Dark Souls 3 PC performance thread

don't think this is the only guy with a VAC Ban that is playing dark souls.

and just because he got one ban, doesn't mean he is cheating all the time.

Seems to be working for me so far. Thanks!

Tried the latest hotfix drivers, but still crashed. Tried the drivers you suggested and I'm crash free so far with the Bonfires which was an easily reproducible crash, just played for about 30 mins and was crash free. Lost a few FPS but no biggie.

I7-930 @ 4ghz

Game installed on an SSD.

Time to finally play the game!

Anyone have an issue with other players not animating? Whenever invaders or summons enter my game, their character model doesn't animate at all. Same thing if I am summoned except it applies to some of the enemies as well, like Crystal Sage just doesn't cast so I can basically solo that fight for whoever summons me.

I have had it a few times. Not very many though in the 50+ times i invaded or was summoned. It is really frustrating though and I think I lost both times because I couldn't tell if the person was blocking/attacking or changing equipment or anything.

Yeah this is ridiculous.

GTX 970
i7 4790
8gb ram
1080p res

running average of 40-51

wtf, anybody have any suggestions? this is so frustrating, its making me nauseous.

ive seen it sparsely on ps4 and pc versions, had someone over playing on each since friday saw it twice on pc once on ps4 so far

I have:
i5 4670k
16GB RAM.
GTX 970 ASUS Strix.

And I play from day one at 1080p, everything maxed, permanent and rock solid 60 frames per second. Try reinstalling drivers with Display Driver Uninstaller.

anyone know the cause of the Skating Animation in Multiplayer? It is unplayable for me and I guess it has to do with bad internet connection to the server or the players? I have good internet speed (50mbps) but not sure how to troubleshoot DS3. Wasn't an issue before, i think..

Cant play like this at all since you dont even know if people are attacking you or helping you or where they are moving.

Running everything on Max on i5/780, runs great except crashes immediately on anything over 'Low" lighting. Why does it keep adjusting the lighting performance?

no idea - i even tried making the file read only. The auto-detect option stays off anyway, but the lighting setting will change regardless of if the settings file already had "low" set in it, or if it was set to readonly with "low" saved as the lighting setting.
I have to remember each time I load up to change it to low.

the multiplayer connection / skating animation is my biggest problem though

People with 400 series and 500 series card can try 358.91(windows 7 x64 500 series). Running a temp setup until new cards(sold old setup) and have tried a bunch of drivers with my 570. These have the same benefit for me as the other drivers, but the GPU is used better so the fps is more stable.

Other drivers same settings(mix of low, medium and high 1600x900) GPU usage was about 40-50% and CPU usage 90-100% cpu usage(stock i3 550) and now 90-100% GPU usage and 50-70% cpu usage. 30-50 FPS.

Severe stuttering started when I entered the Catacombs. Happen for anyone else?

I have an i7 5820K and EVGA GTX 970. Haven't updated Nvidia in the past month or so because I don't want the new drivers to ruin everything. I'm on 362.00

Where are save files stored? I'm getting basically flawless performance except for a very noticeable hitch every time it saves. It seems to have gotten worse as I've gotten deeper in the game (bigger save file?). The game itself is installed to my Windows drive (SSD) but My Documents are on a slower one. I assume it's a hard drive write time thing but if it's saving to C:\ I have no idea...

Is it confirmed that the 364.72 driver ruins performance?

Also, OT, but is that Richard Feynman in your avy?

There is nothing you can do, basically everyone has these hitches. I guess you could lock it to 30 and you wouldn't notice them anymore, but that is insane when you have 60fps most of the time.

Ok has anyone ever heard of an issue like this with Win10?

Sometimes I start a game for the first time in a day and they run like shit, like half the FPS they should, but if I minimize the game and then maximize it runs how it should, until I load into a new area. This isn't a Dark Souls 3 issue, this is a system issue for me because the same thing happened with EVE Online. If I restart my PC it fixes the issue but its still weird. What could it be?

Cleaned out my PC of dust, set my target CPU temperature to 45C in BIOS and made it so all my fans go to maximum RPM if they ever go above that.

I've LITERALLY gained ten, sometimes TWENTY frames in places that used to tank my framerate - And places that used to kick me for a framerate error just don't anymore. And this is without disabling CoolNQuiet yet.

AMD CPU users, get better thermal management - The CPU heat throttling is REAL.

I'm definitely going to buy myself a better cooling system after this bit of experimentation.

Any suggestions? Thinking of going with the Hyper 212 EVO.

wear a helm that covers the whole face and head. This solves the crashes. Also you have to have a shield for some reason. Fallen Knight helm works good for this.

Well, tried it, still averaging 40-45fps in high wall of lothric...

This is insane. :(

I've tried even playing on low and 900p, still 40-45.

Something is wrong with your setup, but it's hard to know why without more data. I mean, my brother is using an i5 4690k + GTX 660 and he plays at 50-60 fps in that place.

Go to NVIDIA control panel and set in Dark Souls III options "Maximum performance", and check it again.

PD: I'm on latest NVIDIA drivers, by the way, 364.72.

I just realized the OP lacks this very important temporary solution for this game breaking crashing issue.

Well, this is in the OP for a reason, and bookends the very section you read:

The 364.96s are the latest and include a fix for the power management bug. People with a 500-series or 600-series card seem to have better performance with the relatively ancient 314.22s, though.

Yeah...

it seems to be getting worse.

gtx 970 ssc 4gb
i7 4790
even on all low settings I'm starting to get averages in the high 30's.

Power management set to max perf., 3d application settings adjusted.

WTF is going on :(

What does your performance statistics overlay of choice say? What is the GPU load, CPU load? VRAM, RAM usage, temperatures, etc.

What other applications do you have running?

Also you said you were using an xbox one controller. You should check that steam overlay log and see how big it is. Think it's posted on the first page, if it's not I'll find it and edit this.

edit: there are a lot of games with this problem https://www.reddit.com/r/darksouls/comments/2bjgb3/psa_new_steam_update_makes_dark_souls_crash_on/ this one is for dark souls 1. See what that log file size is. If it's rather large and you haven't been using steam long try moving those files.

I've tried almost everything posted, and I'm still getting constant slowdown when walking around the world.

If I lock to 30 fps through RTSS, it's constantly dropping to between 27-29 as I walk through the world. If I stop moving and rotate the camera, it can usually maintain a solid 30.

If I lock to 60, it's constantly dropping to between 54-58 as I walk through the world. Not moving and rotating the camera can usually maintain a solid 60.

What the hell is going on?

Everything looks normal. Temperates at a good range, GPU load is at 99%, cpu is fine, RAM isn't having any issues.

I'm literally running Dark Souls 3 at a fluctuating 33-51 FPS (consistently at 33--40) on:

GTX 970 4gb
I7 4790 3.6ghz
Windows 10
8GB ram.

Like, what? I tried old drivers, tried clean uninstall of old drivers, tried new drivers, tried no Xbox One Elite controller, tried windowed mode, 900p, 720p, all low, still cant run a lock 60.

WHAT WOULD POSSIBLY be making my computer unable to run this game at 720p on all low settings at under 50FPS consistently.

I'm losing it.

The GPU load shouldn't be that high. What is the core clock and memory clock at on it?

Guess Im one of the lucky ones here.

3570k

Rock solid 60 fps and no crash and I have played for 10 hours. It sometimes drops when I pick up items.

Steam overlay doesnt work though.

Must be more to it than that. I've not worn a face covering helm once and had zero crashes.

Somewhere along the line, helms, drivers, other video settings and series of video card are all interacting in a weird way that I've not encountered with my old gear.

Default, haven't touched it at all. I don't really want to OC it, I know I could, but it's SSC already and I don't want to take the risk.

SSC? Which 970 do you have. I got an MSI that comes by default overclock from reference design. And can overclock it a lot more, very easily. Not saying you should need to, but more information the better.

I have different specs but I'm getting this as well.

There are some moments where the game is at a solid 60 but there are also moments where the framerate just drops down to 52-55.
GPU & CPU usage aren't even close to maxing out in those situations.

Well i'm in a certain area of the game now where it is crashing rather frequently, had 3 crashes tonight. Afraid to play more and just have it keep crashing or crash during a boss or something. Hope a patch comes soon.
