Please tell me the PS4 Neo upgrades of my PS4 games will be free ?

Gonna quote myself :)

Maybe I'm cynical but yeah I'd be surprised if many 3rd party publishers go back to their old PS4 games to work on making them look better for the more advanced PS4 without charging anything for it. Seems like the perfect opportunity for a microtransaction!

Well if I have understood correctly, old games need to be patched in any case to work on ps4 neo hardware. So it's just a choice of the developers to achieve or less improved grafic assets.

'Here we have FIFA14 Neo for the reasonable sum of $9.99.'

'Finally have a working version of the deeply loved Assassin's Creed Unity - now on 1080p for your delectation and delight. A mere €10.'

All PS4 games are to run on Neo without a patch.

All games after October need a Neo mode built in. September titles need to be patched.

Developers/publishers can update old titles with a Neo mode as they see fit.

PS4K Patch Pricing Revealed

Patch for 1080p 30fps = $9.99
Patch for 1080p 60fps = $19.99

*Framerates Locked
**Dynamic Resolutions Not Permitted

I expect about 2 older games to be patched, 1st party, Sony will fund it, market it, and you will never see another old game updated.

Depends on the game. If it's been out for a while don't expect a Neo update. One prays for Driveclub and Uncharted 4 60fps updates.

I just don't think many developers (other than 1st party) will go back to their previous games to patch a neo mode in. Maybe mid-late 2016 titles, anything prior for publishers may be a waste of resources and time, if it requires work.

Would love to be proven wrong and see some older titles patched though, I would definitely replay some I own digitally but I'm not re-buying a game I've completed to play it at a higher resolution/frame rate.

Yeah I think Sony might "Role Model" the upgrades with a few select existing titles (Uncharted 4, Driveclub...maybe Bloodborne?) and let publishers do as they please for their portfolio.

What would be incredibly funny is Square Enix releasing FFXV on 30rd of September with the date of "mandatory Neo mode" on 1st of October and going all "nope, no Neo mode for FFXV".

Just got back from the future where they announced everything...

They will be free.

Also... Trump is president...

Square-Enix are one of Sony's biggest supporters so nah, they didn't plan their release date over something silly like that.

Assuming the leaks are true, games released in Sept have to patch in a Neo mode, don't they? It's only after Oct 1 that it's required at launch.

I'm surprised by the persistent suggestions from leaks that 'all games' will offer something, because there's a number of indie games where I find it hard to see anything meaningful the extra power would allow them. What would a Neo mode in Shovel Knight offer?

I have to assume that there's some common-sense leeway there and it's not an out-and-out TRC.

My guess would be that even something like improved AA could count as 'Neo mode', but yeah I think Sony will apply logic to what they expect based on the game style.

Uh-huh? How exactly?

I dont expect many pre-October (or perhaps when devs were first made aware of this) releases outside of some Sony first party that will go back and patch a game to take advantage of Neo.

Im not sure what the incentive would be for publishers - would it lead to that many more sales of an old game?

According to the leaked info, regular PS4 games can run on Neo without needing a patch as it has Base mode for running those, where I imagine will simply "fool" the games into thinking they're running on a regular PS4.

Well, I think it will depend on the publisher but extra work should also get extra money, in my opinion.

They aren't gonna sell you a new PS4 and then ask you to buy an update for a game you already own to make it run better. That's just stupid.

I imagine the only thing that is gonna change is that developers will have their games check what hardware it's running on and load up the appropriate settings. For example, If it's on the current PS4 model then it will load one set of textures and keep the framerate locked at 30fps. If it's on the PS4 neo then it will load up another set of (higher quality) textures and unlock the framerate.
Hahaha.

There's a cynical part of my brain going "Even if it's an absolutely basic sprite-based game, if you lock the non-neo version to 30fps, that'd fulfil the requirements". That's the sort of thing I'm hoping common sense can avoid!

Neo might be a good place for them to push for 80€ regular pricing, up from 70-75€ they are asking now. How about it? Obviously it'd still be $59.99 in US.

I was scarred by Broforce too, man.

Sights I can't forget.

There's no guarantee existing PlayStation 4 games will be upgraded to leverage PS4 Neo hardware. It should be an iffy thing at the devs discretion.

They'll definitely be playable, but the 4K upscaling likely won't work on every PS4 game and it'll be up to the developers to work it out.

Upscaling legacy PS4 games to 4K is theoretically possible with patches, but don't expect it to be available at launch. And if it is, it'll likely only be available for specific games.

Most games will enjoy performance improvements out of the box purely by virtue of the better hardware right?

Probably not, since they'll run in Base Mode on PS4 NEO, which should emulate the processing speed of the regular PS4.

I honestly hope they do charge just so I can see the fanboy damage control.

"A remaster of a remaster you say? NOPE. /This/ remaster looks better than the last version! Totally worth buying the game for the third time at full price, especially with that new neo plat!"

I guess it's a good thing then, that I posted about the subject already a week ago. Too late to flame.

I guess it's possible, if they think there's enough demand for it. Some players might buy the game again, if they've already sold it away, or played it on PC due to better performance. I wonder if it's possible for them to charge for the PS4K patches? Depending on the price and changes, I might pay for them, at least when it comes to my favorite games.

They will be software patches, so as far as I'm aware those should be free. I think it would be wise of Sony to make sure that language is already clear in their stipulations for Neo upgrades if it hasn't already been included in the leaked documents already.
