for real though,

who planned and wrote that joke and figured it would be fine to say?

hell the republican candidates wouldn't even do that.

Did anyone actually see the video? They were doing a skit with one of the African American stars of Hamilton, the C.P. time joke was obviously scripted and even Hillary responds as part of the joke.

De Blasio is married to a black woman and has black children, you think he would say such a stupid joke like than for real?

"I'm associated with a black person, therefore I can joke about black people in front of other black people."

why would De Blasio and Hillary think this is an ok joke to make though? Rehearsed just makes it worse imo. If it wasn't rehearsed you could blame it on de Blasio forgetting his place, but someone on the Clinton campaign greenlighted this and was like "yup, this is appropriate, 8 days before the new york primary" and did this...

Is abuela trying to be hip?

It's not that of a good skit, mind you, but both Hillary and the Hamilton react in a way that makes it obvious they're in on the joke.

Exactly. Everyone there is in on the joke. Doesn't make it a great or funny joke, but I would really be stretching to call it racist.

Would any politician seriously say this and imply "black time?" Like, how could they be so out of touch... And no aid is like "vest not to say that mayor..." I've heard people say "black time" before, mostly black people joking about themselves (and my white as hell 70 year old aunt who thinks she's hip because her black friends say it), though I've never heard CP Time...

But like what legit politician actually thinks that's okay to say these days? Could he have really meant "cautious politician time" ??

No, I'm pretty sure that's part of the joke. They both know that CP time means colored people, but they turn it around to make it look like he's just a funny old white guy that accidentally used his own abbreviation that was the same. It's a pretty standard comedy technique, but perhaps not the best time to be testing out your racist jokes.

They obviously didn't even write the jokes themselves. The moderator of the event, Leslie Odom Jr, is black and the entire moment feels scripted and the audience reacts with laughter at both his and Hillary's responses, meaning not even they felt the joke was tactless.

This is grasping at straws, honestly.

How well known is CP time? I have never heard that before, didn't know it was a thing.
It's an older phrase hence the use of "colored people", to refer to black people being late. In modern times it's a joke traded between black people, not taken in anyway seriously.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not entirely a huge deal. However, the handwaving of "oh lol Hilldawg" is kind of dumb, as it is a gaffe that should never have been made in the first place. Racist? Yep. Dumb? Yep. Take the L, apologize, own it, and move on. Don't make excuses for her.

Like, recently a Jamaican friend of mine on Facebook posted an Instagram video meme about how Jamaican food restaurants never actually have food. It was funny, I laughed. But it was a joke I wouldn't make myself, obviously, because I'm not Jamaican.
I heard that today for the first time at work lol.

She seemed quick to answer that way. Maybe it's something they say I duno.

But honestly I don't get it the outrage. Like...Racist?

Why are people allowed to call things racist at the drop of a dime? Okay, free speech say w/e. But it's like yelling fire in a school because somebody lit a cigarette. That's pretty much EXACTLY what it is.
EVERY time I see a tweeter, gaffer, or anyone online call something so small and stupid like this racist, disgusting, he/she's a POS. You are basically screaming FIRE or CANCER! when somebody lights a cigarette. Yeah. It's a cig. It's not good. It's unhealthy. But fire? Cancer? Really? It's that serious?

No...it's not. Calm down.

A shitload of stuff is racist. I think that joke is racist - I don't think its a huge deal in the context of this election.

Thank you for thoroughly explaining what is racist. Yes, making jokes about racial stereotypes because you assume folks of said will be fine with it isn't racist at all.

well, the handwaving away for Hillary makes sense because she didn't say it. de Blasio, on the other hand.... ehhh

as has been discussed, she was apart of the schtick and is every part as guilty. but again, handwave. own it and move on.

:-( I'm on a different wavelength here, I think... if it helps, my wife agrees with you.

To try to see it from the other side, I'm hearing that cpt has been used offensively against people of color by white people, and so for many it connotes a derogatory statement and NOT a joke about cultural differences. And so in this case you have, at best, white people being insensitive about their participation in a joke that relies on the term, or at worst, white people using racism as a set up for a joke.

OR a different reaction I can imagine is that it's an in-group term being used in a derogatory manner (since it's clear in the joke that being late in this case is a bad thing). OR that it's an in-group term being used by someone who's not in the group... kind of a who do you think you are type of deal.

Would those be accurate?

I don't think it's a huge scandal. I just think why the hell would they do this, during an election? They're politicians. They know that everything they say will be taken out of context

Yeah it being a joke they were in on as part of a sketch actually makes it more racist

Because they knew it was and thought it would be funny

But instead it's just awkward as fuck and elicited gasps (because it's racist)

Which just shows what kind of people were in that audience (hint: probably a lot of old, rich white people as tickets ranged from $500 to $15,000).

That someone running for a political office thinks that negative stereotypes based on skin color are funny in 2016 is just not acceptable.

And SMH at all the people in this thread who can't see how clearly scripted and rehearsed this "joke" was. Hillary didn't "bail" anyone out, she was in on from the start and knew exactly what De Blasio would say (and her campaign had definitely OK'd it beforehand).

I just watched the video. Probably gonna make the top 10 in this years cringe compilation. Why would she even agree to this? She came off as a chump that had the wool pulled over her eyes. I mean I understand abuela's desire to be loved by all, but this was pathetic.
