Final Fantasy IX now out on Steam

Waiting for impressions, and maybe for the price to hit $10. Hopefully it's good though. The only FF I've never played, not counting the FFX and FF13 sequels.

I'm on it. Can only dedicate a few hours but I'll post some screens, at least.

From what I understand the mobile version runs at 4:3 with pillarboxes. I don't see why it would differ here.

You are always my hero Falk. Thank you!

Love letter to the old Final Fantasy. Was my first Final Fantasy back then and it still is my favourite one. So much character development and awesome ones. German translation was also very good.

Hmm, interesting. Why is the PS4 version better?

PS4 version of FF7 has features that the Steam version of FF7 does - most notably fast forward. The achievements list are also different and in my very expert (...) achievement opinion the PS4 trophy is list much better refined.

Bafflingly enough, FF8 Steam had fast forward added in some time after release, but they never did it for FF7 Steam. It's not the first time a feature like that has been included in a Final Fantasy game either (see: FFXII IZJS)

For some reason I expected FF9 to not be priced 1:1 in Europe, since the other mobile ports on Steam weren't, as well as the XIII series games.

I got it on Android, its a nice port. I'd buy this again if its moddable. Hopefully people can figure out how to add in those full resolution background images that some of the former dev artists leaked. Maybe a team of people can clean up or redo the ones that are lost.

Well, I mean I've heard the game itself is good (albeit very slow in battles), but I'm more concerned about quality of the PC port itself :)

So wrong

Easily best FF

Nah he's mostly right. It's not the worst FF (that's 4), but it's a pretty boring nostaliga-driven entry which doesn't have much to say or offer on its own. Bad villains, silly plot, way too much omg-look-at-me-remember-me references to older FFs. Gimme something unique and different like FF8 any day. Or something that offers a truly fleshed out gameplay system like FFV's job system.

Worst part of this game was loading between battles/moves. I assume speed booster helps this immensely?

I havent played any pre-PS1 era FF's but I would actually say FF9 is my third favorite FF after 8 and 10. (I know, getting around to SNES era ones eventually)

Anyone played this yet? What are your impressions?

Played two minutes.

Font/interface sadly still feels a bit mobile-y.

Backgrounds, as expected, look like muddy and upscaled in 1080p.

Character models look great though.

Edit: Oh, was basically no delay whatsoever loading into the Masked Man battle at the start. So that's a plus. But I forgot if there was the usual delay on that on PS1 or not.

A lot of the features they tout in this port aren't in FF7's port on PC, but are on PS4. FF8 isn't on PS4, so I dunno what it does/doesn't have.

All this time to port FF9 to PC and they couldn't add a 4th achievement "FLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!!!!!!!"

HA!
That would have been fucking great!

Bought, but now the Final Fantasy section in my library is even more of a mess. This comes after IV in the sorting. Someone at Square is trying to kill me.

At least it had Vivi. A far more fleshed out character than both Cloud and Squall combined.

Slow battles have been "fixed" with this version, because you can just speed through. :D Makes the game even way better. :)

Sadly the backgrounds won't look as good as they could have, but the cutscenes have been rescaled (?) and they look good. Character models have been updated too. :) Let's hope the PC port is as good as this.

this will probably be the cheapest it'll be for awhile. FF games don't seem to drop below $15 too often on steam

really conflicted personally... good deal but i don't feel like playing it anytime soon

Bought right away!!! Couldn't miss out on one of my faves, and the last entry in the FF series I ever played.

True, Vivi is a good character. Cloud and Squall are pretty much dull anti-social shells for teenage players of that era to fill in themselves though. Supporting characters in FF are always more interesting than the leads.

Could you post a screenshot of the interface?

I'm very fond of IX, I played VII, IX & X as a kid and loved them all but IX is the one I feel the most nostalgic towards.

I haven't played it since around release time, really glad they finally ported it and touched it up.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

FFII cuz you can kill your teammates and level up by doing that.

That's really....super depressingly accurate. On a side note, being that I never played X and up, does that trend ever change??

From screenshots, the character models look great but backgrounds look a mess. Any chance of those higher res images being modded in, or would that not really work?

It's possible, but we only know of around 40 of those that still exist out of hundreds that are in the game.

I feel pretty much the opposite about everything you just said, including regarding FF8, which was probably the most disappointed I've ever been in a video game.
