Can't wait to virtually hold Rowlet

Me too!

I want them to do that more often too. Mudkip totally should've been Water/Ground from the beginning

It really bugs me that despite the Generation I Starters being the first Pokemon to introduce the Type Triangle, it's complicated right off the bat with Grass/Poison---I've always thought that dual-types weren't introduced too gracefully in Gen I, most of the ones you run into you won't realize they're even dual-types or how it applies without looking it up. The majority of Flying-type Pokemon you meet are part-Normal, and thus neutral to Fighting, for example as are the majority of Rock-types part Ground leading many to believe for the longest time they were immune to Electric.

But Poison and Flying don't effect Water or Fire, I don't think we'll see a Starter being with a type that would mess up the Triangle---so Water/Ground would be out since it'd have 4X to Grass.

Likewise we'll probably never see a Ghost, Steel, or Rock off the bat because they'd have an advantage over the majority of early game Pokemon due to being immune or resistant to Normal-type attacks.

True, but this isn't a very good first impression to make, especially considering how linear Unova (though in its defence of linearity, it's a much more fun game than Gen VI were IMO), and Kalos were.

We don't know how the map will play out yet so who knows, maybe they'll let us pick an island and it'll scale from there based on the number of badges you have. There's nothing wrong with linearity. Beyond gen 1, every game has been pretty linear with where you have to go and what order.

Think about everything kids have access to for free nowadays thanks to smart phones. If they get lost instead of looking it up they'll probably stop playing altogether. Ideally they would include an optional guide feature to help these players out like other Nintendo games instead of revolving the entire game around them though.

I guess so. I'm sure they've got their data to back them up. I mean I'd hope so, they better do. I just can't imagine kids not using their smartphone to look up how to progress, instead of actually quitting to play a retail priced game just like that. I sure as hell wouldn't have been allowed to do that by my parents, they'd expect me to get my money's worth out of the pricey thing I begged for.

Anyway, yeah, I guess I'm fine with Game Freak doing all that stuff if they were to make more of it optional, or on the other end add more options for experienced players. I mean surely those get frustrated too, but by the opposite thing.

To match Sugimori's artwork, that's what they've been doing since X/Y.

Ironically the cover legendaries don't seem to have been drawn by him for the very first time. Weird stuff.

Ugh, these are the worst starters I think I've ever seen.

Oh well, I'm still excited even though I don't have a 3DS anymore. Pokemon X was pretty great, and the remakes they put out a year or two ago looked aces too.

I miss the chibi overworld style already.

The old games overworld sprites were always chibi style compared to the portraits, in classic RPG fashion.

might as well be yokai watch now

I think if you asked most people what was better about Yokai Watch than Pokemon, their answer would probably be how the game looks. This is the most hype part of the announcement, as much as I love Hawaii and the starters.

And if this new style allows gf to easily add in Pokémon following you in the overworld would you change your mind?

I'm such a sprite guy myself, but it's easier to swallow when I remember I can replay the sprite-based Pokemon games. Considering I already replay at least one gba/ds pokemon game a year, I don't miss em that much

I'm so down for Moon. Good lord, that bat is awesome.

Will need to see what the owl and cat evolve into to make my final decision on starter.

Yes I would.

Although chibi Pokemon who are sized relative to the overworld scale and proportions would be nice, obviously 800(?) extra models make that impossible.

So if they return this feature, I will accept the compromise having a reason behind it.

If the main games never look anything like Pokemon Rumble, I'll be happy. I loath that art style.

I like what we have no much better than what we had in XY, which went halfway but couldn't get it right. That stupid running animation.

At least this one look coherent.

That might be the rival, or the mc before they receive their hat.

It would seem weird that it'd start you (or your rival) off without a hat since it's in the character creator.

Edit:
You had your hat off in the intro of XY too, don't look too hard into it.

Oh really? I don't remember that at all; when did you get the hat then?

Still I'd think if it's removable in the model you'd probably be able to choose to take it off.

They're trying to make it look more and more like the anime, which is better.

Nah, cause the Pokemon anime is terrible.

They should be rebooting it into more Origins stuff that's accurate tot he games, not restyling the games to fit the anime just because TV cartoons have easier proliferation than $60 games.

You're telling me that the anime's art style, the way it looks now, is terrible?

Sugimori's current art style matches what we see in Sun/Moon.

I don't like it, I'd rather go back to Gen V/Gen IV style, but I'd take this over XY.

XY(&Z) has been pretty great overall though. I really would not mind a pokemon game that takes inspiration from the episodic stuff of that series.
