NY mayor De Blasio makes racist joke, Hillary responds, someone annoyed

Yeaah.... calling this "her" fuckup is stretch armstrong levels of reaching IMO. He looks stupid, she tried to save it. But thats about all.

She didn't "try to save it". The entire joke was "he makes a reference to something that could be interpreted as racist while there's a black guy on stage, but Clinton clarified, oh, it wasn't what you thought!" There's no off-the-cuff, that was obviously the planned joke from watching it. The delivery couldn't be more stilted.

Which means she was ok with doing it. They thought it would be funny.

A few things. It's clear from the video that the entire thing was scripted, including the clarification that he was referring to cautious politician time.

Second, as a colored person, I'd like to say that the use of the term colored people time is not offensive. If we are to be completely accurate, the term comes from being a part of any number of cultures that are not time-oriented, but the term has not been offensive in any context I've seen it used.

So let's calm down the outrage here.

I've only ever heard black people say CP time. I always say Latino time or Hispanic time since I am always late. Many cultures joke about being late to things I guess.

Lol at people seriously thinking Hilary would have ever endorsed that now. Also, I've heard the term from family and friends on numerous occasions. It kind of rubs me the wrong way though

the other dude fucked up the timing, bad cadence

it's been used as a gag in countless tv shows, there's probably a wiki for it

...Seriously? The idea of "CP time" has negative connotations. It's not like he's catching fire because he enjoys famous black rap artists or what have you.

how you extrapolated to that re: never invoking black culture ever is strange

Eh, not so much. I'm black and my family has used it all the time for humor growing up. I've actually never actually heard a non-colored person say it. It's basically an in-joke for minorities. The fact that so many people here have never heard of it shows they don't understand it.

Oh ok.

Comedic genius mi abuela spontaneously came up with her "save" and they weren't redoing a poorly acted out bit.

You ever notice how comedians always have funny misunderstandings with talk show hosts on late night? Purely spontaneous stuff.

Also, wrestling is real.

negative connotations? its always been played up as a joke.

A joke can still have negative connotations though. Ultimately, the point is that it's okay to think that certain things are "off limits" to some people.

And a pox on the house of the writer who didn't know that the only way this joke works in that context is if you lead with "concerned politician time" and let the audience catch up to what you just did.

Wow, politicians are really bad actors if this is true

Wait people have never heard of the term black time? Hell you can extend that to most any minority for that matter when they call it "___ time". It usually means you're late af. Heard that shit in a joke more than a couple of times.

I'm white, but I have a bunch of Indian friends who often invoke "Indian standard time" when they're running late.

I use it for myself too when I'm around them, for the laughs. No one cares.

I know it's a very different situation, but I just can't find it in me to be at all upset by this.

Why is she catching heat?
Because he's endorsing her? And she hasn't rejected his endorsement following this?

That's a pretty misleading title.

De Blasio makes a racist joke and Hilary tries to save him is much more accurate
Read the above.

Also I wonder what the responses would be if it were a Republican or Independent making the joke, but everything else were the same. Cool beans?

Not that you are wrong but you do realize that De Blasio is married to a black woman and that his kids are basically "black" as well? It's understandable for him to have some screw ups at times. As someone else hilariously said, "he forgot he wasn't at home."

Oh, I know...I'm just still of the mind that black culture isn't for him to publically wield for casual standup-style jokes at political functions. "My wife's black" doesn't enable that like some sort of black joke pass, lol.

Save it for the crib, not the campaign trail where people are legit just waiting for stuff like this.

Wtf was that? Am not even sure Clinton knew it was coming or maybe they didn't expect the reaction?

Black man on stage (let's ignore he's in panto) so you make a race joke. What the fuck.

Never heard of CP time but I remember my high school teacher always telling us to show up early to things because "we ran on BP time."

She was black

I wonder how this compares to Dominican Time. Show up 2 hours late, say we're leaving then actually leave 4 hours later.

what in the world....

So I guess this is gonna be like one of those black face threads where no one gets the racism.

why can't he invoke any part of black culture ever, when did this become a thing

Because it's an inherently insulting term. It's fine for black etc people to use it because their part of the same race (By that I mean questionably, I've never heard a variation of that term used positively it's more of a self mocking sort of thing). When used by another race it's no longer self mocking and simply straight up mocking.

De Blasio's been desperate to make himself an asset to the Hillary campaign so when he finally gets his chance he does a racist fake out joke? What an idiot.

Y'all going kind of far calling the joke racist. Conservatives have attacked him for being late to stuff in NYC and have made direct calls to it being CP Time because of his family...

I'm just bashing them both for failing at politics.

everything can have negative connotations, intentionality matters most in comedy. you don't know what's off limits until you hit the line and step over.

Would any politician seriously say this and imply "black time?" Like, how could they be so out of touch... And no aid is like "vest not to say that mayor..." I've heard people say "black time" before, mostly black people joking about themselves (and my white as hell 70 year old aunt who thinks she's hip because her black friends say it), though I've never heard CP Time...

But like what legit politician actually thinks that's okay to say these days? Could he have really meant "cautious politician time" ??

You really think this joke is bad enough to warrant a rejection of an endorsement?

I mean, it was a lame joke, but it wasn't racist. It was a lame comedy bit that would have landed if either Hillary or DeBlasio had any comedic timing.

I think that a more cautious person would have probably avoided making the joke. Even if we operate on the idea that the joke isn't really that offensive and that people are overreacting, de Blasio (and Hillary if she knew about it) should prioritize good PR over taking a chance that a joke from a white guy about black culture would go over well.

I wasn't aware that "CPT" was a racist joke so much as it's a joke that black people really only make about other black people, if there's a difference.

I've heard (and made) the joke thousands of times at this point in my life, but I've never heard it come from someone who wasn't black.

Still, for that reason alone he should have avoided it, but if he's married to a black woman I can see how he might have heard the joke and thought it was harmless. On a scale of 1 to "Offensive", CPT probably ranks at a 3 when it comes to jokes black people tell amongst ourselves.

Are you black?

CP or "black people time" has never had negative connotations associated with it. This isn't the n-word which has used as a racially oppressive terms for centuries that we co-opted for ourselves. CP time is an in-joke minorities came up with by ourselves, it's always been used as a harmless joke not to tear people down.

Ever heard of BMW (Black Man's Wheels) or DWB (Driving While Black)? N**itis? Same sort of deal.

It's not something white people should be saying but honestly it's not something white people should even know about to be able joke about it. That's why I find this situation funny as hell, the only reason De Blasio knows that shit is because of his family and he forgot his ass wasn't at home when he made the joke.
