Overwatch Beta Thread: Cheers Love, The Beta's Here!

I played the weekend beta in November. Has much changed since then? I love the gameplay, but I felt the maps were lacking in that there were a lot of dead ends and it was difficult to traverse the map after you died since they are quite large.

Last night was the first time I played the Overwatch beta so I'm not sure if the maps changed, but it did feel like there was a long run to get to the front lines sometimes, even when the spawns moved. It probably doesn't help that it seems like only 1 class has a tele and it's their ultimate ability, I never saw it actually used in game.

It also seems like there aren't respawn waves like in TF2. Most of the time when I would respawn and some of my team was dead I didn't respawn with them.

Played for about 5 hours last night, this game is incredible. Definitely picking it up day 1.

My favorite heroes so far are D.Va, Bastion, Lucio and Reaper. That'll change as I play more I'm sure, and honestly I've been having such a blast trying out all the heroes and their abilities. Love all the possible playstyles and team synergies you can get going.

One of my favorite things to do as Reaper is to go into the top room on what used to be the 3rd stage of Lijiang Tower and then drop down onto the point while ulting. Got a full team wipe doing that last night. No one expects it.

Game is incredible so far.

Playing as Mercy a lot. Jumping to teammates with that uber strong heal or damage boost makes such a difference.

Shame none of them ever check their damn flanks for tracers.

Things that kill me as Mercy: snipers, tracers, fucking grapplechains roadhogs fuck. Nothing else.

Edit: Bastion is an absolute noobstomper. It's ridiculous. Easily counterable by any coordinated group but in a game full of randoms who are on match #2 you can rack up kills in the 20+ range without thinking about it.

Have you played him on Ilos yet? It's the Greek island map, if you haven't played it yet then get ready for fun. Lucio just right clicking people off the objective and into the sea all day long... amazing!

I have played the map, but I don't think I've played Lucio on it yet.
Mainly just experimenting with everyone last night. But i cant wait to try it!

Re: Thorbjörn, is there any way to repair a turret or do I just have the mechanics of the TF2 Engineer ingrained in my head and look like a fool swinging my wrench at it for nothing?

Things that Get My Tracer Killed™: Blinking into a short wall at the edge of the map on Ilos and going past it, therefore plummeting to my death. Twice.

Swinging your hammer at it repairs it. It only grants 50 HP per swing though (used to be 100 until they nerfed it), so it will die to focused fire even with you swinging at it.

so far i'm having a load of fun. i'm just playing some bot matches before joining a match. i didn't expect the gameplay to be this fast. i would love to play this at something above 60fps. if playing against real players is just as much fun then i'll definitely be buying this game.

I know TotalBiscuit would talk down on people that would only lay one character during a game but do you find yourself doing that? I think it would be hard for me to switch characters mid game. From the videos I've seen Widowmaker looks like a character I would want to main. Defense, great mobility and great firepower/range attacks.

I've had several games where my initial character was just getting wrecked and I switched to someone else to take advantage of a situation. Its pretty satisfying when you switch and manage to help push an objective or capture after the switch.

Definitely shouldn't main. Not just because TB said so, but because the other team can easily counter you once they start to catch on. You could always switch back to that main in a match, but staying as one hero the whole time will get you shutdown if the other team is any good.

Maining one character in a game is fine, but you're at a team disadvantage if you're missing a key role.
On the other hand switching for the sake of switching may also be a bad move since you're losing the advantage of your last class. If you're the only widow/sniper and you swap to something else because you've "been one class the whole game", you've just lost your main long-range support which may be more harm to the team than good.

tl;dr it depends on your team setup

Hmm I wonder then if it makes sense to become extreemly familiar one character for each category (assault, defense, medic, support). Because I don't see how casual players will be able to know the tricks of every single character, but 4 characters sound reasonable. Switch based on the need of the team.

This is a very good point that I didn't think of at all.

I definitely need to be more active about switching for counters, but most of the time I'm the only Support or other class on the team and it leaves me in a weird spot if I do.

You know...it's fine if everyone on my team wants to play Reaper.
It's fine that I have to pick a support out of obligation.
It's fine that I'll never get play of the game.

It's not fine that I never get a single commendation for healing and playing the objective.
Be a better person, commend the healer regardless of team.

Not really a game where you'd want to main one character. It's best to have like 2 characters at least in each archetype that you feel comfortable with so that you can switch if you need to counter / adjust.

I actually found that in a lot of my games last night people were giving out commendations to the supports like candy.

Yeah you'll want to have a decent grasp of a few heroes so you can swap around if needed. Just don't always swap for the sake of swapping mid-round.

However if you're a reaper and there's two other reapers jesus christ swap to something else.

Can confirm. Played Mercy. Got the most comms in every game I played (about 5 or so last night). I tended to get about 35-45% damage healed per match.

Honestly casul players arent really a thing with these games, you may never get better at aiming etc, but you will always get better at learn maps, heroes abilities etc. Its not like theres only one counterpick option for each hero either, for example lots of people in this thread are beefin up bastion as a monster, if i see a bastion i either switch to widowmaker or roadhog and just destroy him.

Best Buy doesn't seem to be sending codes so I ordered it on Amazon last night just to see if they would send one. I've yet to get an email and was wondering if anyone had luck with a quick turn around time via Amazon?

I enjoyed my time with the beta last night on the PS4 except for a few things.

No one wants to play support so I did. I did not mind it, but would have been nice to be in the action instead of the sidelines essentially sometimes.

I still dislike console voice chat parties sometimes for games like these. No one talks or wants to talk. I got lucky last night in that everyone cooperated and worked on the objective.

I worry about the longevity of this game on a console versus PC. I would love to pick this up day 1, but I worry the online community will die on the console within 6 months.

I don't give a shit what TotalBiscuit says in general (the guy is a pompous hack), but you should be willing to switch characters mid-game if you're not doing very well. If you're doing well and your team is winning then by all means stick with your character, but always consider changing heroes if you're on the losing side.

Yesterday for example I was playing Control in Nepal and I was getting completely shut down as Zarya. So I switched to Junkrat and his zone denial made all the difference in our win. I didn't get any POTG or end-game cards since I didn't play him the entire match, but it still felt good.

I got my code through Best Buy. I pre-ordered several weeks ago and got it the same day as my order.

If you're trying to get a code for the early-access to the open beta you've missed that boat.

To get a two-day head start in the Open Beta for you and a friend on May 3–4, simply pre-purchase or preorder any edition of Overwatch by April 29

You can still participate in the open beta as normal, though.

If you're missing codes for the head start, contact Best Buy.

The game and mechanics of each character aren't remotely complicated enough for this to be a worry. You need to be able to switch up when it's necessary otherwise you're a detriment to your team.

Nice to see so much activity in the thread. man was getting sniped by this one Widow last night. People really arent messing around

Guess that's what I get for playing with my Steam controller. Still getting used to the mouse pad. It's pretty much like using a macbook's mouse pad. You can turn really fast but it's a learning curve

It's fine that I'll never get play of the game.

I got play of the game last night as Mercy. Shot two enemy players off of the payload with my pistol and then rezzed 3 people.

Supports aren't at that big of a disadvantage. You did use Reaper as your example though and he is notorious for "Q of the game" with death blossom. Doesn't matter what you play if you have a Reaper who knows how to phase into the middle of the enemy team and hit Q, you're probably not going to get play of the game.

As far as commendations go support players always get votes on PC, at least in my experience. Group rez, speed buffs, and teleporters are game-winning abilities.

I like the gameplay of the game. But not gonna get it. Its a hell to play on consoles with terrible teammates. Its gonna create alot frustration i think, And this is with people who have early access who have a idea of the game.

Is everyone oblivious to single enemy players going completely behind enemy lines and capturing points or is it just console players.

I feel like they need more useful communication shortcuts.

My pc crapped out while playing this and all I wanna do is play more lol, oh well I'm definetly buying it so hopefully my pc comes back from being fixed before then! Games fantastic

Yeah and that respwn te is kinda long but that's may nuewt be me.

I've had a couple of turn-the-game-around ults as Zarya now. Proper teamplay can completely decimate a whole team in seconds!
