Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

Second try alright!:

I take it there's no medal higher than gold in this game then?

I'm not using the second screen hardly at all. I'm basically just using my best judgement for the gyro controls to sort of ghost aim at things when I need to.

Also, I don't care for the control layouts. I really wish L and R were tilts instead of the C stick. It's not easy to break and sharp turn at the same time.

I'm 4 levels in so far.

The Gyro thing was a little better than the walker. I did not care for the walker at all.

Can you post a video? I have no idea how you guys are getting those scores...
I lack recording equipment of any sort so I can't but like said above shoot down destroyed fighters for an extra +1 and use the breaks during intense moments to make sure you can get as many enemies as you can. I'm not sure on the specifics of the giant blue charge blast but that helps.

Thanks. About the blue charge, do you feel like there's a precise amount of time you have to hold the charge? like 1 second? I havent managed to do it even once...

That's the thing. Most people who complain about motion controls come across as "I've never liked motion controls and I'm never gonna like them so never going to try." I watch someone with that mindset stream this game or Splatoon and after 5 minutes they're looking for an option to turn them off or turning them off before they even start playing. I know that not everyone can grasp them as quickly as others, but doing so will yield much better control so it's worth doing. I notice people also think they have to do these ridiculous big movements with motion controls when really you're supposed to just hold the pad in your lab and make subtle movements. Big movements should be handled by the right stick.

Like, I get not liking change. But motion control is so superior to dual analog for aiming that it's not even funny. It allows for so much faster and more accurate movement and frees up your right thumb to do other things. It's like refusing to adapt to analog sticks for 3D games because you're used to d-pads; or refusing to use a mouse because you're used to sticks.
Is it really that hard to understand that some of us just don't like motion controls? Different strokes for different folks, it's not a difficult concept for crying out loud.

I didn't like them in Splatoon, and I didn't like them in Skyward Sword or the other Zelda games that had them, so I'm not going to spend $90 just to possibly hate them here regardless of how wrong or stupid you think I or anyone else is for having an opinion on the matter that differs from yours.

So finished my first run through just now - 3 hours and 14 mins with 1561 enemies destroyed altogether.

I really enjoyed it and got a huge nostalgia kick from it. Although at this point in the game with my current experience, I cant help but feel it would have been better just having the old style of controls. Don't get me wrong - when the gyro controls work out, they feel fantastic - but it's just too much to start with. I'm hoping this issue and the problems I had with getting frustrated on a couple of levels will fade away over multiple play-throughs though!

Also... *credits spoiler*
the Iwata tribute got me
like others have already mentioned.

Played it for a bit. It's pretty much what I expected, which is good. Some missions kinda drag like the Gyrocopter thing. It controls just fine, but those missions are a bit too deliberate for Star Fox.

The controls in general are pretty great though, it's obvious they're gonna take some getting used to and I feel like I'm totally sucking at the game right now. I had the same feeling with Metal Gear Rising, where it was also clear the game had a lot to it and you'd have to pay attention and actually learn the controls to get anywhere in the game. I consider this to be a huge plus. Pick and and play games are fine and all, but there's nothing wrong with having to take your time to learn the controls. I'm sure by the time the controls click I'm gonna be playing like a badass and I'll feel like I've earned it.

Playing through Area 3 and my only real issue so far is dodge and turning be mapped to the same input on the right stick. I have a habit of flicking it twice to start turning and instead end up dodging off to the side and its throwing me off bad. Loving the game otherwise. The controls seems to have clicked fast for me on this one. Took Pigma down in about a minute.

Oh yea, forgot to mention: Finally got to sit down and play the first set of training missions for the vehicles and the opening mission. Game plays great, controls do exactly what I want them to, loving the freedom I have to aim at places I'd have missed before.

Having the first level be Corneria 64-Redux in the first half is also a clever way to ease you into the controls in a familiar environment so you almost auto-pilot through Phase 1.

Yeah, this is what I'm hoping right now. I'm totally fine with the game if it's gonna click. Just a bit worried it's not going to happen in my case, I suck at video games. >.>

Glad to hear the motion controls are actually working out well for a lot of people after the learning curve is dealt with, game sounds great so far. Will probably hold off on getting it until at least next week though, too much stuff on my plate this weekend and still trying to get a complete file on Woolly World.

How do alternate paths work in this game?

I beat
Aquarosa
on Corneria and got the opportunity to play two hovercraft levels as the Arwing. I chose
Zoness
, which was a shitty mission now with a time limit. I screwed up twice and quit, but now I can only select that mission as the hovercraft again. Do I have to fight Aquarosa all over again to play that shit mission for the 4th time?

yes you have to beat that mission once. After that you can select the mission like the other ones. Imo this is the worst mission. feel ya

played co-op with my son for a while

it's our first starfox game, man this is hard. Taking a break after dying on the landmaster boss like 7 times

I remember seeing all that fuss over an easy mode but I guess they cut it

So would I have to beat that secret boss AGAIN to try the other fork? When I beat it I had two options.

I didn't exactly enjoy that boss either.

I died a couple of times in the same mission and then e message popped up. Something like there will be a supply with an inviciblity item. didn't pick it up though.
maybe that's it?

umm yea

Ok so I'm at
Andross
and I'm having difficulty with the last phase. Spoilers ahead:

I always get him down to his last hand and does the tractor beam grab toss. Is there anyway to avoid that attack? Also if (and when) I DO get grabbed I just spam ZR and shoot his hand but still get grabbed anyway. I usually don't have my smart bombs at this point. Any advice would help. Thanks.

Be ready to shoot as early as he raises the closed fist, and don't forget about stocking on twin lasers. You can really only shoot him. Also, don't get sloppy - this isn't a last phase.

I also recommend you to save smart bombs for a later phase. They are not really good while destroying hands, but they will come in handy (no pun intended) later.

I love Sin&Punishment 2, but SFZ does what it does better than S&P. In that game, you are limited to moving right and left on a bi-dimensional plane. In SFZ, you retain tridimensional control of your ship across different control methods. It's much more sophisticated than S&P in that respect.

Not knocking that game, but there's nothing quite like SFZ out there.

I'm not totally sure what you mean... S&P2 allows you to fly and maneuver all over any space of the screen in any direction, just as you would in a Starfox game. You occasionally have 2D side to side segments, but most of the game is full 3D flight, pretty much the same as Starfox.

In terms of the shooting itself, IR aiming is faster and doesn't require as much movement. It also never loses calibration. The one downside is that you have to sit within clear view of the bar and stay that way. Gyro aiming takes more movement and as a result is more sluggish, and it's prone to frequent calibration drift. I consider it to be an inferior way of aiming hands down.

Well, it seems Amazon's "Release Day Delivery" has failed me. FedEx is telling me it won't get here until tomorrow. Fuckers.

Thing is, I think this is more of an issue with Nintendo than Amazon. Back when Smash came out, I ordered through Best Buy and was guaranteed Release Day Delivery, but when the day came and the package didn't arrive, they blamed it on Nintendo. I wonder if it's Nintendo's fault.

Either way, I won't be playing Star Fox today :(

Do you have Prime? Either way, I'd call Amazon and complain. They'll give you something to compensate for the inconvenience, which you deserve.

If the first representative isn't receptive to your complaints, ask for someone higher up. Keep escalating until you get results.

With Prime, they're more likely to give you something substantial, but either way you're covered. Even like a $10 Amazon credit.

They delayed my SF5 collectors edition, and I called and made a huge deal out of it, got a digital copy for free.

Yeah, I have prime. They extended my membership by one month (But I'm on the free 6-month Student trial so it doesn't really matter) and they gave me a $5 credit. I really thought I was safe by ordering through Amazon. Guess not.

Got the game after the cool reviews and that stream, and even though I didn't preorder, I got a patch anyway! Also got a Hyrule Warriors Legends preorder bonus book too for some reason.

Anyway, loving this game so far, doing it co-op with my bro, and having an amazing time.

I just don't like that you have to watch the cutscenes for a new level and load in and quit it before you can do co-op.

I mean something like this:

WVW69jItW1E_Cs5msE

WVW69jItlHYWOYfhg8

Its similar to Omega Boost on PS1, the way it lets you circle around a locked on enemy.

Yeah I'm gonna stop for now. I'm a bit tired but this game I'll definitely put more time into. I wanna be able to blast through these levels!

Just finished it. Fantastic game, and still plenty to unlock/replay, but this is the third game to make me feel like W101 sucked the 'last boss' ambition out of PG. Then again, there's enough last boss in W101 for ten last bosses in anything, so I look forward to them topping it in seven games' time.

Did a run-through (leaving out three or so levels) and the controls worked very well for me. The walker is probably the toughest to handle, but managing it can be satisfying. The gyro sections were a change of pace, but I did appreciate how it was different. If expanded, there's chances for interesting puzzles. I also appreciate the twist they gave the 1st boss of the SNES/N64 game.

My biggest complaint? No Monkey-Gundams! Though Monkey-Tetsujin was a consolation.

My understanding from the other threads is Nintendo designed the actual encounters, with PG assisting primarily on art and music

Ok, I just understood something:

If you choose the option to enable gyro aiming only when shooting, it will automatically re-center the aim once you stop shooting.

Its more convenient this way, as it saves me the trouble to have to press Y to reset the camera!

Love the game so far but what the hell am I supposed to do with the Gigarilla? I take control of it and then keep getting "Mission Failed" shortly after seemingly out of the blue.

Yeah, that part was pretty dumb. You're supposed to tether it and pull it toward that satellite tower. Why? No idea.
