Atlus handling the western localization of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE

Even NOA wanted to make it clear that it's on NOA.

Again, I'm just bummed I won't get to experience the content in the game as it was originally developed by Atlus because of unclear reasons. I'd feel better if the reason for changes weren't so nebulous, but all it looks to me right now is unnecessary and misguided.

If Atlus were publishing this, I guarantee you these changes wouldn't be made.

What a waste of effort. Christ, NoA. Just stop. I don't want to support these practices.

I can't wait for Nintendo to announce that, instead of having the swimsuit DLC outfits, we get Zelda/Zero Suit Samus-themed ones! Hey, it worked for Fatal Frame V, right!?

Seriously, Nintendo and their recent edits have me seriously re-considering that NX purchase. I know I'll probably purchase one anyway, for the Nintendo-exclusive titles (Mario, Zelda, etc.), but I'm not happy about it. :/

NX is going to be imports only if I get one. I'm done waiting for prerelease info on whether or not their releases are going to gutted when they make it over here. Although I'm getting the feeling that their output from inception are going to be designed to pander to western twitter types so I may just skip things all together.

I would be fine with this. Actually replacing lost content with something else is much better than just having the content erased, with no alternative.

Amazing that NoA is going out of their way to cut up a game they're going to send out to die and not even market.

It's a miracle we got Bayonetta 2 as is.

Well, one less game to worry about in June.

Yup. Between Star Ocean 5, Zero Time Dilemma, Atelier Sophie, Grand Kingdom, Odin Sphere and No Man's Sky there's enough other games I'm interested in that won't be censored, so I'll buy a used copy of this once someone uncensors it. Didn't take too long for Xenoblade X.

This is really disappointing. I thought Nintendo had the right idea with the sort of audience they were targeting by releasing it with the original voices and songs, but then they go and fuck it up. I was seriously tempted to try to get a Wii U just for this game (probably a refurb or used since it would be for this and a few others) after the Direct where they announced it would have the original audio but now I've lost interest. :/

Whoever said they just made the audience for a game with a small audience even smaller was right. I'll buy a used copy when Wii U homebrew takes off (which should be soon since it's near the end of its life) and there's an uncensor patch.

it's cartoon pictures of clothes on cartoon people.

Yeah I dunno when people start throwing around words like "gutted" because of that I have to roll my eyes.

Still, Nintendo are the ones who greenlit a game that pretty much only targets people who would care about that, so they should really have known better. This game's development has been a shitshow all around.

But hey, at least it's not the most embarrassing RPG release on their systems this year.

Aside from all this arguing I just want to share how great and fucking hot Yashiro is. You get to enjoy Macross #FE: Do You Remember Love.

Dude is hella funny and one of my favorite characters in the game outside of Kiria in terms of character development and dialogue.

I really love the character interactions and development and how much of it is a find yourself in the entertainment industry and coming of age story. I really enjoy seeing them struggle in their work at first but break free and find success as a star.

It's a really positive game by the end in the message it sends.

Assuming the NX is region-free (unless you plan to import a Japanese console instead).

And yeah, it doesn't seem like Nintendo has much indication of changing their stance on their edits. It's really upsetting.

I would be fine with this. Actually replacing lost content with something else is much better than just having the content erased, with no alternative.
I agree that replacing lost content with something is better than nothing at all, I still don't agree with them purposely removing something that's so harmless.

The hot spring DLC isn't even lewd (it's mostly character conversations to deepen the bond between each other), and serves as a nice "slice-of-life" moment between missions. I could maybe understand, if it included some sensual massages between the girls, but honestly, given what I've seen on Youtube, this is something you see in TV commercials.

As for the other edits (that we know of), like the gravure/idol posters turning into standard pictures of girls or the panties turning into spats/black voids. It's ridiculous, and there's no reason for it other than "Nintendo being Nintendo". I do agree with the earlier change/edit, to one of the main characters (her name eludes me right now, the idol singer with the lingerie and zipper). The standard pants look much better on her, but then this was reflected in the Japanese release too and wasn't purely a NoA change.

I'm at a difficult situation, since the actual gameplay portion of Mirage Sessions still interests me. It just saddens me that we can't get the exact product Japan received, only with English subtitles. It shouldn't be this difficult.

do you have the email addresses on hand? I'll send an email also to both, as much of a waste of time as it will be.
Atlus's, yes.

NoA is a bit trickier. You'd have to email via their website.

I suppose this could be put under Corporate Questions->Corporate Social Responsibility, although honestly there isn't an email specifically for these sorts of complaints so I'd recommend just picking whichever you think is the best option for messaging NoA. Either way, if you're really doing this, thank you so much! That's kind of awesome. Most people just complain about things and then move on without ever actually trying to do anything about it or letting companies know how they feel.

I know there's little hope that anything can be done to change things now, but nothing wrong with trying i guess. Who exactly would be better to contact in this situation though? I'm guessing Nintendo since they're the ones who most likely imposed the changes.

Again, this is what I don't get. Fine, let's say they're going to cut it, are they going to now market the shit out of it and really push it to the FE and SMT crowds?

I doubt it.

Cool, that's one less game I need to worry about buying new.

Will buy used. Fuck Nintendo of America. This precedent continues to be absolutely disgusting.

I personally think it's just one of those games they technically made and promised a while back, so they feel they need to release it since they've already shown it off before. That said, they don't want to waste resources on it, so no dub, and localizing is outsourced. They certainly don't want to get controversy or have the game put on news, so they still do the work to make sure to cut out parts that could be considered too bad in their opinion.

Essentially, it feels like they're just pushing it out because they feel they have to rather than because they want to.

What really bothers me about stuff like this is how much time, effort and money theyre wasting on censoring things when they could have used it to do other stuff... like dubbing the game.

Nothing about this really surprises me, Nintendo continue to be the most anti-consumer company in the bunch.

What shocks me is how popular they are here, and why people even care about the NX.

Censoring the things that they are is likely a laughable cost compared to dubbing it. Then again if they did dub it, it would be to appeal to a wider audience, which they'd then likely censor it anyway because of that.

Of course they're popular, most of their games are good and fun.

Which doesn't excuse them from this garbage, seriously. At least i can spend my money on something else.

I agree with CJ. The games are great, but Nintendo's popularity as a corporation is surprising. The stupid nonsense they do, like oh, not designing hardware with ethernet ports, or region locking their consoles puts their name in the shitter for me.

I'm not saying it's not the reason, but the thought of Nintendo huddled up in fear that they'll be singled out for publishing one of the billion games released in America with anime girls in swimsuits is hilarious to me.

I think the whole point is that it's just time, money, production support, QA, and everything else under the sun spent on a meaningless (according to what most are saying here) practice that could have been put towards another project, more QA time, better LE goodies, etc.

Wait, wait? Sheesh, I didn't think they were that far back. (Though to be fair, I never noticed with the Wii.)

The second that the NX is announced and has no ethernet port, and it almost assuredly will NOT have one, I am going to walk upstairs to my kitchen, open the sliding glass door and go out on my deck, look up at the sky and yell: FUCK! Then I'm going to walk back down here and put on the most relaxing and chill show that I can find, like Shirayuki or Flying Witch.

I feel like Nintendo and Nintendo of America in particular seem to have fell down in popularity a lot. I remember back when a lot of people seemed to love Reggie (or at least love using him in memes), but now most posts relating to him seem to talk about him reminding them of used car salesmen.

Based on what I know about Japanese companies, Reggie has about as much control as Victor Ireland does over Namco Bandai. Just look at how Sega of Japan treated Tom Kalinske.

Reggie's always been that way (like him or not), the thing is Reggie has no real authority. These decisions are all made in Japan, Reggie just has to be the US face of them.

Thanks, I'll be doing this too. I'll be sure to mention the other Nintendo games that I haven't picked up because of it as well.

Thanks for links, I sent my messages and that's all I can do at the end of the day is try to express my feelings of disappointment with the choices made by Nintendo and Atlus on this and hope that one day they might stop treating us like we can't handle the games in their original form.

but thats the thing,.that takes work, and time. and even makes less money if someone was going to buy the dlc.
and its not like Nintendo has stopped talking about the game either, they recently announced the SE coming to NA

I'm conflicted, I have a preorder for this game because I heard good things about it, but I'm not sure if I want to support Nintendo's questionable editing. It seems extremely prude of Nintendo to edit something that's not even that suggestive to begin with. Its not like this game has mass market appeal, especially with only Japanese audio.

I was shocked when I bought my Wii U. Shame on me for not doing my due diligence with research.

I think that most hate NoA gets is pretty unfair though. It's not like they have any power in that corporate system. Reggie, whether people realized it or not, was always supposed to be the used car salesman.

nice anime choice

It's a double edged sword but at the end of the day if we keep supporting it with our wallets it wont stop.

It might mean we wont get as many of these games over here if the numbers are too low, but maybe they will start to understand that we don't like the changes being made.

For what it's worth, that tweet is saying that it's up to Nintendo on whether or not they'd ever document the changes made during localization. Even if Nintendo enforcing the changes is probably the case, that's not remotely what he's saying there and it doesn't do anybody good to start throwing it around as proof.

Yep. He put up another reply to clarify.
Just that they won't talk about the localization without going through Nintendo first, not that they have absolutely nothing to do with it (true or not).

I was on the edge about picking this up (and I was planning on getting a WiiU or NX, depending on if it's WiiU game compatible, soon anyway) but this news tipped me over the edge into not buying it.

That's another lost customer for them, I guess. I'm not fanatical enough about it to be sending emails and stuff but I wanna send the message that this isn't okay so I just won't buy it, I suppose.

Probably Atlus. They're more likely to actually do something with the feedback and care, considering they don't do this with their normal games. NoA does this with basically everything recently, even M rated titles, and don't really seem to give a shit.

I get why people can be upset because of the changes, but the overreaction in here is too much. Not buying a game for some puntual changes that will probably change the experience in a 1% or something?

I'm still surprised that we are even getting the game, so I'm not really bothered by some minor changes. On the other hand, I would have been totally pissed if they had changed/dubbed the songs, because I feel like is a major portion of the game.

They are also probably targetting some very concrete age rating, so maybe the things that they are changing come from the rating board rather than Nintendo/Atlus changing them for fun.
