Litten also spits fire like a circus performer and Popplio looks a bit like a clown. I think they are going for a circus theme.

In his defense, you are supposed to improve the designs.

Grimer, Muk, Voltorb, Electrode, Magnemite and Magneton were basically fillers from the 1st gen, and I'm sure we can find some others for 2nd gen.

This is a FIFTH gen pokemon.

And yeah, the starters have been mostly hit or miss from gen 3 until now, which all 3 are just plain bland.

But the vanillite line has something going on, i guess. Grimer and muk + the fillers are that, just filler. Nothing, in this case a mass of purple animated blob. Even garbodor tried to be something conceptually.

And the starter part is arguable, without nostalgia googles the 1 gen starters are as bland and hit or miss as the rest, but they get a pass for being the first ones.


That's why the gen1 comments are so weird, they are extremely nostalgia-biased and lack any critical analysis. IMO every generation has it's ups and downs, and every starter generation delivers in a way or other.

Obviously this is based on the base forms of the starters. If Rowlet ends up going some kind of Oshawott/Tepig/Froakie route where its final form ends up being ugly as fuck, I'll go with Popplio. Inb4 it ends up going that route too. T_T

This is an smart and interesting way of seeing them, and shows a lot of potential. Hope they can pull off the concept with the rest off the stages.

Popplio will have best final form with sucky first form.

TeamLit is gonna get shitty final evo / possibly Fire-Fight and have mass exodus to Rowlet and Popplio despite having best first form....

Let me just prepare for the worst, and hope for the best...

I'll be so disappointed. Since Blaziken, all fire starters had cute starting forms (with the exception of Chimchar), and horrible final forms (the worst being Infernape). I'm really hoping that Litten breaks the chain, specially because I love cats so much and would kill for a cool cat starter.

I like these starters because it seems Gamefreak is portraying their cuteness/personality not by their initial physical looks, but by their animations. Even the starter page on their website has images of the starters moving around in addition to their usual portraits. They may look bland but they nailed their overall personalities.

I wonder if that means they're focusing on how pokemon animation; better idle animations, more attack animations... perhaps some variance based on their natures???

Maybe if 70% of Chesnaught wasn't that horrible beige-like color and was something less bland then it'd be loved. It just was a massive disappointment for a lot of people when the chespin line had real potential for something... something else. :S

Still, i think we'll have a similar situation with litten ending up as obnoxious as delphox, rowlet going to hell and Popplio delivering the badassery.

Much like how people complained about Greninja's "lack of bubble scarf", people miss the idea of Chesnaught's design. He is wearing armor with the ripened chestnut motif. No that is not his bare body - he is literally wearing armor, not just the backshield, and said colors match the chestnut colors which is admittedly bland.

The brown parts of Quilladin/Chespin are inside the armor, much like how the insides of a ripened chestnut is brown. It's one of those "themes that makes sense when you realize how it came from", just like why Altaria's typing is like that.

Kanto - Charmander (Done playthroughs with all starters several times though)
Johto - Cyndaquil (Done playthroughs w/ Cynda or Chikorita several times, Totodile just once)
Hoenn - Treecko (Not sure if I've ever done a Mudkip playthrough - I like Mudkip, but not a fan of later evolution stages)
Sinnoh - Turtwig (Also played with Chimchar, but never completed)
Unova - Snivy (in Black), Oshawott (in Black 2)
Kalos - Fennekin (actually Poké Banked all of them and kept none of them for the full playthrough. Didn't even fully evolve any of them.)
Alola (I don't like this region name) - Rowlet? (Need to see final evolution stages first)

This happens every gen I know I used to do it myself I remember when I was the gen 5 Starter I hated them then I was them in the anime and I was like a cute

One thing I really liked about this reveal was that they cared to show their quirks and approaches to battle and instead of just posting static art and saying "here's your grass/fire/water, bye".. It helps sell the starters as characters.

While I agree VI's male character design leaves a lot to be desired, female Gen VI is top notch and is above the likes of Kris, Lyra, and Dawn. And hell even I think Leaf is plain as fuck.

And please don't tell me you think the rivals in Gen VI are the trio. No, they are your posse. Your rival is the character you didn't pick (Calem/Serena).

Eevee has appeared in a main game in every region. You're more likely to be able to get it in this game than not.
