Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

Thanks. Yes, I considered the Wii version but I don't have a classic controller, and I'd be buying it *just* for that game. Starfox 64 3D is rare and expensive as fuck in the United States. Average new copy going for about $100, all the way up to $700. Used copies aren't much better, they're around $59 for starters. Very annoying considering S64 3D is $19.99 everywhere in Europe because it's a Nintendo select.

Can someone explainn me how to make a u turn with the airwing, I sometimes done it totally oblivious of how (and in the worst situtations). I know you can do a loop with x, but is there another button for the U turn? or is it only some shitty joystick shenanigans?

B.

The manual is linked in the OP. Also, there's a big ass picture of the manual page with those exact controls in said OP.

So is there a "second version" of Venom like in Star Fox 64? The portal above the planet on the world map makes me think there's more I can do there

The portals are odd, since levels you get to on a straight route will have them as well, just based on how the level ended.

It's... very misleading.

I knew the manual was post here some days ago (thats how I learned the fast turn with the walker), but i didnt know which page. Thats my fault for not looking in the OP again.

Well but you know that you have that manual right there in your hands, too, right? :)

When you hit the HOME button you can access a manual for every game right there.

Should I try to pick up Starfox 64 3D to experience that game? I know it's highly regarded, and sadly the N64 version isn't available on Wii U virtual console.

The 3DS circlepad can't hope to match the precision of a regular analog stick (it's OK for a regular run but for scoring, bleh), the remixes are Pretty Lame and so is the rerecorded voice acting, with flat delivery and awkward inflections being the norm.

But it's Star Fox 64 on the go!

And it has a bunch of added convenience, like a mode where you can save between levels and the ability to replay individual levels at any time!

And the graphics are ~so pretty~ . My favoured way to play SF64 will always be on an actual n64, but 3D is a perfectly fine way to experience the game.

Cool, thank you. Looks like a free-gamefly trial may be the way to go -- I can play the game for free for a few weeks at least. I would buy the shit out of this game for $20. Stupid Nintendo. *sigh*

For the life of me, I just can't understand why they didn't even offer the OPTION to use a different control setup.

Played the game, like it a lot. But I'm done for now.

The controls are fine until you start amping up the difficulty of some of the medals. That's when things start to REALLY get annoying.

I don't want the way I hold the Wii U gamepad to change my aim. If I adjust my sitting position it shouldn't affect anything on screen.

Lock the crosshairs in the center of vision, and use left stick to aim only. That would have been the same as Star Fox 64 and would have been totally FINE.

They purposefully made aiming on the top screen somewhat difficult. I've notice that the two squares just don't feel as precise as in previous games and it feels like you NEED to aim with the bottom screen to hit anything.

I don' mind the idea of looking at the bottom screen to aim precisely. But you SHOULD be able to pull it off on the top screen better than current. And remove the gyroscope stuff entirely. My thumbs are infinitely more precise than my wrists and elbows.

Did you read the thread? Have you tried the alternate control method which shuts off the gyro until you press ZR?

I went ahead and took the plunge after reading so many impressions. Did the training, walker training, first two campaign missions. My initial first impression is that of being really intrigued by the game mechanics and the basic concept. For what I want it's more interesting than a standard Starfox game with updated visuals. Didn't have any trouble with the relative control during camera lock-on at the end of the first level, but I always play Rocket League with using the ball cam. And I've always liked that kind of relative control in 3D. I can see why it doesn't work for some people though; I can't agree it's bad, just not for everyone.

I'll see how this goes.

Hmm, how many of the stages have extra objectives to get a "Mission Accomplished" instead of Complete? So far I've only found two,
beating Wolf in Sector Beta within the time limit, and turning around on Venom to deal the final blow to Andross.

I read the paper manuals and since Nintendo made them "electronic" the can go anf fuck off.
I know its worse for me as I need to then look for something on the internet if I dont know what to do, and that Nintendo doesnt give a fuck, but I just hate the electronic shit the are doing now and im not going to lose my time on that mediocre cheap thing.
Ive bought it physical, put a damn booklet inside my game with gorgeous art like you always did :(
I still remember how good was the manual of Wario Ware Smooth Moves, with the drawings and wrtiiten by the characters. Its something we havea lose forever, there was a bunch of creativity going into those and I loved reading them. That they actually contained useful info was secondary.

Every stage except the extra ones stages you find in secret routes.

I've had my fill of the game. Was working on some medals to unlock the challenges, but those ended up being pretty boring so I can't stomach going after 14 more to unlock one more challenge since I'm having little to no fun going after medals.

These arcade type games just aren't for me anymore as I have such a distaste for replaying things any more and never cared about setting high scores or mastering levels.

It was fun unlocking and finishing all the stages at least, and I enjoyed the controls.

I got bored with Star Fox Guard super quick too, so time to sell this on Amazon.

I would implore you to continue guard, it's best at its back half. Titania was awful but it improves dramatically at Zoness.

I feel like dogfighting is where these controls shine the most. It's very fun and intuitive. I find myself wrestling with the controls every now and then during on rails segments, mostly due to the speed.

Considering the game started off as an "all range mode" tech demo, IIRC... that makes some sense.

For the final playable sequence's optional
"turn around and hit the weak point"
moment, does that trigger any different ending cutscenes than if you don't do that?

Just imagine if Nintendo had thrown in splatoon-tier multiplayer dogfight team battles.

Man, just imagine that Star Wolf Venom fight but with two human controlled teams flying around the planet, chasing each other in the ravines, and running around as robot chickens.

Glorious

I can't remember. The differences aren't significant though if there are any.

There's no difference, outside of seeing "Mission Complete" instead of "Mission Accomplished."

Bleh

There should've at least been a moment where
fox sees a faint image of James giving him a thumbs up
, or it
unlocks sunglasses for Fox

SIGH

It would elevate this game by a considerable degree for me. Even the most barebones multi would be enough. Can barely see this happening though

Okay, I mastered the controls playing this all day today, GF is away for the day, Dark Souls 3 and Quantum Break are done, it's just me and Fox.

Full on aggressive mode, it's like the Walker and arwing are an extension of my body.

My God, this is awesome, I really feel bad for the people who didn't give this a chance.

I had one fight on Venom where I ducked into the ravines with the forcefield coverings to grab some rings and Wolf chased me right in there.

"You wanna get nuts, Wolf?! Let's get nuts!"

Replaying Hunter I also found that doing the fight basically entirely in the Walker sorta trivializes the fight. Wolf's much better at shooting Arwings than he is Walkers.

Walker really makes the gigarilla fight much easier, too. He cant do much to you when you're running between his legs to shoot his butt.

I have to disagree. Splatoon is motion controls done right. Star Fox is not intuitive at all and while fine once you learn it, it's still a burden during a hectic dogfight.

That's not how I remember the old Splatoon threads when that game was released. Lots of players sticked with rollers because they couldn't cope with motion controls.

Had a $20 Best Buy gift certificate so got the game + SF Guard combo pack. Just started playing the first few training missions and is it just me or is using the Gamepad view not really needed if you do ZR + Motion option? Is the Gamepad view more essential for certain set pieces because was able to aim and take out all of the enemy cannons in the training asteroids without any issue. Also, just started playing the Walker training mission, that thing is ridiculously fun to mess around with, really think I'm going to love this game. Ok, time for Corneria.

Edit: Ok, just played the Corneria boss fight and see now that sometimes the game forces you into Gamepad mode, still feels pretty good though, just takes some getting used to. Can I still play for proper scores and records if I stick with ZR + Motion aiming for the rest of the game? Anyways, game is really fun so far and it feels great to play a real Star Fox game again.

Any tips for the first level? I just don't understand this game at all. I can't believe the first level was so damn frustrating and I bought this game on release.

I beat it but feel so unsatisfied since I didn't get it.

Use the gamepad when in target view. Offense is near impossible in third person while it's active unless you've had a lot of practice.

Switching to walker in all range mode automatically turns you towards your target.

Reset your reticle often, especially after turning.

I hate how I have to reset it often but I noticed there's no choice.

Any tips for aiming? My angles seem way off.

On stage 2 Walker mode was actually pretty fun even with the gyro aiming.

Beat the game a few days ago and not really getting the complaints. only time I had any problems was the first level on the spider mechs tying to get Pepper but once I figured it out it was smooth flying ahead.

Maybe consider the locked cursor option? You don't need to reset your aim.

Try playing the majority of the first stage with the cockpit view displayed on the TV screen (press the minus button). Remember to occasionally tilt down on the right stick to decrease the Arwing's speed and fire charged laser shots at the enemies (hold RZ, lock onto enemy, immediately release RZ). Don't worry about the Wii U GamePad screen. If you need to get a better look at your surroundings, momentarily switch back to the vehicle view (press the minus button again).

Yep. Basically at the end, the motion controls of Splatoon were better viewed in nearly everybody's eyes becuase people in the other side were destroying people that didnt want to use motion controls, so they need to change fast, or admit defeat. And people's ego stand in the way usually on anything with online play.

Here you are trying them against a singleplayer game, so the views of this people having difficulty at the beginning using this controls (or not even trying the game) is that the game doesnt work and the controls are busted.

The only thing I dont really like is finding the retiucule has gones to the right and doesnt move in the position I am anymore and I need to remember to use Y to put it back in place.
After going for a bunch of score gold medals, im really liking the motion controls. Having a plus 1 in on range mode killing guys that are alone becuase you shoot them again while they are on fire feels great. I had a lot of problem in 64 to get +1 in those situations, so I basically locked on everything on sight.

I die so many time playing this game. I'm struggling to like. But I have hope. Should I have hope...?

I died A LOT on my first playthrough, and my scores were all low silvers. Trying to go now for gold and understanding the controls, Im having a blast and rarely die. Havent tried arcade mode yet.
Its normal diying a lot at the beggining until you beat the game, its just like dying a bunch on bayonetta and getting rock scores in your first playtrhough.

i think it's worth a shot to get some complains going in Miiverse and other social networks about the switch of views been just in the (-) button. It needs to be in the R thumbstick click.

It doesn't make any sense to have a repetition of bombs in the R thumbstick when the R bumper is a perfect button for it.

The game will flow a lot better, specially for people that have problems switiching views between the 2 screens, with this R Thumbstick remapping. This way all the important functions would be always at reach without any unneccessary finger gymnastics.

Just beat it. Missing that one planet.

Game is super duper short, but it's a Star Fox game so I knew what I was getting into. However, I'm feeling pretty unsatisfied with the finished product.

The high points are good with the final battle against the
Star Wolf
team, and one or two of the all range mode missions
(missile, etc)
,but the controls feel so damn clumsy at points, and I disliked having to look at the gamepad and the main screen.

Honestly, this just made me want to go back to Starfox 64. It's the same formula but with a lot more frustration due to the controls. They're not super difficult to grasp, but I just felt they were unnecessary and, at times, slowed the game down.

Graphically speaking, it's weak, but the bosses have some of that good Platinum screen filling goodness and there are some head nodding moments, like flying in big firefights.

Starfox is still an awesome concept, I just wish the game would have turned out better. I'd recommend a rent.

I went back and played Assault and 64 today. Holy shit, these new controls are a godsend. The games are much more boring without them. Not to say that they are bad in the older games, I just find the new set up far more engaging. It actually feels like you're piloting a vehicle.
