Everything Wrong With "Everything Wrong With.." (A critique of Cinema Sins)

I understand why people dislike CinemaSins but I can't say I see the guy's perspective as though its existence and nitpicking is some sort of great damage to the art of critique
 
Sometimes they point out flaws that aren't actually flaws and that tends to defeat the purpose of a channel dedicated to pointing out flaws.
 
I like them pointing out the blatant factual errors. I don't think the thesis "people could mistake it for actual criticism" is a fair one, but equally yeah, if you're watching CinemaSins for film criticism then you should probably rethink that one.
 
As a compulsory nitpicker I love EWW even when I disagree with something. It's just an opinion and a persona. Some of the CinemaSins guys were on movie fights a couple times and they aren't like that as themselves.

I do hate the fake laugh though, but I think that's intentional.
 
well they are fun but they do get stuff wrong or on purpose ignore some context of a scene for a joke

the worst example I remember is the 300 one where they were confused by the layout of the battle and I'm just like "dude they showed you a fucking overhead view of the battlefield, stop being idiots"
 
I don't mind seeing some of the content creators who base their entire dishonest schtick on someone else's original work get torn down. I don't mind that at all.

And yes I realize the irony of pointing out that this is derivative in the first place and the Sherlock Holmes movie is derivative of another original work.
 
Some of their vids are hilarious (heavily depends on the movie) and some are boring and outright shit. _I'll take the good with the bad. Technically I understand while many hate them, but whatever...
 
I was watching the Toy Story CinemaSins and one of the early bits was Andy playing with his toys and the guy goes "Children's imagination. *Ding*"

Like, why is that a "sin"? All they did was describe the scene. Did I miss the joke?
 
I get that CinemaSins is meant to be taken as a joke. The problem is, it's about as funny as a Dane Cook standup special.

Also, I want "Hawkeye has a hoverbike, fuck you." tattooed on my chest.
 
I quite like the fact that people are criticising the video for doing basically what the videos it's criticising are attempting to do

While it wasn't necessary for this video itself to be as long as it was, I totally agree with him. Cinemasins literally grabs at anything to try to make a snarky comment about, and they just end up with an incoherent mess in terms of criticism. And they can't pass it off as a joke because the criticism is supposed to be the joke. There's nothing funny about mocking a scene for not making sense when it does make sense and they're just too stupid to notice. Their criticisms have to be on point for the humor to work.
 
After having watched 7 mins of the video in the OP it does the same thing it claims CS does.

They show a waiter stealing in front of everbody instead of in a more secret place and CS makes a point of it. 100% valid.

The OP video "I guess he's done it before and gotten away with it"
So far this video feels like it was produced by the producer of Sherlock Holmes
 
Would be fun to see this done for every CS video. This is coming from someone who likes to watch a CS video every once in a while, too. I like learning as well as dumb nonsense jokes.

Though people who actually use CS to legitimize an opinion on a movie are people you probably shouldn't be listening to and probably didn't even see the movie in question. Gotta learn to separate jokes from actual criticism you build yourself.

Bingo. You can't say something is just a joke if the basis for that joke is incorrect. Maybe if you're going for some non sequitur humor, but not when you're joking about a thing that actually exists. If the intention of your joke is to point out an error, there actually has to be an error.
 
I don't mind the Cinema Sins type videos or Honest Trailers that point out leaps in logic, narrative gaps, inconsistencies, etc but at the same time, I feel like viewers should keep in mind that cinema isn't supposed to reflect reality accurately.
 
Honest Trailers is better with their comedic deconstructions. CinemaSins is nit-picky and just not all that clever in its execution.
 
I dont get why people are so bothered by cinema sins I just see them as a fun way to recap a movie. I dont take them seriously.

I still don't get the point of the video. Dislike it, don't watch it. Honest Trailers does the same when it comes to which movie to parody and that's perfectly fair, it's their livelihood.

CinemaSins found the schtick working for them and their audience and it's far from malicious if you ask me.

There is this concept called suspension of disbelief, cinema doesn't have to reflect reality but their own rules as represented in the movie should be consistent.

They just cutely recap a movie in the same way I might to a friend.

Bothering to critique them too closely is a lost cause.

Which, in the case of Sherlock, they were.

Yet half of the "jokes/sins" was the video creators either not being able to follow this, conveniently ignoring the context that makes it consistent, or just hoping the audience is dumb enough to not think for more than 5 seconds about what they said to get a cheap laugh.

I didn't laugh once watching the actual Everything Wrong with Sherlock Holmes video. I went and watched at least another 2, and I didn't laugh there either.

There is literally nothing funny here. It's making factually incorrect observations, then stating them as if they are supposed to be a joke. I've seen the argument that it's supposed to be a parody/satire of bad movie reviews/critiques. I'd say they actually became that themselves, but still fall back on the "we're just comedy guyz don't take us so seriously" line the moment anyone points out anything that's straight wrong.
 
I like both of them and there's no reason people can't. They're different things. I enjoy CinemaSins take on this stuff because I myself am also very nit-picky so it's fun to laugh at myself. I don't get people who just have to hate it because HonestTrailers is better. Even though they're not the same thing at all. HonestTrailers is fun critiques made to look like trailers. CinemaSins is just a list of weird inconsistencies and strange things in movies and occasionally just have fun. It's not like the final score is important. It's obviously just for jokes.

Watching a critique of a movie, even a CinemaSins one, isn't going to make me hate a movie any more than I already would. I mean it's just more nitpicking of something that already nitpicks. "Why call them sins? There's a much better word for it." Oh, I don't know, because CinemaSins rolls off the tongue? It's just a name.

It's entertainment. That's all.

I think the title "Everything wrong with ___" has a certain clickbait factor to it. They don't tell you what's wrong and they also do it for movies that were well received, which in turn spurns the curiosity more. That the content then turns out to be completely hollow is also similar to the usual clickbait stuff
 
He does make a good point about some of the blatantly wrong things Cinemasins say. Whenever they review a marvel movie I want to beat my head against the wall whenever they asked a question or call something idiotic when it will seriously take the guy 2 seconds of research to figure it out.
 
Cinema Sins is in good fun. They love movies. They love talking about movies. They found an angle to be successful on YouTube. I like watching their videos. Even if 99% of everything they say is just trash talk there is still that 1% that's pretty insightful critique. People on the internet really need to understand jokes.
 
Some people care a lot about nit-picking a film to death, or finding all the alleged plot holes, so they can feel clever and declare it be a piece of shit, so I wouldn't be shocked if people out there did take something like CinemaSins seriously, at least far more than they should.

I was reading a lot of general anger at the CinemaSins channel, specifically their "Everything Wrong With" videos, which made me wanna check them out and see what the deal was. I knew about CS because of their very first "Everything Wrong With Spider-man" video, which I remember thinking "well that idea's perfect" when I first saw it. I only watched about a minute of it and got the gist. After watching a few of their newer videos, that gist seems to have changed to being this weird clickbait-y "make jokes about current films and pretend they're 'sins' or 'errors' or whatever because that makes the most money" kind of thing. Which is upsetting because it leads people to think good movies may actually have things wrong with them even though that's not the case. From what I've seen, the CS guys have a tendency to point out "sins" that are explained later in the films, so I thought it might be fun to kinda use their format, tweak it a bit, and nitpick the nitpickers.

But it's not!

That's literally the whole point of the video in the OP.

Nothing that CinemaSins pointed out is actually an inconsistency or a nitpick, it's them being intentionally ignorant to any explanation, context or history to a moment and using it for a cheap laugh.

I'm not arguing CinemaSins isn't trying to do it for a laugh, but I would argue based on the Sherlock Holmes video they're not ACTUALLY pointing out any real nitpicks.
 
Cinema Sins is fucking trash. It's not even funny. It's just shit.

It's like watching Looney Tunes with a guy who thinks it's hilarious to point out nobody would really mistake a rabbit in a dress for a woman.

After like 20 seconds either that guy shuts up or he gets told to go fuck himself.

Apparently large swaths of the internet identifies with, or actually wants to be in a room with that motherfucker.

Much of the internet is rooted in sadomasochism.
