Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

Yeah, the Landmaster stages piss me off. I realize that boss is probably designed to really show off the 2 screen aiming, but I think I still need some time to learn better coordination. There's just too much to look at!

Yeah, it took me a while to get it. Really have to master moving and shooting using the GamePad at the same time.

Also holy shit that particular Star Wolf battle I just done was fantastic.

Picked this up from Nintendo NY today. Came with a cool little "top secret" envelope with a corneria poster, a patch, a document from General Pepper and a really nice glossy poster of SFZero.

I can post pics if anyone is interested. Anyone else go?

Be stoked to see those. Going to pick up my first print now (Aus).

Controls are awesome so far, I'm enjoying the game so much, Fox is BACK!

I remember Miyamoto saying PG designed some of the bosses.

Yep, he did.

SFZ's last boss (assuming it is the last one and there isn't a secret mega balls to the walls showdown tucked away which wouldn't surprise me) isn't bad at all, it's just not particularly eventful compared to Jubileus, or that final couple of hours of W101, or even Splatoon's single player mode, all of which had amazing finales.

Kamiya insists PG can top W101's finale when he was questioned about it, but yeah, after Bayo 2, Transformers and now this, it feels like they got kinda burned out on the epic final boss thing.

Still, none of this counters the fact that SFZ is a superb game and a more than worthy addition to the franchise.

Bayo 2's final boss is the perfect example of gaming blue balls.

I don't think anyone can top the final boss of W101. That was a 3-hour fight. It could have been its' own game.

To get the blue charge shot you have to fire the shot right when the lock-on is acquired. You'll see the red reticle flash yellow for a split second; that's when you fire.

I don't know if you can really compare the final bosses of character action games to a space rail shooter but alright.
Had to cut my play session at Venom phase 2 cause of work but reviews be damned this game is superb. Can't wait to finish my first run later tonight before trying out some guard.

Nobody reads manuals anymore. So here's a few helpful bits:

Okay, Andross is hard as fuck. Any tips?

I can only destroy his hands then have to rings left to replenish my health.

When he starts converging his hands to do the clapping attack is when he's the most susceptible to damage in the first phase, but it's easy to get carried away. If you worry you can't commit, just run off of the pit. When he opens up his palms temporarily before punching just move away after he clutches his fist, it's a straight punch that's easy to dodge. The swatting attack you should just ignore, it's not worth whatever damage you can dispense since you can easily get caught up in the hand's hitbox and suffer double the damage.
When he has one hand it's pretty much the same but without the clapping attack so it's a little more demanding. When he's doing the electric grapple you need to make sure your aiming is on point while pulling backward. If you're feeling rather unsafe here there's no shame in using your bombs but I'd still save them for the third phase.
Third phase is basically a battle of strafing. Just keep firing your laser against his open mouth until you stun him, then fly behind him and pelt him with lasers and whatever bombs you have left. Remember that if you transform into the Walker while locking on you will immediately angle yourself towards the locked point which means you don't have to worry too much about missing your target.
Other than that Andross is a tricky fucker mostly on account of perspective struggling. He was really frustrating to figure out but it kind of makes sense at the end of it.

Rapid turn sounds...dumb.

One thing I can say that I think is fundamentally BAD about the controls is them doubling up everything. There are 2 ways to do everything, but the game usually only tells you one way to do it, so you forget the other way.

Up on L-stick and Down on R-Stick to do a Summersault when I can just press X. Like...why wouldn't I just press X when it's easier to understand? It feels needlessly complicated, especially when they could've been used better.

Well, I'm glad most people are liking it so we can get a proper sequel and not just some lame non-sequel.

I think that was my biggest problem with it. It's an inferior SF64. It's not bad, but just really unimportant and unengaging.

Everyone talks about the controls, but the game itself is just kind of mediocre outside of the controls. I'd be fine with a sequel that uses the same controls, as long as we simply got something more interesting than what we got here.

This is maybe a weird question, but are there any unlockables in the game similar to the Falco and Fox amiibo unlocks?
Aside from obviously the alternate paths.

Games Platinum have a hand in tend to have so many skins and things like that in.

That's how you did it in 64. Push stick up, press C-Down or whatever. It now lines up with how SF64 controls on VC. But if you're not married to that, you can now also just press a button. I don't mind.

This was super helpful, thanks!

Be ready to shoot as early as he raises the closed fist, and don't forget about stocking on twin lasers. You can really only shoot him. Also, don't get sloppy - this isn't a last phase.

I also recommend you to save smart bombs for a later phase. They are not really good while destroying hands, but they will come in handy (no pun intended) later.

Ok thanks. I'll give it another try later tonight. I just need to git gud lol.

I don't know if it's been posted or not (It's not in the OP) but the amiibo are early unlocks like Shadow Mewtwo in Pokken. It is possible to unlock them if you don't own the amiibo by getting all 70 gold medals.

EDIT: I just had the bright idea to Ctrl + F search for amiibo on each page. Yep, it's been posted.

100% a non-issue.

Played this for like an hour today after my roommate picked it up.

This has got to be, by far, the worst Star Fox game I have ever played. The controls are literally the worst. I was fighting them the entire time.

I don't know if you can really compare the final bosses of character action games to a space rail shooter but alright.

Bosses are bosses. Personally I'd say that Kid Icarus Uprising and the Star Fox franchise too have a few bosses more memorable and exciting than some of the bosses found in character action games.

Also it's worth remembering that the final bosses of DMC1, Bayonetta and TW101 integrated 3D rail shooting (god bless Kamiya) into their final encounters, so there's a healthy genre overlap.

That Iwata tribute is really, really cool.

Yup. Subtle, tasteful, and poignant.

That I would like to see. They certainly haven't come close to not just the final boss, but several moments in TW101 with any of their games following it. I remember reading that the TW101 team and the Bayonetta 2 team were "competing" with each other on who could come up with the craziest action sequences... I have to say TW101 team pretty much wiped the floor with them. I realize Kamiya hasn't been involved with any of them though, including SF0. I'm interested to see how Scalebound turns out.

On topic, can't wait to pick this baby up, I will as soon as I'm done with DSIII. This has been the best April in recent memory in terms of gaming.

My impressions right before the Landmaster mission

- Game looks ok. Smooth though.
- The enemy layouts and stuff can lead to some frantic shooting if you want a good score
- I'm taking a lot more damage in general than in SF64
- on-rails flight controls are great
- Dogfighting feels really intense
- All range movement feels weird when you're locked on. Because your frame of reference changes I have a lot of trouble dodging or moving where I want
- Gyrocopter is ass
- Walker's better than I thought it'd be, but strafing is confusing. I'm not sure why they didn't just copy Splatoon controls here..

Played for a good 45 minutes before I had to take a break. I'm not sure how I feel about the controls. While I got them to work pretty well they still didn't click with me.

I will say the Fox Amiibo is a must have. That was by far the highlight of my time playing.

God bless. I knew Platinum wouldn't let me down.

Fuck Amiibo.

what matters is the gameplay first, and Bayonetta 2 beat W101 imo.
although its a shame Bayo 2 could not come close to the first game epic moments either.

With SFZ, i think its mostly designed to be a classic experience, not much Platinum influence in the game because its designed to appeal to SF 64 fans first and foremost.

Its the equivalent of Activision licensed games for Nintendo, so im not surprised the game lacks epic Kamiya like moments.

Oh hot damn, that last Star Wolf encounter was to put it eloquently "cool as fuck".
WOLF WALKERS! Wolfens stay winning it seems

Despite the learning curve and it initially coming across like a hot mess the Andross battle in this game is really cool, a great showcase of using both screens and vehicle transformations, it took me 4 attempts but that's actually a nice change. A lot of the things that seemed too tricky to avoid ended up making sense in the end when I got my wits about me.

Looking forward to digging into the other missions I haven't seen yet tomorrow(the score board shows me another 9 or so?).

My early impressions of this game thus far is that it's fun and flawed but in the way I can appreciate, like this bizarro mix of classic SF64 and gimmickry that can actually come across as pretty inspired at points while a bit lacking in others.
The walker also makes me oddly happy, like just look at that thing plodding along, it's great!
Better than SF64? nah but easily my favourite successor since.

Did it ever come close to clicking with you?

Honestly, I think you should just give it a go for a few hours and see how you fare. You don't have any expectations regarding the controls anyway, so if they don't click if won't be a big disappointment/surprise to you. Then you can sell it off and minimise the loss.

And who knows? Maybe you will like it.

I'm having a hard time with the controls. I do love motion controls but I am seriously so disoriented playing this. I keep finding myself trying to aim and shoot looking at the TV instead of the GamePad. Like, I forget to do that and then when I remember I look at the GamePad and forget about the TV and get destroyed.

I find moving the Arwing, etc. to be easy and fun but doing that + shooting is so difficult.

Any tips? Is this normal and I just need to get used to it? Are you guys shooting mostly with the GamePad or the TV?

I'm just looking at the tv most of the time but in the cockpit view.

Controls didn't seem that bad to me, but I've only played one mission so far.

Reminds me a little of Kid Icarus Uprising.

(Still can't believe we didn't get an HD remake and/or sequel to that either)
