The idea for the bit (it's a bit, it's not off-the-cuff for anyone) is that it's self-deprecating humor targeting De Blasio's personal history, with Leslie Odom Jr recognizing that it's a fucked-up thing to say and Hillary (likely genuinely) not catching the reference.

The thing is, who greenlit the brilliant idea of participating in racially-focused wordplay in the middle of a Democratic primary? It's fucked up, and I don't blame Bernie folks for opportunistically harping on it. Hillary's own-goals are always worse than others' attacks, it's maddening.

I think that a more cautious person would have probably avoided making the joke. Even if we operate on the idea that the joke isn't really that offensive and that people are overreacting, de Blasio (and Hillary if she knew about it) should prioritize good PR over taking a chance that a joke from a white guy about black culture would go over well.

that's fair, although i'm not big on this optics stuff

everyone is dancing around eggshells, waiting for the next political snafu ...

How did no one say "Yo...that's not gonna fly well. It's not even funny."

Don't Blasio and Hillary have people for this?

If candidates rejected supporters who said stupid shit Bernie wouldn't have any supporters left.

Gotta bring up Bernie for no reason.

Can't possibly talk about how this reflect on Hillary alone right?

I wasn't aware that "CPT" was a racist joke so much as it's a joke that black people really only make about other black people, if there's a difference.

As weird as it is that so many folks here have never heard it, even weirder is the number of black posters who don't seem aware that CPT is used by whites to reference late black employees, and they don't mean it as a compliment.

Yep

The people in that audience weren't gasping for nothing

Did not know that. Learn something new each day.

First time I've ever heard "CP" before. Must be an east coast thing because southern people aren't going to tip-toe around a racial slur. They'll just say it.

Never heard of Colored People time. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, since Cautious Politician Time makes more sense in the context.

East coast here, never heard of it

Yeah, exactly.

I've got no idea why they thought this was a smart move.

Typical Hillary. I wouldn't be surprised if she had put Blasio up to this just so she can come out looking like the hero. Everything she does is calculated.

"Cautious Politician Time" doesn't even make sense as a rehearsed line. A cautious person wouldn't be late, they would be on time because they were cautious enough to budget in unexpected delays. Even ignoring the potential insult here, the joke just doesn't make sense. Boooo!

Well, this is a teaching moment for me because I've never heard it used this way, and I'm 30 years old this year, and from one of the blackest neighborhoods in the country. I mean, thinking about it, obviously it makes sense that a joke like this has to have a shady origin, but I have only EVER heard other black people tell CPT jokes.

I blame BET Comedy Jam.

This. So bizarre she thought this was a good idea... the fact that it was so obviously scripted makes the whole thing come off slimey.

Nah, it makes sense it just isn't good. A "cautious" person would be late because they would not "show up," in the given context unless everything was perfect.

Never heard of "CP" or "colored people time" but that's beside the point. What a stupid thing to do.

Democratic nominees are running against a handful of clowns and all they have to do is not say or do stupid things, yet both of them are slipping into shenanigans for no good reason.

Please stop making me hate my own party, kthx

Not really stressing it either way but it's still pretty entertaining to watch the whole scene unfold as the joke lands flat and the dude calls De Blasio out immediately. Ends up being this awkward, cornball moment.

It makes sense to me. He was cautious of whether or not to endorse Hillary, I assume in light of the email scandal.

I honestly did not know this.

Yeah It is used right along with things like; nigger-rich, nigger-rigged, etc.
This "bit" that they tried to do was stupid as fuck.

The whole thing was scripted, including the calling out.

i only remember it from the wire, and i'm pretty sure craig ferguson used it once although he spun it as sdt (scottish drinking time), a nice play on his alcoholism.

See, that's fair - I'd never come across that usage and it's helpful toward understanding. Thank you.

I do think we can agree that it's not universally offensive and that the context matters in this case, no?

I'm not even mad. It's the kind of joke made by someone trying to fry you and failing because that's the best they can come up with. But anyway, I'm more shocked by how many people have never heard of it

Yes. And if she made a similar joke about "driving while black," it would have been equally offensive.

-Why are you charging this man?
-DWB

Hahahaha Hillary's so funny! Here's my vote!

LOL, I'd laugh my ass off if she did a bit like that. Still, she probably shouldn't be doing it.

Cautious about who to endorse. It was probably rehearsed.

Other than discussing the phrase, what context would be okay for white people to use it?

Dude in the video who called him out was an actor in the sketch I believe

He's cautious in terms of endorsements, because a cautious person would have been waiting until her nomination was a mathematical certainty.
