Everyone's titled to their own taste in TV, as long as it's not harming anyone.

Of course.

We're also entitled to calling it terrible.

Orange is the new Black is one for me. I give nearly every show at least three episodes to hook me, I gave this one the full first season and still couldn't quite get into it.

I didn't hate it, I just didn't get invested in it to bother continuing watching.

House of Cards is the same way.

The one that I really don't like is probably Girls. It's weird because I do like Lena Dunham, but I haven't really liked anything she's done (Tiny Furniture in the same boat). Cards and Orange I'm just uninterested in, when I tried to watch Girls or when it comes up in a conversation, I kind of roll my eyes.

Do critics actually like Orange is the New Black past the performances? I love the show but it's not for it's writing or anything more than the characters and performances.

I doubt it'll help much, but the murders are actually taking place across multiple states rather than a single town, and seasons 2 & 3 start to move away from the case of the week structure.

I know the crimes weren't literally all in one town, I was just being hyperbolic. The issue is that they were focusing on shocking the audience every week with nonsense, as opposed to focusing on the primary story. However, I did really enjoy the story elements that were there, and if you say they move away from the weekly crimes in later seasons, then I definitely wouldn't mind giving it another shot in the future.

House of Cards. I stopped at season 2. Took me two goes to finish the first season. II just don't care.

Didn't most people, honestly?

I didn't like Better Call Saul. I mean, season 1 was ok, but didn't grab me. I am not watching season 2.

I know The Walking Dead is not exactly a critical darling, but I don't get why it is still so popular. I bailed in S2, which I know is considered a low point, but whenever I skim write ups or read comments on websites I see just as much negative as positive.

I have no problem giving up on a show as soon as it turns out a turd season, so I'm not going to sit there and try to find something to like no matter what critics or Twitter say.

They move away from the week to week murders pretty much near the end of the first season. I'd definitely give it another try.

Modern Family was awful, Jessica Jones was just pretty average, and House of Cards, while good (I enjoyed this last season), might be the most overrated show in the last 5 years. Those are the recent ones that come to mind.

By fan-base acclaimed shows I would say Sons of Anarchy (I know people who claim it is the greatest show on all-time), and Vikings. SoA was never great, but it really turned to shit. Vikings' first couple seasons I've enjoyed, but the last two seasons have been a mess.

I am a Mad Men, The Wire, SFU, Deadwood, Breaking Bad, BSG, Carnivale, The Leftovers, and so on type fan. The only 3 network shows I've watched since 2000 are Lost, 24, and Hannibal. So I can't speak for network TV that much. Only reason I mentioned Modern Family was because I was stupid enough to buy the season 1 DVD.

Past the first and maybe second season do critics even like this show? Season 3 on is pretty much junk, through and through.

Yeah, people need to stop saying House of Cards. Any critics I follow have never really loved it post season 1.

Same with Walking Dead really.

People really need to learn the definition of "critically acclaimed".

For me it's Dexter. Sat through a bunch of episodes and actually hated Michael C Hall. I still have people tell me to this day to go back to it.

I watched through all of The Wire and I still don't know why people are so obsessed with that show. I found it mediocre as hell, but in all fairness, I'm not really into cop dramas.

Any TV shows the critics seem to love, but you don't like? Here's my list:

the americans
broad city
community
arrested development
the good wife
mr robot
daredevil
hannibal
jessica jones
the leftovers
house of cards
silicon valley
orange is the new black
fargo
master of none
louie
portlandia
girls
bob's burgers

Are really the only three in your list I dislike. And really, I only dislike the later seasons of OitNB, I really enjoyed the first season.

I have no taste whatsoever for The Walking Dead or South Park, the latter which seems more critically acclaimed than the former. I even wasn't hugely fond of Breaking Bad, although I still respect it and think its a decent show, it just isn't my cup of tea and I'll probably never go back and rewatch it.

Also Friends. Fuck Friends.

Well yeah, if you don't like the central character of a show that is the primary driving force of said show then I can understand not liking it. I wouldn't tell you to watch it if you hate the main actor's performance because that's just not going to change ever and you'll be seeing it a lot.

Seasons 1 is fine and 4 is the best season while 2 and 3 are a mixed bag and 5 and onward all get progressively worse with one of the worst final seasons I've ever seen.

I'm sure there are others but Seinfeld and Orange Is The New Black stick out for me. I never found anything in Seinfeld funny, aside from random Kramer shit, and every character on Orange Is The New Black annoys the hell out of me.

I don't know man, I bailed on it shortly into season 2 which I think people were still hot on at that point

season 2 is the worst in the series so far imo

Dexter takes the cake for me. Such a fucking dreadful show.

agree but I don't think that show can be considered critically acclaimed. every season after season 1 was mediocre and every season after season 5 was dreadful. also it might have the most agreed upon worst finale of any tv series ever.

For me personally, it takes me getting invested in the the show's "world" before I like it.

Game of Thrones didn't hook me until the second season. It took me 3 tries to like Breaking Bad and now it's one of my favorites. I wasn't really sold on The Leftovers until the second season.

It takes some work but once it kicks in, I'm glad I didn't give up. Currently doing this with The Wire.

Until the end I was just about to say that The Wire would probably be in your wheelhouse. By the end of it I was just sad to no longer be able to see into that "world".

Yea, I totally get the same way at the end of shows too. And in reference to your avatar, I took me a few tries with Rick and Morty to get into it as well. Once I stopped seeing it as a simple cartoon and noticed they built this whole universe of alternate realities and multiple Ricks and what-not, it's become one of my favorite shows ever.

I'm the same. I rarely ever disregard something after viewing/listening/experiencing it once, because so many things that I enjoy now are things that I didn't much care for at first. It's always worth giving something a second chance.

Season 2 is absolutely fantastic as is the end of season 1. Season 3 went too far on the masturbatory side by Fuller et al and it devolved into fan-appeasing nonsense. I'm hyperbolizing here mostly because it was disappointing after the fantastic season 2.

Other than the first season and John Lithgow's performance in whatever season that was I feel like I heard nothing but jokes regarding that show.

agreed on this assesment. Man seems like we might have similar tastes, haha.

It's got to be popular though, because AV Club and similar still put out reviews of the eps, even though The Walking Dead's reviews veer hilariously from "hey this is getting better" to "oh god not this shit again" to "seriously WTF was with this finale". It's like it's causing the writers actual pain to keep going season after season.
