Critically acclaimed TV shows you don't like?

Season 2 is absolutely fantastic as is the end of season 1. Season 3 went too far on the masturbatory side by Fuller et al and it devolved into fan-appeasing nonsense. I'm hyperbolizing here mostly because it was disappointing after the fantastic season 2.

agreed on this assesment. Man seems like we might have similar tastes, haha.

Even more so because I agree with you on season 3. I still end up liking it, but thought they went a little too far with the psychedelic aspects of it. It was great visually, but it got too in the way of the narrative for me sometimes.

How I Met Your Mother is the only one that comes to mind, I watched multiple episodes and I don't even remember cracking a smile let alone laughing.

I tried to get into Arrested Development, but the humor in that show just didn't click with me at all.

Also, the first couple seasons of Family Guy. The show sucked from day 1 IMO.

It takes some work but once it kicks in, I'm glad I didn't give up. Currently doing this with The Wire.

I will say this about the Wire, it was a hard show for me to keep up watching at first and the second season veers off into its own thing from the first which made it more of a slog for me to get through but as soon as season 3 came up and back around, I was from that point onward completely hooked and could not stop watching. I couldn't watch the shows fast enough, I just wanted more of it as quickly as possible.

Fargo. I can't for the life of me understand why this show gets good reviews. The cinematography is great, and the acting is consistently good (in the sense that they do well with what they've been given), but the writing I thought was awful. Solverson? UFOs? Meh.

Game of Thrones. I had zero interest in the show until I gave season 1 a try and got hooked (Intrigue! Drama! Tension!) But then several ridiculously-gruesome-to-the-point-of-hilarity deaths later and a truly ghastly season 5, I no longer give a shit (but will probably still hate-watch for the laughs, I admit.) P.S. Emilia Clarke's can't act.

I don't understand the OP having a Simpsons avatar and not liking Bob's Burgers. The latter is basically a spiritual successor to the former, and I say this as a major, major fan of classic-era Simpsons.

Bob's Burgers isn't nearly as good as the Simpsons were in their prime

Breaking Bad, Criminal Minds, Fargo, Orange is the New Black, The Wire... basically any crime shows. I've seen enough of that shit IRL, and all those seem so fake and over the top. My wife loves them though

i'm more of a genre-specific hater.

i just don't like:
crime dramas
political dramas
sitcoms (at least not any since the early 2000's) EDIT: and by sitcom i mean traditionally shot with live studio and laugh tracks)
super hero stuff (with some exceptions)

what i do like:
broad city
workaholics
family guy + american dad
adventure time
12 monkeys (although i am only half way through the first season)
bobs burgers
childrens hospital
game of thrones
walking dead
kroll show (RIP)
nathan for you
rick and morty
mr show + w/Bob & David
the expanse
the last man on earth
xfiles,etc.
(trying to keep this list restricted to current shows)

gotham, jessica jones, walking dead (getting there), fear the walking dead, mad men (saw the pilot, didn't like it much), sense 8

it's not that i don't like these it's that i think they're overrated.

American Horror Story as well, think it is a terrible, looks someones just thought lets think up the weirdest crap we can and just slap it all together

I don't like Battlestar Galactica. I don't like Mad Men. And while I don't dislike them I also don't think Breaking Bad and The Shield are great.

everything in recent tv except:

Fargo s1
True detective s1
The walking dead s1-3
Luther

That's all I can think of that's good at the moment.

I don't watch a lot of TV, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt seemed right up my alley. I really liked the first four episodes, but then it became a pretty dull sitcom with a finale that completely missed what I still liked about the show overall. I wouldn't call it bad outright, but incredibly disappointing considering how I thought it'd be.

Bob's Burgers isn't nearly as good as the Simpsons were in their prime

Nothing is nearly as good as prime Simpsons, but Bob's is a fantastic show and the best "Simpsons" we've had in almost 20 years.

edit: Unrelated note—I cannot stand people who refuse to watch shows like Archer, Bob's etc. because "they're cartoons". Drives me nuts.

90% of cartoons and comedies.

Ha!

Dexter takes the cake for me. Such a fucking dreadful show.

If you think the latter seasons of Dexter are critically acclaimed I don't know what to tell you. The last season is universally reviled. I've never seen so much agreement about something.

The first season was legit though.

I've watched the first season and part of the second season of Breaking Bad. It feels like the type of show I'd like, but I just don't. I don't dislike it either, I just don't feel strongly about it one way or the other.

Each season and each episode even is better than the last. I liked it in the beginning but the show improves 10x over what it was in the beginning. You should stick with it. I'd be shocked if someone didn't feel strongly about it by the end. That seems impossible to me to not feeling anything when you're watching the Ozymandius episode. Please keep watching. The beginning is nothing like the middle or the end.

Mad Men is the strongest example for me. I can recognize it's well written and acted, but I'm a plot guy and it never felt like the show had much plot. It was more like peeking through a keyhole at couple years of lives of specific people in specific time period, which I find incredibly boring, almsot coma-inducting. I've lasted three seasons with it, but just couldn't continue on. It was a complete drag and aside from that womanizing gray haired boss I didn't like any characters.

This is how I felt in a nutshell.

What do you mean?

The last season (Season 4) was pretty great.

I've watched the first season and part of the second season of Breaking Bad. It feels like the type of show I'd like, but I just don't. I don't dislike it either, I just don't feel strongly about it one way or the other.
Keep watching.

Some of the shows you guys are mentioning aren't really critically acclaimed. They are just popular.

Walking Dead and Dexter aren't that acclaimed at all.

I've watched a few episodes of The Flash while others were watching it. The show is just pure cheese. I don't see why people are so crazy about it. Especially when other shows get criticized for the same cheese that The Flash falls prey to.

What do you mean?

The last season (Season 4) was pretty great.

Keep watching.

LOL ok. To be honest I also dropped the show before the final season, but the last 3 I watched may have been a lucid dream (and not a very good one). Season 6 is specially terrible IMO.

Peaky Blinders is the only tv show this genuinely happened to me with, and I really think its because I watched it without subtitles so it was very hard to understand at times.

Live action comedies/sitcoms are a "genre" I haven't really delved into yet, I've tended to stay away from them because I know my tastes and sitcoms are hard for me to get invested in, I may watch an episode here and there but I won't stick around like an actual fan. I don't bother with procedurals either, Criminal Minds stuff, I'm fine with a show that has procedural elements(Person of Interest, Supernatural) but if there's no serialized stuff in the background I'm generally not interested.

Now going into animation I'd say most slice of life I find incredibly boring, stuff like Hyouka. It won anime of the year on gaf so I forced myself to give it a try and I could barely make it to the 2nd episode, the big budget environments is the only thing I liked. SoL shows focus mostly on the characters which I like but they tend to not do anything interesting with them.

Breaking Bad, I just don't get it. Every character is incredibly annoying and the stuff they pull off in the show is ridiculous.

Breaking Bad

So you're telling me this nerdy chemist dork from Malcolm in the Middle turns into a scary drug kingpin? Yeah, sorry Hal. Suspension of disbelief can only go so far.

Deadwood

Fucking show has the worst fucking writing in the fucking history of fucking time. It's like the guys who made it don't know any fucking words besides fucking fuck.

Carnivale

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....

The Sopranos

Same as Deadwood.

Agents of Shield is critically acclaimed?! This would have been cancelled after 3 episodes had it not had Marvel name attached.. Thanks fanboys. Show is a steaming garbage that feels it was from the 90s.

I don't understand the OP having a Simpsons avatar and not liking Bob's Burgers. The latter is basically a spiritual successor to the former, and I say this as a major, major fan of classic-era Simpsons.
I don't agree, I'm a huge simpsons fan and just don't really like Bob's Burgers, It just never caught on with me.

Agents of Shield is critically acclaimed?! This would have been cancelled after 3 episodes had it not had Marvel name attached.. Thanks fanboys. Show is a steaming garbage that feels it was from the 90s.
It's a good show, maybe not critically acclaimed but for what it is. It's enjoyable.

The Walking Dead. I really liked the first season, but holy cow did I hate 2&3, and then I never continued watching afterwards.

I also think Seinfeld is extremely unfunny.

I really don't like mid-reputable stuff. Just seems like a waste of time and energy. Shows I've watched around this category that weren't very good IMO:

Luther
The Hour
Vikings
Agents of SHIELD
Happy Valley
Every CW Show

I really enjoy pretty much all prestige dramas, highly acclaimed comedies, animated shows, etc
