Batman v Superman Spoiler Thread: Don't believe everything you read, Son

Status
Not open for further replies.
Arguably this movie had that too. Set up was in the opening scene of the movie and the pay off was in the BvS fight.

Execution was not up to snuff. Batman's turn face was too abrupt. The Lois Lane interruption was also super cheesy even though I could see why they would add that in (Lois Lane being the voice of reason because Batman was less likely to believe his foe). Also unlike Batman Begins (where they had multiple scenes with Bruce and his father), they didn't show scenes of Bruce with his mother before she was dead to give us a hint of their relationship.

The scene also didn't relate the whole "Batman is becoming Joe Chill" to the audience that well. They could've had a flash scene where Bruce was posed like Joe Chill and Superman was posed like Bruce with Batman making that realization and then throwing away the spear.

Fair enough.

It really does come down to the execution. The Martha Wayne part is set up, but little else about the pay off wais.

I just said that I could see an argument for it already being overdone as is. The intro is everything one should need to piece it together.

The powerful image you speak of is unnecessary because it's something you should eventually see for yourself through the hints the movie leaves. Giving it away leaves absolutely nothing to the imagination, which is something too many films do these days. As a fan, my mind was already there the moment Bruce heard "Martha." It might require a rewatch for others.

Never underestimate how little focus some viewers give to films. Remember the threads where people seriously asked if the end of TDKR was Alfred dreaming?

Finally saw this yesterday. Agree with all of thr criticisms, film felt like a jumbled mess and, despite its 2.5 hour run time, still felt rushed and overly crowded.

My biggest criticism once again was with the completely uninteresting final fight/action. Once again Superman is involved in one the most boring fights in comic book movies. The Doomsday fight once again involves GCI superpowered beings slamming into each other at high speeds with no real fight choreography and no visible impact or damage to its heroes. Even when Superman 'dies' there was no blood (despite the gaping hole in his chest). The whole fight sequence was just so boring to watch.

I actually can't believe that they had Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and Boomsday on screen at once and still couldn't put together an exciting and well choreographed action setpiece. Not one single 'wow that was cool' moment.

Let's not even get started on the whole Batman vs Superman fight which was over before its started and a complete letdown as well.

I know that complaining about the poor action scenes may seem trivial given the films other gaping flaws but for me it's a big deal. I went into this movie with literally no expectations other than hopefully seeing some cool fights and action. The fact that it couldn't even get that right is pathetic.

Just saw this. I have mixed feelings but I did enjoy the film so it isn't all bad. I liked Batman the most and that is what I was most worried about so I'm actually pretty relieved overall. Really disliked lex luthor. Even if it had been another actor I hated his lines and everything about it. I'm a little disappointed that they tried to make this movie work with doomsday. I feel like he could have had much more impact in a dedicated death of superman film. Overall not a terrible film, but certainly flaws and could have had better writing. I'm hoping that they keep this batman though. I have hope for the DC verse. This film could be remembered badly but still serve as a jumping off point for the franchise

As the title suggests, we begin with Batman. I should quickly note my thought process as the film opened:

Oh this is a nice sequence, although it's very much liked they cross pollinated Burton and Nolan. >> Is that Negan and Maggie? >> Oh the bats are swirling as he's being rescued from the hole. >> Oh god he’s not being rescued, he's literally flying out the hole >> It must be figuratively flying right? >> Oh phew it was a dream.

With this near miss on the cringeometer, we quickly back pedal into Man of Steel with the title card:

"In Metropolis, the world was introduced to The Superman."

The phrase, "The Superman" I absolutely loved for some reason, as did the retread into the Metropolis destruction. Although the Blu Ray release will feature a second title card half way through the movie:

"On the Internet, people are introduced to mild panic and low freshness"

Superman appears (whoop) and the first thing he does is smash a guy through about three concrete walls at 1000mph.

At first I was: "Yeah, you get him Supes, he was about to kill your girlfriend!" Then immediately after I was "Hold on, there isn't a hospital in the world that will put that man back together." Superman probably makes soups out his enemies. Wasn't he supposed to be learning to be better after Man of Steel? He definitely shouldn't still be flicking peanuts through expensive bar mirrors.

Then we learn that Batman's moral compass is essentially so far adrift Chris Hemsworth is using it in-between snacking on his shipmates.

BUT WAIT! Batman and Superman are being manipulated. Yes, it's False Flag the movie. Lex Luthorz son is bored waiting for lady lawyers to accept friend requests and is now straight up murdering senators and essentially trying to set the world on fire. He also likes pick and mix sweets, and space bells.

Just remember, this is what happens when you get cocky and don't put the correct names on the Masthead. People need credit, especially people who can catch rockets off Russian launch pads and do a cheeky clean and jerk while they are at it.

We continue like this for a while. Superman just needs a thank you card, Batman’s angry at his construction bills. I mean he must be angry at the construction bills right? It can't be the loss of life, he just machine gunned 3 whole cars full of people. Some of those people were just trying to make ends meet with a bit of night driving work. Two jobs help with the debt and I'm good behind the wheel. Now I've got to deal with this monster truck tire rolling over my pedal legs.

For the rest, Lex Luthorz is in Tech, he definitely doesn't pay overtime. This whole rock delivery business is a mess.

Interspersed with all this are more dream sequences. I guess I'm not a massive comics fan. Because at one point, my brain asked the question:

“Why is there a 13th Century Mongol Warrior shouting through a hole in the wall?” I get it, everyone likes a bit of Aerosmith and RunDMC, but some things should never be mixed.

Batman is also a clairvoyant, which of course means he will either eventually get his heart punched out, or be killed by the demon monster corpse of his mother while taking time out in the garden.

Bruce, exactly why has your house burned down. Is this a sequel?

Supes also visits his dead dad on top of a mountain. There is a weird twisty metal thing up there. This could have been the Fortress of Solitude, for ants. Take special note. This is not a dream sequence.

Finally we are at the fight, it's good. Lots of punches, some kicks and a little light roughhousing. No rear naked chokes though. Don't ever take Superman to the ground, he definitely will not tap out and he doesn’t need oxygen. He needs the sun though. Which is good for Bats, so using prep time he picks a film that takes place in perpetual night.

He then proceeds to fart gas Superman into submission.

Tactical fans take note. He does this after he uses banks of miniguns on Supes. So he doesn't really want to kill him, he just wants to punch his face a lot. Leading to the inspired sequence of Batman punching Superman in the face repeatedly as Supes face gets stronger. It is Batman's absolute worst fear.

Just when you thought everything had been used in this movie, Batman literally grabs a kitchen sink and starts doing some dirty work, and I don’t mean the dishes. Supes is done, and all that's left is to finish him off Jesus style. Is there really any other way?

But Superman has one last trick in his alien playbook...Bromance.

That's right; it's the end of Robot Jox all over again. We share mothers namesees and have beaten each other into a strong friendship, and in being friends, we can kill a whole lot more people.

Bats, ever the planning and budgetary side of the relationship, quickly divvies up the roles:
I'll kill at least 15-20 more people, you get busy destroying as much property as you can in the next 15 minutes. God I love property, but there is a giant Kinder Surprise with a cave troll inside waiting to hatch and it's eventually going to turn into a de-shelled ninja turtle. We must do what we must.

Wonder Woman! Don’t forget kids. She is in the movie too.

It was in the trailers. you know, the ones where Batman does jokes. Except this time, there's a reason for his Batman voice, also he doesn’t do the jokes to himself, while he's by himself, in his Batman voice.

Wonder Woman has been receiving spam mail, quite a lot of it. At one point in the movie, she even gets sent the entire work in progress rushes of Warner Bros upcoming trailers.

There's one where they have to rescue Jason Momoa from an underwater shoot because he can't hold his breath any longer. He waves the trident about in a desperate attempt to keep going, but his eyes tell a different story.

There's one where somebody is strong up on a giant version of one of those electrical board hobby kits. The project is not going well; small scale soldering is a bitch when you haven't got the correct tip on your soldering iron. Whatever you do, don't knock over our last family project, the expensive large format Rubik’s cube...

There's even one where Ezra Miller goes to buy milk. This is all they had for the Flash, Ezra Miller buying milk. The milk goes sour though, as Ezra gets electrified by the fridge. Health and safety people, this is like The Crow all over again. Gustin you’re up.

But the absolute best one is the Wonder Woman trailer. There's no "In a world..." or anything. It's just an old picture of Captain Kirk and Wonder Woman at a World War one Re-enactment. The camera just slowly pans down the picture and exciting sassy music plays. That’s it. Fun fact, this is the second time this exact trailer gets shown in the movie!

So Wonder Woman 2017, lots of slow pans and Kirk. Slow pans and Kirk. And relax.

Wait a minute, was the Mongol Warrior Flash? I thought he was a runner not a fighter.

Oh well it's the final fight. Superman and Raphael get nuked. In space. Superman gets zombified and Raphael levels up.

My absolute favourite bit from The Dark Knight Returns, butchered for pacing. Here's how you do it in this context: Superman drops from space on the other side of the planet, where it's day time but stormy. Places his hand on a sunflower, rousing Man of Steal track plays. Sun comes out. Levels back up.
Instead we somehow get a sunrise scene in the dark, and we are back to the grime.

Batman has reached the end of his character arc. He started the movie hating property destruction, now he willingly leads Raphael back to the property. Because he needs a spear. He figures this out while flying his supersonic jet.

Lois Lane has reached the end of her character arc. She has learned not to throw spears in the deep water. “You do that Lois and you’ll only have to go back in and fetch it!”

Wonder Woman has reached the end of her character arc. It only has one part. Seeking the truth! So she tries to get Raphael to tell the truth. That and don’t leave your baggage on the plane, because lord knows, we don’t need any more fear of terrorism in this movie.

Superman keeps punching Raphael, Wonder Woman keeps chopping bits off Raphael. Batman keeps the fuck out the way. He only kills people, with minimal risk.

BUT WAIT. Batman has a can of fart gas left. Raphael is weakened. Superman has got the spear; he shoots he scores but Oh Oh! The trope of self-sacrifice has him. He's been trying to do the right thing for two movies now, so he thinks "To hell with it, I'm jus' gonna stab this ninja turtle"

Then we are at Supe's funeral. A funeral so big they buried him twice. Hold on, is he Amish? Supe's is buried in a shiny comic reference and we get to Batman’s final speech. He's sorry about all those people he killed. Now he will kill less, or possibly only smash them through 3 brick walls at 1000mph, in Superman’s honour.

It's a tough sell, but we are heading for a sequel. Lex Luthorz son is in full on Britney Spears Umbrella mode, and he's rung the hell out of that space bell. They tried to stop him, but nothing stops off screen Britney bitch. Someone is coming, quick hint, it's that grey dude on the painting. That or the Cloverfield monster. Or Tim Burton.

All in all Five Stars.

Bruce, exactly why has your house burned down. Is this a sequel?

They seemed to have treated Batman Begins as canon, with the Joker being implied as dead (but left a smeared suit), and presumably most of batsie's other rogues either in Arkham or equally dead. ( I'm strangely reminded of a fanfic I wrote last year, but that was derived from Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, where the character is also dead -yet somehow back. As are, by that point, most of the other rogues)

I get the feeling we were supposed to pick up on this Batman being more like the original conception and less 'no kill rule', but nobody did that, obviously. Why would you assume that if there was no previous setup for it?

Speaking of setups, that Martha thing was atrocious, but so was the use of 'farm' as an equal image system. "I grew up on a farm", yes we get it! Supes grew up on a fucking farm. Snyder didn't even bother actually SHOWING that, instead telling it constantly.
It's like Mark Kermode brought up in his review of Suckerpunch: Snyder doesn't understand anything below the costume. It's all costumes.

The babbling on 'god' as a literal object rather than allegory also got on my nerves. I felt there were two or scripts in this movie all trying to surface, but none actually piercing through. The 'god' stuff is a different script from the "rage" stuff, which was probably how at least one writer thought this should play out: Batman blinded by rage, which would fit his character and would naturally set up the 'versus' part of the title. That would have worked. But then the 'god' crap is shoved in along with 'Martha on a farm' and take all the focus away, while adding nothing of value. As a discussion, early on in the movie, sure. But as a literal plot? noooooo. It was really pushy on it to the point of contempt too.

Just got out of seeing this first time with the gf.
I feel like my senses were assaulted. Gf as well kept asking wtf was going on throughout the movie, I could only explain because I've spoiled the movie for myself through Gaf, YT etc, otherwise I'd be lost.

I'm sorry but even affleck couldn't save this steaming pile of shite Snyder pumped out. The introduction of meta humans, Flash in particular was laughable.

Surprised people in my packed theatre really loved it but I thought the movie was all over the place plot wise. Lex is a buffooon, superman is still boring and lois is a grade a genius considering she randomly knew where bvs was happening and magically knew where krypto spear was lmao.

Jesus, this is def a step above MoS but that's hardly a bar to clear. Hopes now fully rest on suicide squad as at least that looks fun.

Where are you? Just curious considering the packed theater.

Also thanks Snyder for making Batman kill fools.

Wtf was he thinking there?
That's breaking bats rulez 101.

oh there was a reason why Bats was killing, Zack just didnt care to go into it(Robin's death)

its pretty much the broad brush problem with the movie. Its almost not amovie, more like a long ass preview of other movies coming soon. BvS didnt bother to explain anything, and there was soooooo much going on, so we're left with a bunch of floating characters in which we are left to guess what up with.

I dunno how people who dont know anything about DC comics understood half of this film, even if they remembered to Chris Reeves films, they sure would be left mind fucked by what BvS called Lex Luther.

I always feared the movie was going to be bloated, and my fears were confirmed

I saw the film again recently and was amazed to realise that the Batman/Luthor scene was cut into the MIDDLE of Clark's funeral.

  1. Poignant music plays as the horse carriage takes away his coffin through the fields
  2. BATMAN WTF. LIGHTS FLICKERING. OH SHIT, WHAT DID LUTHOR MEAN? WHO'S COMING?
  3. Sad music continues as we see Lois sat next to the coffin.

Somewhere in Southern Africa.
Usually our cinemas here are filled on weekends but for a Thursday the place was crowded.
Cool. Glad people enjoyed it.

My crowd was reserved. Whispers at the end. Only thing I heard clearly was some older guy say "well... It was better than those Marvel movies." I shit you not.

The Meta-Humans trailer was cut in between the buildup of the BvS fight and the fight itself.

It just deflated all the tension for me. The editing feels like the movie is actively plotting against you engaging with any one thing at any time.

Have Synder films suffered from editing issues in the past? Scene for scene, this movie is brilliant. But there is something about the pace of it that made it obvious very early on that the editing was odd.

I think the flashback scenes from MoS had a similar issue. They just came out of nowhere.

Exactly dude. It was painful the amount of times my gf asked who the fuck ww, aqua man and flash were (the dream bit with flash being a particular highlight lol).

All meant to be fan service but I dunno if this all jived with casuals. It's an incoherent messs all to serve the justice league being a thing in the next couple movies.

Watchmen had better editing than this especially in the Director's Cut. Scenes are allowed to breath and the transitions make sense. They also do the arcs in longer stretches than just globe trotting all around like BvS does.

But Snyder movies have had shoddy scene editing in general. Man of Steel tries to do the Nolan present tense with origin flashbacks but it's not as effective but there's less thematic relevance in the transitions unlike in Batman Begins.

This movie has probably the worst editing I have seen in a blockbuster movie in quite a while. I can think of at least 10 different editing examples in this movie that made me go "wow really?" I can only hope the Ultimate edition fixes this issue as much as it possibly can.

Hard to argue there. They literally cut 30 minutes out of a completed film though, kinda last minute.

I need that ultimate cut right now.

I don't think adding 30 minutes is going to change some of these editing issues.

Like the example given where you go from the funeral scene, to the Batman + Luthor scene and then back to the funeral scene. You can' t fix that by adding a couple of minutes to it... you have to fix it by rearranging the scenes.

And this is at its worst in the first 2 acts (after the Metropolis destruction scene).

What you really need are fans who know what they are doing to properly edit the movie in a decent order and trim the JL fat out after the Ultimate edition releases.

For me it was people lapping up and laughing at Eisenberg's portrayal of Lex (in a good way)

Surreal.
I was thinking to myself that people are easily pleased but tbf that can happen here :/

I don't quite remember the funeral going down that way, i'd have to see it again. There was the monument gathering, Superman's funeral, and Clark's funeral. The cut to Lex between one of those 3 didn't bother me, while there were others that did.

30 minutes of content and connective tissue could make more sense of the bizarre editing. Take any movie, strip about a fifth of it's content throughout, and things could get messy real fast.

Who the fuck was Lex talking about at the end in the prison cell btw?

Shit went over my head.

Hopefully Lex Luthor beefs up in prison for Justice League.

No thanks. Give him a macbook and have him work on that world's facebook so he can fuck off. My major gripe with that movie.

Saw this for the first time earlier today in IMAX 3D. Granted, it was a Noon matinee but I think there were maybe 10 people in the theater. For comparison, I saw The Force Awakens at about the same time after it's opening day at the same theater at an even earlier weekday morning showing and it was just about packed.

Anyway, the movie was all right, certainly not as rotten as some people have made it out to be. But I think I liked it even less than Man of Steel, which I sort of like. The more I think of BvS, the more mixed I feel about it. Its the problem I have with most post 300 Zack Snyder movies where I feel like he can do individual scenes just fine but the ability to edit and weave all of the scenes together into a cohesive and engaging narrative just isn't really there.

I just felt like they came at this movie backwards or something. Like, Snyder or whoever is in charge had the idea of having Batman and Superman fight and then they tried to make a movie around that working backwards. And then about half way through that process they decided they needed to introduce all the Justice League characters, so they tossed in that Knightmare sequence and the Flash out of nowhere and tacked in some extra Wonder Woman and Doomsday.

None of that stuff was bad by itself but too often it just felt like I was watching a stream of clips from the movie and there just wasn't anything terribly intriguing to tie it all together. The Metropolis scene to start was great, Batman's intro with the human trafficker was great, the action scenes at the end were great but everything else was kind of a muddled, boring mess. I don't know if its entirely on Snyder but I feel like the characters are just kind of written real boring too. I don't need them cracking jokes or even be lighter like a Marvel movie but something about the dialogue and the writing felt really sterile.

I enjoyed the movie overall and it certainly wasn't a trainwreck like so many people have said, but it could have been a lot better if they had a director that could craft an interesting story and not just something that felt like a 2 hour 30 minute setup for Justice League.

And Jesse Eisenberg's Lex was terrible. I get what they were going for but he seemed too manic like the Joker or something. I wish they had a more mature Lex, somebody like Bryan Cranston would have been so much better, assuming they wrote him a bit differently too, I guess.

People I went with last time all really enjoyed Eisenberg and how neurotic he was.

To be fair none of them were too familiar with DC, let alone with the character of Lex Luthor.

And I admit I enjoyed it more the second time around as well. Movie holds up way better in a second viewing overall, I was kinda iffy after the first but I really enjoyed it the second time.

Finally saw this today and liked it.

I'm on page 4 of this thread and the fake spoilers are killing me. hahahhaaaa.

back to reading....

Liked the movie. The pacing in the first half of the film is sooo slow, if they cleaned that up it would be a much more enjoyable movie. Overall, the action scenes were amazing and I liked the portrayals of superman and batman.

This movie was alright, it had the pieces to be great but not the delivery and especially not the editing style. I'd like to see the extended cut though. I am curious why the backlash was so severe.

Wow you summarized my thoughts perfectly. I saw the movie for the first time last night. It has me more intrigued by the DCU even if this film felt like it was on fast forward cramming tons of important information and iconic scenes all into one film while also spending a good chunk of that time on dream sequences and things that don't progress the plot. Don't get me wrong I liked some of the hallucination/dream sequences but there were too many and for awhile this film felt a little lost.

I think part of the problem is Snyder's vision for the DCU uses plots that are much further out from the typical Batman and Superman stories that we've seen in movies so he essentially fast forwarded through most of it. For example everybody knows Lois and Clark are meant to be together and will get married. However MoS and BvS has the audience already assume that but never really shows us how they got there or why they feel that way. I felt no emotion when Lois found the engagement ring as I felt there was no build up in their relationship. I felt most of this movie was just skipped through all of the build up just to show off the iconic scenes and setup for future films.

Also Eisenberg's Lex was the only one that really bothered me and I disliked. As you said his neurotic behavior did encroach on Joker behavior and I didn't like this interpretation. Especially when he got social anxiety in the middle of his speech. I was hoping in this film for some horrific kryptonite experiment explosion with him going bald and losing the neurotic behavior.

Saw it yesterday, yeah not as bad as some made it (i enter movies always with 0 expecations). A bunch of details bothered me while watching but i forgot most of them.
I've read it here already but yeah, that Wonder woman music that kicked in at the Doomsday fight ... i had to laugh. Felt really bad. I get what they tried to do (Amazon theme) but it just didn't fit and sounded ridiculous. Friend who was watching with me said the same.

- Gadot fits perfectly.
- I can except Luthor. Was different. Maybe not the best cast.
- I like Cavil but he seemed to have only one facial expression as Superman.
- Still baffels my mind why they did show Doomsday/Zod in the trailer instead of keeping this as "suprise".
- a bit much "world building" shoved into this but i get that they want to get their "universe" rolling
- that said: I still can't believe they want to make an Aquaman movie... don't know DC heroes as good as Marvel but don't they have better heros instead of Aquaman? Don't have an opinion on Cyborg but i'm not really excited for him (compared to BP), Flash should be good though.

Still other things on my mind about this but i have to wait for the BluRay to form a better opinion. Have to read this thread from first page to see what i have missed.

Bottom line: Sups is OP. Nerf him.

That was the best part of the movie for me and "is she with you" is easily the best track on the soundtrack.

Q: did we see batfleck building mega suit during hurr durr training montage?

I definitely would watch it again (with copious amounts of whiskey) I just ain't paying for it.
Would watch once its on Netflix or something.

It deserves a second viewing because there are some nice bits in there.

I thought that's what Alfred was doing with the big laser.
Kind of dumb that just the two of them could be able to build it but whatever :-/

That would've been a good idea, wouldn't it? So no, it wasn't in the movie. What you saw of it in trailers is as much as we know about it in the movie.

One thing that bothered me (one of many) was why superman used all that extra energy to push the spear clean through doomsday?
Surely its doing more damage when the kryptonite is stuck inside the centre of his chest.

Maybe it will grow on me with the next watchthrough and i can see how it could fit/be awesome for some people but it rubbed me wrong.

Because you're conditioned for generic superhero themes, and WW is so batshit insane it's jarring. But that's good. She, like her theme, kicks this film in the ass and drags it into awesome at points.

Forget about building it, i just wanted a proper suit up scene. Instead there's a sudden cut to a wide shot of Batman standing in a big empty room, fully suited up. Maybe in the ultimate cut.

I've read it here already but yeah, that Wonder woman music that kicked in at the Doomsday fight ... i had to laugh. Felt really bad. I get what they tried to do (Amazon theme) but it just didn't fit and sounded ridiculous. Friend who was watching with me said the same.

Agreed, I'm honestly in disbelief that anyone could find it anything but laughable. The soundtrack was really obnoxious at times, really trying too hard to convince you what you're seeing is more epic then it really is, another notable example is the laptop scene in its entirety.
