I'm in very big trouble and I've waited long enough for advice. Basically my resume is worthless. I'm now 27 and spent the last 9 years dealing with depression and anxiety. Bombed the first 4 years of higher education. Then I finally got a bachelor's degree in a field I now hate and never want to work in. I spent a year after graduating jobless and extremely depressed. 4 months ago I got a job in sales that I eventually need to get out of but I have absolutely no idea how I can ever get out of this mess. There's not much worth mentioning on my resume. I did some volunteering but it's only 7 days in the last 2 years, nothing before that. I have a couple months of work experience as a student but that's pretty much nothing over the course of 9 years. I can't even do much in Word and Excel. I'm getting even more depressed and hopeless than I ever was before which makes it harder to take any action.

What am I supposed to do now? Stay in my job for X amount of time before applying for something else? Start by learning Word and Excel? Do more volunteering? I'd love a government job right now but I feel there's no way I could ever get hired with such a horrible resume. It feels like even if I take action now, everything I screwed up before will forever make my resume worthless.

Learn Excel. Maybe Access. Excel is one of the biggest tools any business uses and if you can maneuver through it like second nature you'll be a huge asset no matter where you go.

As far as being worthless--not at all! You should probably stay where you are for now, as income is important and job experience is pretty big too--but don't give up!

Thanks for the advice. Isn't having your first real job experience at 27 a huge disadvantage though? I feel like I'll never get beyond the regular desk job with that history.

I did an interview today for Fry's Electronics for a computer repair technician job. The interview was very brief and I did a drug test so I think I got the job? He said he would call by Saturday if I did. I tried to give him more information on my skills but he seemed like he had made a decision before I even walked in. I've never been to an interview where the interviewer wasn't open to me expanding on what I had on my resume...

And then immediately afterwards I got a call from another place to go to an interview on Wednesday.

I get no activity for weeks and this happens... it's like they know.

Has anyone managed to leverage multiple offers? I've actually never in my career tried to do any such thing before. I've gotten verbal offers from 4 (pending on a 5th). I've asked them for written ones so I can compare them, but one is trying really hard not to give me a written offer until I get a verbal agreement. I'm trying to leverage them for maximum pay and equity (when offered).

I just want to say I fucking crushed it. I find out in two weeks if they're gonna hire me after going through background checks.

Two of the interviewers worked in separate divisions and they both wanted me. They made it clear it was a competition, fighting for these skkilllllsssssszzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Tell them you can only consider an offer if it's in writing.

So I actually have an inside track at that one. A good friend recommended me to his brother-in-law, the CTO of the company. He's told me basically their just waiting for me to "officially" tell them the about the other offers so they can beat all of them. I pretty much wowed them in the interview.

I don't know if I want to work for them (their tech stack is pretty boring, they're also owned by a huge corporation) compared to more exciting the startups that I got offers from.

Just graduated college with a BS in CS and am a little overwhelmed with potential openings from here. I have a fairly strong internship background in J2EE, Oracle, Python etc.

I'm applying to all sorts of OOP positions but I'm wondering how I should spend my free time. What languages should I be learning and how should I find projects to keep me sharp in the downtime?

I can't believe how anal companies are about wanting a degree qualification. You want an experienced project manager, right? How is 20 years experience for you? My degree wasn't even in that field so who cares that I never completed it.

So I was just interviewed and let me tell you it took everything I had to not laugh the interviewer out of the room. Angular/Bootstrap dev at $16/hour? To build a responsive profile page with interactive data tools and a tool to generate charts from analytics data in a week? Budget cap at $1000-2000?

So, a little while back I received a job offer via phone. I was informed I would receive emails and to respond promptly. Well.....I have yet to receive a email and that was a week ago I believe. I've texted people and they told me they would look into it and now I'm getting no responses. I'm extremely confused and feel crushed. Who offers a job and fails to follow up? I just find the whole experience so odd.

After receiving two more rejections today, I think I'm at my wits' end. I've been looking since the last few months of 2014.

I'm a lawyer with 7 years of experience, and I can't get anything in D.C. I need to somehow change my strategy, because this just isn't working.

I'm sorry to hear that. A lawyer with several years of experience should be able to find some kind of work. It sucks people have to make such drastic lifestyle changes like moving to do what they love.

Randomly got a text message from the department lead and she told me to call the Unit Manager because he deals with that stuff. It's just a mess.

Law has been tough in the last three or so years.

I have a friend who has been out law for 4 years due lack of success in landing a job in the industry.

He's finally starting his own firm. Can't join them, beat them is his motto.

I never cease to be amazed by the amount of Tech grads in this thread. NeoGAF calls to you guys like the horn of gondor I guess. Since I am here too but have a degree in business maybe I missed my true calling and should have gone into tech.

Or maybe we all went the wrong way and should have become surfing instructors or something.

I have an interview and exam on Thursday for a Digital Court Reporter job. Not exactly sure what the exam entails, but I would really love some interview tips as I never seem to move beyond the interview phase.

I always wonder if it's simply because of a numbers game ("We're seeing 2,000 applicants and we're only hiring one"), but I would at least like to know that I did everything I could on my end during interviews.

I just acquired my masters in computer science. I'm making good money but trying to find another job is a nightmare. Can't get my foot through the door. I've developed C#, WPF, SQL Server for the last 7 years professionally. Today I go on to the C# reddit section and there is a guy asking for advice on learning C# for his new mid level position.

Fuck me..

I asked this in the Internet Work thread, but has anyone used this Lionbridge website? I'm going to go ahead and apply, but I'm curious if anyone here has experience with it.

Just a quick life lesson, bros. Don't be a bartender.

olo, mind further elaborating on that one? A girl space friend of mine was interested in pursuing this.

I plan to hit up a few temp agencies this week, or maybe next. I recently went to a local adult learning center to get my WPM (words per minute) certified.

Give me all the data entry jobs!!!!! Or admin assistant....

Boy. It's times like this that I wish I had a more exciting option for cash.

After like 100 applications that got me only like 10 interviews, I finally got an offer for a pretty good job, that I immediately accepted. Fuck it. I'm done. No more applications for me.

I bartend on the side and the money is great. Though I'm also an graphic designer. I'll say that it really matters where you bartend. I would never subject myself to a place like buffalo wild wings or most restaurants. It takes self control and wit. Get in the right spot and you'll do a 1/3rd of work as most people with more money. Also, don't waste money on bartending school that say they guarantee work. Most bartenders learn from others as barbacks.

Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to pass this onto my friend. Even sounds tempting for me as well...

I've been a bartender for 15 years and have worked at some of the busiest nightclubs in one the the biggest cities in the United States. Bartending is cute when you're young, especially if you're female, but it's a fucking dead end as a stand-alone career. No benefits, no retirement, no gauranteed wages, working for and with drug addicts and alcoholics, the list goes on and on. I'll go to the grave before I let any of my children Bartend.

My fiance landed a great job in NJ, and today I have an interview for a government job in the area that would more than double my current salary. I have prepped as best I can, have good questions planned, and am ready. Super damn nervous though.

Also, if anyone has any interest in a recreation/tourism job in Little Rock PM me!

I Just got back from the interview and made the finalists. I hope I can get this job, really worried about the decision. Should I send a thank you email? I've never done this before but I really want this position so wondering if it's worth it and how exactly do I go about doing it? Do I type Thank You in the subject?
