Overwatch Beta Thread: Cheers Love, The Beta's Here!

Everything about Tracer is dope, from character design to abilities -- although I find myself having trouble actually dealing damage, I've got my head around her sustain, but should I just be trying to get really up close? These guns feel pretty weak in a lot of circumstances.

I'm still trying out different characters (really liking Bastion, Widowmaker, Mercy, and Soldier), but does anyone else feel like Soldier's ult is a bit weak if you're actually a good player who can aim?
Feels like it's great for newcomers to the genre or people not used to playing FPS games, but it doesn't increase damage, right?

Yeeeah this game is pretty darn great. Really brings back the memories of TF2 Beta, familiar but fresh and exciting.

The mode with random heroes is a great way to gain familiarity little by little without feeling bad for making the wrong choices. Really encourages experimenting too!

And I'm also already starting to feel the "that play of the game was garbage, I totally did better that one time" rage.

Okay. So I love the hell out of this game. Been playing since the beta went live on Xbone, and am just now getting off to relax for the night.

Mercy is my healer of choice. But she's so squishy! How can I increase her survivability?

You can start healing someone and continue healing/buffing when ducking behind cover.

Sometimes it's good to save your guardian ability (where you fly toward a teammate) for when you need to get out of dodge.

I got through a payload mission with only 2 deaths doing this. Super satisfying.

Been trying it on PS4. Tried out the tutorial and then a match with AI bots. It's really good.

Only tried two characters so far, Tracer and the Korean with the ice gun (can't remember her name), but gonna mix it up once I get it into actual matches and see what fits.

But this has promise. Last time I got into a shooter this imaginative was Team Fortress 2 and constantly playing on 2Fort.

What is the post release support going to be like for this? I mean, will maps/modes/characters be free in updates with optional skins and the like for purchase? Will maps/characters cost money? Will the game just ship as is with no additional content planned?

Damn. Game feel great also on consoles. And alot of option choice and key binding. Awesome.

All maps and modes are gonna be free.

Everything (maps, modes, characters) will be free. They said that they might give an option to purchase cosmetics with actual money but so far, it will all be earned through playing the game.

Mei is Chinese. D.Va is Korean.

Game is pretty good, but man it falls into the same pitfall as so many other team FPSers:

Support is extremely advantageous to the point of being necessary.

There's only four support heroes.

One of them stinks in comparison to the others (Symmetra.)

And only one of them has the healing capability to keep a tank up under sustained fire (Mercy.)

So you chances of winning is heavily altered on this single Mercy champion being on your team. And she's boring as hell. She's the medic from Team Fortress 2. Yaaay.

I mean, even if every support champion was extremely capable you only get four to choose from. Maybe that's the testament to how boring support roles can be. Unless you're the engineer from Team Fortress 2.

Sounds great. Already got this pre-ordered but was a bit concerned as I hadn't heard or found anything about that. I was hoping it'd be something like TF2 where maps and the like were free. I'm all for the ability to pay for cosmetics and the like if they need to have some sort of post-release monetisation though, much rather something like that than paying for new characters and map packs.

Well... I tried to freeze Junkrat's wheel.. it didn't end well, poor Mei.
So far my heroes' rotation is Pharah, Reinhardt, Mei and Lucio.

Symmetra is fantastic, especially once you memorize the map layouts better.

And you don't need a Mercy to win, especially if your tanks play smart. It's not like the TF2 Medic/Heavy synergy here at all, though you can play that way if you want.

Still really enjoying the game, can't wait to get a full six-man roster on comms together

I can easily see this taking up stupid amounts of my time in the next few years

Getting better as mcree, landing those headshots feels so good

Hehe

Wait until you learn how powerful Sym really is...

Have you seen Lucio?

From the hours I played tonight, it seems like supports depend on the tank you have, the map, and the position your playing (attacking or defending). The supports all play differently and cater to different play-styles and team compositions. Imo, there doesn't seem to be 1 support that is just absolutely necessary in every situation.

Symmetra is fantastic, especially once you memorize the map layouts better.

Nah she's a gimmick, a gimmick that has to keep momentum up throughout the game. As opposed to Mercy who can push back on a big enemy push and recover, Symmetra kinda just stands there sheepishly, casting worthless shields and trying to resetup her traps.

? mercy is hardly necessary in competitive team comps, zen/lucio are typically preferred for their vision and team heal/speed respectively

Played a couple rounds months back and it did not click, however all these positive impressions have definitely got me interested. Downloading it again at the moment, time for round 2.

It did not help jumping in on PC and just getting drilled by super talented individuals, lol.

Mcree stun comes out too fast. Genji counters certain defenders too hard. And Zarya seems really weak if you don't have good teamwork. Those are my only complaints.

Her gun gets stupid powerful if you can maintain LOS and tether.

I've tested more on my laptop. I played tutorial more deeper, and some matches. Here's my result.

Overwatch on 940m/i5-6200U

Setting: Minimum
Resolution: 1366x768
Maximum FPS: 63
Minimum FPS: 45

This is wonderfully optimized PC Game I have ever seen. I loved it.
Day 1 confirmed

teleports can be a pretty big deal to get to objective quick
although ive seen mercy res a reaper on the point who then ulted and team wiped

symmetra is great if you like fucking with people
or spawn camping

who cares about your awful day-1 analysis?
when you can't beat the argument, try to discredit the author

Yeah the teleport is great, it feels like it's waaaay more unprotected. And after it's destroyed you just kinda... wait.

She can be pretty fun if you're on a good team who is going to win anyways, but when the shit gets down and there's no Mercy on your team... You get Mercy.

Every character has their own thing and that's Symmetra's, it's not a gimmick just because you don't like her pacing and tools. Knowing map layouts + learning Symmetra I believe is a win. Here's a good one:

Junkrat is so much fun, especially against newbies.

I'm the only one that argued it on the merits of mechanics. The counter arguments I received are just "other people think you're wrong."

Mechanics that you don't fully understand, because you have played the game for a few hours, tops. Symmetra is super powerful, but also very hard to play effectively. It's understandable that you don't fully realize her power because there are a ton of new people playing right now, and they can't play her good. She requires far more knowledge about the map layouts, while Mercy is very straight forward, just lock your beam on someone and you're good to go.

I think Blizzard will improve the algorithm to determine POTG in the future. As for now, the parameters probably are still too simple.

you're quite the hypocrite buddy, i gave you brief reasons why competitive teams tend to lean towards zen/lucio more often than mercy and your response was "lol who cares about esports"

but we'll defer to your two hours of experience instead

I'm having fun. But i'm not sure I'm finding it better than TF2 was.
I think you die too quickly. I'd rather see health/damage scaled a bit for more longevity. Just a touch.
I'd also like to see the specials or 'ultimates' take a little longer to charge. Like 15% or so.

Junkrat and Lucio are so far my favorite both really awesome, Junkrat especially due to his personality "Ill just..leave this here!.

Lucio is super useful for capture point maps especially. I just love how he plays too!

And yeah with Junkrat. Once someone told me a few months ago to play him like you do TF2 Demoman, it all just clicked into place for me. Demoman was my fav. class in TF2.
