NX will launch in March 2017 globally, won't be at E3 (focusing on Zelda instead)

Everyone who is (maybe) a dedicated gaming site. E3 attracts companies like Forbes, WSJ, Time, and various other publications that still have a pretty high viewership in the non-gaming world. That PR is valuable. I rarely (and for a few of them have never) see those companies post articles about Nintendo Directs.

Because they have never ever announced something as big as a brand new dedicated hardware platform in a Nintendo Direct.

That demographic considers Nintendo games to be for toddlers, and has for nearly twenty years. They have never been able to sell to them.

If you ask me, the NX is going to try to regain the audience the Wii had. It's really all they can hope for at this point.

When everyone has traded/purchased a PS4K / Xbox Two this holiday, the 'casual' buyer ain't going to be getting the NX in March.

Yup.

Activision isn't there, EA takes a different path, Nintendo has been fiddeling around with their set-up... didn't other publishers opt out as well because of high prices?

E3 will try to change, but man, it's going to be hard.

E3 really doesn't work anymore. Why go to a crowded convention hall and get noise/lights blasted at you while you stand in line for hours to play a demo you either already played or could play via a download? It's just an outdated concept nowadays.

What a mellow and underwhelming way to confirm a new console.
A console we know nothing about and yet we have confirmation of one game and even a release date! I remember us not learning the definitive launch date of the OG Wii until September 2006 (a mere two months before launch) and more than a year after we first saw the console.

Now? Here's a codename and a launch month, go nuts. Christ.

*shrug* I think it's harder to say than you're suggesting. It just depends on how strong their "new concept" actually is and how well they're able to market it.

For what it's worth, I really doubt the NX would do any better launching against two major hardware revisions.

Traditional games media is outdated, that's why. Youtube/Twitch is the future.

At this rate I expect the launch of the NX to take place at the gates of Universal's Nintendo Land on the same night as Star Wars IX

It's when consumers are willing to spend the most money.

Yeah every year if you have kids old enough its a time where you are looking for that under the tree present, and consoles fit the bill.

I never believed that Nintendo had super NDA, better NDA than every one else in the industry, saying Nx was like saying Voldermort lol.

The most obvious answer was always no news about NX = there is no NX ready, its a way off.

I still think Nintendo will have an eco system which is cross mobile, Handheld and console....not sure how they will do that, but their market is different from MS / Sony.

To be fair, they will probably make more game money on Mobile than Sony and MS do on console lol.

So much for the insiders on GAF and Twitter...looks like they knew nothing......

The WiiU has some of their best titles a decade, nitpicks nonwithstanding, so I've never understood this mentality.

While it may be a sales disaster, should that really matter to -people who like Nintendo games-? Are you ashamed to even own a WiiU because it's sold so poorly?

I don't care how it sold personally, no. But E3 last year was terrible, and the biggest game for many die-hard Nintendo fans in Zelda has been delayed to 2017 after having previously delayed to 2016. There isn't really much, if anything that I'm interested in spending $60 for this year coming from Nintendo, and after recent developments I'm not optimistic about E3 this year.

It'd help if they got decent 3rd party support, but thankfully I own other platforms for that. I feel for Nintendo-only owners.

Its either they have a VERY STRONG concept and they want their own controlled unveiling and all the spotlight, a' la Wii, or something else happened and an E3 and fall release had to be scrapped. We just don't know.

so a few scenarios i'm thinking happened:

1. oh god panic everywhere nothing's ready. mario's not ready. retro's new sleep training device isn't ready. somehow zelda's not ready either. the nx launch was just going to be lego tales of minecraft and a splatoon update that included all dlc. so they're rushing projects to meet march and they're pushing the hardware back to meet those projects. (see also: 3ds launch)

2. spend money smarter. maybe with ps vr this holiday and some things nintendo's aware are happening in late 2016, they decided to vacate the premises and focus on an even better launch than what they were planning. with their marketing dollars out of 2016, they can buy less expensive ad space in america, and they can focus better on a worldwide launch when that wasn't happening before. maybe a handheld component is happening at the same time, or set for november, and having launches closer or at the same time will benefit the handheld form factor better.

3. shit happened and a delay happened out of their hands concerning the manufacturing of some of the parts for nx. so there really isn't going to be anything ready for e3 because they can't get the special tech working or even approximated in time. november would be a gamble, but march is a sure thing as far as those components are concerned, so the system is pushed back to that date to at least guarantee there aren't shortages or other issues on release.

kinda going with #1 myself, but that's after knowing what happened with wii u.

I just can't wait to see how they try and damage control this (if they do).... I mean I don't know. The one thing though id only Nintendo can pull off making moves like this. think about it hard enough and this is typical Nintendo.

They will show Zelda at E3 and everyone will just talk about it.

Every console since the Saturn has released in the holiday season in NA. That's not a coincidence. Whatever Nintendo's reasoning or justification is, there's no way to spin a March release as anything but a negative in the aggregate.

I'm genuinely expecting the NX to be yet another 'Nintendo' machine, shunned by third parties and the usual line-up of first party Mario games.

The Wii and Wii U have ruined Nintendo.

What if it's a below $200 handheld you buy to access Nintendo games? 3D Mario, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing are huge properties that sell systems.

In NA (where the holiday cycle means the most in terms of shopping traffic) the PS2 launched in October.

New Year is a huge sales period in Japan, with the closest match in retail activity being Golden Week. So for Sony and Nintendo, March is the natural 2nd choice for a launch outside of the winter holiday period, 1 month prior to Golden Week. But missing it in Japan is not some minor thing, even if they can compensate with Golden Week.

I said nothing about shame.

Further, your rebuttal undermines your own point. If Nintendo's entire business is dictated by a single person - the death of whom sets them egregiously off-course - then it has major structural problems.

You weren't arguing structural problems, you were arguing an inability to manage. And I'm sorry, but if you think that a ship keeps sailing without issue when the captain disappears without an appointed first mate, I don't know what to tell you.

Exactly. By the time the holiday rolls around next year it's not the hot new thing anymore and the mainstream is not going to flock to NX like they did with the Wii. Nintendo is cray for even considering a March release.

Software would probably be the key in that scenario like how the 3DS had Mario Kart and 3D Land for the holidays.

Why do you do this? I was already depressed, now I want to cry, being a Nintendo fan has never been more depressing :( I don't even know why I should watch E3 this year, no NX, everything great shown for PS4 will likely run on PS4K which I won't buy, and XB1 games will be better on Win 10 which I don't want to install because of the crappy legacy games compatibility. :((

Why are you depressed? I don't get it. The NX is coming, It's only 3 months later than expected. I honestly don't get how that is depressing? 3 months are nothing. Good time to even save up more money.

I hope we get some sort of tech leaks before then.

I wonder if Nintendo is upgrading any internal hardware with the NX? Kimishima is in charge now since Iwata isn't there and could've made some changes

As far as early-year launches:

8-bit Nintendo Famicom console launch in Japan: June 1983.

PlayStation 2 Japanese launch: March 2000

Just a few off the top 'o my head.

Yup.

Activision isn't there, EA takes a different path, Nintendo has been fiddeling around with their set-up... didn't other publishers opt out as well because of high prices?

E3 will try to change, but man, it's going to be hard.

Yup, i believe Disney Interactive and Wargamming are the other ones that won't be there.

If you ask me, the NX is going to try to regain the audience the Wii had. It's really all they can hope for at this point.

But that demographic is way more likely to buy something like a new console during the holydays than in March.

If that's who they are going for they shouldn't underestimate the "oh this is new, I could get it as a present for the kids/family for Christmas" mentality

I've been saying for like a good couple of years now that E3 needs to do more to adapt to the current state of things because they keep losing people, and this time losing major companies. While there's always talk of social media trends, it doesn't increase views or money as I know plenty of people who have no idea what E3 is but knows what Nintendo, Playstation and Microsoft are. They're not interested in long winded talks from conferences, they just want to hear about a thing and move on.

E3 is barely an experience for anyone at home as it's originally a tradeshow and it hasn't changed much in years and sticks with much of the same crowd of viewers.

It's a Bomb on Arrival

That has even less chance of happening though. It's a fools errand and just speaks to how fucked Nintendo are long term, tbqh.

a whole year away? guess that means no Nintendo games to play for a whole year....lucky there's still PC, Xbox & PS4 that wants to make money....

I want to say I'm disappointed with this outcome, but a 2017 release might lead to lower prices or better tech. Not surprised by Nintendo choosing not to show any info at E3. That would lead to actual excitement for their hardware and that's not something Nintendo can afford to risk. E3 2016 will belong to Sony and Microsoft.

I'm thinking more a combination of 1 and 2. PSVR, PS4K, XB1.5, new iPhones/iPads/etc. all fall stuff. Even though NX is a new thing, it's still gonna have to be a really interesting thing to generate that lost buzz from the holidays.
