Recent hands-on sessions with Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE at PAX East have confirmed previous reports that the game will be subject to a series of changes for western markets.

The first is an age bump for some of the characters - Tsubasa, Itsuki and Touma - taking them up from 17 to 18 years of age. There are also changes to costumes, with some of the female characters wearing less revealing clothing.

Elsewhere, a dungeon which features portraits of female characters in bikinis has been altered - the characters are now fully-clothed.

Finally, it is being reported that the Hot Springs DLC - which allows characters to dress up in swimwear - will not be released in the west. We don't have official confirmation on this as yet and have asked Nintendo and Atlus for clarification.

Nintendo recently issued a statement claiming that Atlus was responsible for localizing the game, and presumably Atlus has made these changes independently.

Censor if old

Based on Xenoblade and other Nintendo titles, don't doubt Nintendo put some kind of 'pressure' in Atlus USA, when they release everything else fine and M is their middle name

What's the point of increasing age if they'll still change costumes and not bring over the hot springs DLC?

None.
Apart from the age bump that made kind of sense, all the other changes and removals wouldn't have changed anything for the pegi/usk/esrb ratings.

IT'S ALL BECAUSE OF THAT SJW FEMINIST ALLIS--what's that? She's not in the company anymore? So she was never at fault?

Who cares, she's a woman. Let's blame her anyway!

I'm not sure what caused Japanese companies to become so focused on making these localization changes in recent years. There doesn't seem to be an example of a game losing success based on complaints about underaged characters or TnA in general.

Although I guess with Nintendo it's the idea of fostering a "family-friendly" image.

"Atlus has made these changes independently."

Yeah. Sure. Nintendo as a publisher with a long history of doing this kind of changes totally did not give absolutely any instructions to the developer on how to localize the game.

Totally.

I thought from their statement it was Nintendo making the changes to deem it fit for the west while Atlus was only there to localize.

It was, Nintendo Life for whatever reason misread the statement. And the changes simply don't fit what Atlus has done in the past while they perfectly fit what Nintendo has done.

Here's the dungeon that they refer to in the OP

If you ask Atlus, they say Nintendo is making them do it. Nintendo says Atlus is doing them independently.

If the changes are so bad that nobody wants to take responsibility, maybe they should realize that they're not a good idea?

But Atlus didn't make any changes to the P4: Dancing All Night dlc costumes, and some of those showed a lot of skin, especially for 16 and 17 year olds to wear. So something doesn't add up. The changes really don't bother me, but I do find it kinda silly.

Hm, I thought we covered this in the previous TMS thread? But either way, I highly doubt these are the only changes in the game.

After all if we've discovered this much merely from trailers and a small amount of pre-release footage, I would expect much more censorship in the end.

What's the point of bringing this super niche jrpg about pop idols that's so hardcore they're not even going to dub into english if they're going to censor things?

Of course none of it is worth the pitchforks and torches some parts of the internet I'm sure they'll cry for but why even do it? None of it was even in the same level of raunchiness as Fatal Frame V. Just rate it "M" and let them have it.

And why would NoJ be okay with all this while NoA wouldn't?

I hope you all still buy and support the release of the game, as it is a really good RPG and from whatever Western version reception I've heard have all been positive.

After playing the Japanese release the changes so far don't really seem that substantial with the only really worrying part is whether or not the story and character interactions change for the 2nd Dungeon and some of the side quest events since the approach for the localization of this game seems very sterile.

I would love to be able to play the game in English to see if there are any real story changes.

In the original Japanese release it was a CERO B game with really little, if any, offensive material at all and the story of the game really shined when it focused on the character interactions and their personal relationships and struggles in the entertainment industry. It really is a positive message by the end because for a lot of the game you felt like cheering on for the characters and see them succeed as they figure out things like how to deal their personal life and stage persona, following their dreams of becoming a part of the entertainment industry, and ultimately seeing them succeed and go from novices to more mature and established professionals in their field.

It's really a coming of age and self reflection kind of story and I don't see as much of an issue so long as they do not really change what makes this game so enjoyable and great in terms of the character interactions and development.

Are there any western reviewers or impressions that have also played the Japanese version as well? I really would like to know or see for myself since it would be a shame if some things had to change for a really good game.

As for the swimsuit DLC, it's not really as much fan service as what you get from a Tales game or in Persona.

The DLC scenario is just shooting a commercial and the characters interacting for a job they have to do, compared to Tales games or a Persona game where the swimsuit scenario would entail the characters picking up girls or partaking in an actual innuendo, fan service event.

I personally don't think the changes that have been confirmed at the moment are enough to really turn away from the game, but I would like to know how the translation would work from version to version, as the Japanese version has a lot of nods and references to both Japanese and Western entertainment.

There really is no reason to rate the game for 18+. No content in this game justifies that kind of rating as it is a 12+ kind of game.

The oldest character in the party is 21, which is Kiria. The youngest is a child actor Mamori, who's 11. Everyone else is between 16 and 18. It's still a coming of age story, but I don't really get the changes as there are plenty of child actors and entertainers in both the Eastern and Western entertainment industries.

This game isn't Yakuza 5. You're not out here hosting akushukai and dealing with fans that harass you. The game is really positive and it doesn't go into so much the controversy and scandals. But that's not a bad thing, because not every game has to have some kind of controversy or scandal to move the plot.

What does people witch hunting her have to do with this? Are you just bringing that up for reasons? This was changed because Nintendo likes to be a family friendly company unless they are publishing an m rated game to get gamer cred.

Atlus's PR manager straight up said the changes are because of Nintendo.

It's not Atlus's fault.

He also might have deleted that tweet I can't find it.

It's probably worth mentioning that people spotted that they went as far as recording new lines of dialogue for when someone's age was brought up for at least one character that was aged up, so that it matches the localized text.

I wonder what is in that Hot Springs DLC that Nintendo felt that they could not bring it over, after all Fire Emblem: Fates and Awakening had Hot Spring and Beach DLC...

Unless the Hot Spring DLC is as problematic as the one ATLUS made for Etrian Untold 2:

Seriously. It feels like they have weird priorities here. This game's not even dubbed and they're worried about fanservice or underage characters alienating audiences? Hell, it's not even a particularly egregious example of those.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Oh fuck off really.

I really wanted my swimwear ;.;

Nintendo has never said that actually. This article presumes that's the case.

This whole article reads like someone lurked the other #FE thread and made some liberal assumptions about the statement Nintendo put out last week.

Nothing more complex than cultural differences, I think.

This has nothing to do with this and keep bullshit internet tribal warfare out of here because you're the only one forcing this into it.

They censored Fatal Frame as well and that was rated M.
