Stellaris |OT| Imperium Universalis

The pdox team has gone through a phase where they said "wouldn't it be good if we didn't need map modes?" and it's only now occurring to them that they have functionality and that without them the UI is extremely busy. It's good they're enhancing the "regular" map mode but the specialist ones absolutely have their place for presenting critical information in a clean, no nonsense fashion. HoI4 is pairing it down to like 3 or 4 mapmodes or something tiny.

Yeah, it is very strange that they went this route, but I bet they will change their minds.
 
Are you building (and upgrading, maybe) spaceports? I had a fleet cap in the teens for a while but that blew up to over a hundred very quickly when I started dumping minerals into spaceports. And spaceports are cap-free planetary defense plus slots for energy and food generation.

To be clear, I don't think that "many cheap ships" is much more cost-effective than equipping ships with your highest tech weapons - once you start using your ships' utility slots you're probably going to be at least getting your money's worth out of upgraded weapons (although of course using high tech everything is going to require more power generation). But I doubt that it's worth taking the time to research those weapons in the first place until your other military techs are at least a tier or two ahead of where your weapons are. I think I'd research almost anything useful-looking before going for a weapon upgrade at this point, but even if you're strictly concerned with winning an upcoming war I think the right answer is almost always non-weapon military techs.

Oh so each spaceport on different planets adds to the fleet cap?
 
Although a good diplomatic map mode would alleviate much of the need, I've love a way to just toggle all alliances or people with military treaties together into the same colour.
 
I had a fun time last night. I finally got oceanic colonization and colonized an ocean world. Then I got an event that they found some ancient teraforming equipment and I YOLOd and activated it. The world turned to a desert and these worm things killed everyone and took over the planet and I lost it hahahaha.
 
Had the massive wormhole opening out of nowhere event, only to get message that the it had been destroyed just week later. Guess the invaders opened their doom portal in wrong empire's system, or thats a bug.
 
Is anyone using the ship builder? I'm just using "auto-best" when I build new ships in my spaceports.

I am. The "auto-best" mode is not always the best. And for destroyers and cruisers you can have a much more diverse weapon distribution, so it could help depending on the type of enemy you're facing. Plus you could decide between using more armour and different weapons or more power.

Yeah I have noticed that the auto thing doesn't seem to be doing its job.
 
I'm sure this stuff will just work itself out. I mean, it's on the other side of the galaxy so what could possibly go wrong?

It's not a problem for me, with about 4 empires on each side betweem me and it. Who knows where it'll spawn for you :D
 
I've got my ass kicked in both the games I've played these past couple of days.

The first time two bordering races boxed me in.

The second time was a lot more fun. I had one race bordering me to the south (it's space... there is no south) and our relations grew worse and worse as we kept pushing back and forth on each others borders. To the north I had one large race which left me alone (apart from the slew of insults) and then another race to the north which started an alliance with me. About 4 hours in the race from the south declared war on me and sent 5 or 6 8k power fleets into my homeworld; I was obliterated in an instant. My ships were only at around 900 power. Both times I played as pacifists.

Tonight... I will become to war monger -- these aliens won't know what happened to them.
 
I'm hoping that for a future expansion/patch Paradox implement mechanics where if the majority of your citizens have ethically diverged from your founding ethics they can attempt to overthrow your government to change your government ethics to something they like more. I'm already starting to get Xenophile populations appearing on my colonies as they grow (I can roleplay that as increased contact with alien species goes on people no longer hate and fear aliens). My government is Fanatical Xenophobe. Logically they would absolutely hate that.
 
Encountered Mharin Kharin on one of my frontier colonies, about four stages in and still not entirely sure what the endgame is there. Don't know how frequently planetary story events are triggered but there could never be too many, adds a lot of flavor to the world.
 
Any tips on fleet building? I've got two fleets, both just under 1k power. I thought I was doing ok until I poked my toe into a war and two of my allies were prancing around with 3k+ fleets and our enemy (which had an advance start, to be fair) had a 7k power fleet.

Is it ok to mix and match weapon types on ships? For example, my destroyers have mostly laser weapons, but I include a missile and mass driver pod on them as well. Or would it be better to just specialize? Kinda wish the game would just auto-do all this for me, but sounds like that might not be the most efficient option, from reading those earlier posts
 
So regarding frontier outposts. Can you use them to infinitely extend your borders while destroying the previous one? Say I have a line of 10 planets, can I build one in the first planet and get the border bonus, then build one in the second planet and destroy the first one but keep my border connected? Or if you go out far enough does the border thing eventually reset?

Also if you are up against a neighbor, can their borders swallow up yours (i.e. Civ style cultural takeover)? If so, how do you prevent this?

I think eaither approach is sound. If you do specialize, you need to have a mix of ships wth different specializations in the same fleet. That's what I'm doing. Missile batteris + energy weapon platforms = more versatility. Also, if you do happen to scout a fleet with an obvious weakness, you can spam out or divide your fleet witht he counter and probably not lose many ships.

You likely need to do more aggressive colony expansion and space ports to extend the size of your Navy.

I had that issue last night where I focused on extending the length of my empire as far as possible so I could break into some open sections of the galaxy. Which made it difficult to manage sectors effectively and and my Navy size was smaller since I had skipped over potential colonies that were too close.

So regarding frontier outposts. Can you use them to infinitely extend your borders while destroying the previous one? Can anyone tell me how you actually invade enemy territory? I declared war on my neighbor, but I can't access their borders. I have hyper-lane FTL drives.

I guess my question is, how far out can I build an outpost before the borders stop connecting to the rest of my realm?
 
Early game is soooo good and packed with events, I'm concerned about the mid/end game. 'There's not as much happening' is a common refrain.

Though that feels weird to say, given how other Clausevitz games sprinkle events fairly sparsely throught the years, and many times you find yourself on 5x watching some bars fill up.
 
Bought this last night and then accidentally played into the early hours. First game started next to a pair of Militaristic Fanatic Xenophobes, so scrubbed that and started another, which is going along alright.

I do wish some of the UI stuff was a little tighter, unless I'm just missing something to let me build Surface / Ship stuff from the galaxy view, or easily see systems with habitable / colonise-able planets.

Just like CK2 I'm sure I'll still be playing this in 4 years, long after this stuff has been fixed.

This is fucking with my mind! I'm an Elite Dangerous player and its the opposite there.
 
The 3D Galaxy plain is really starting to annoy me. It's frustrating not really knowing what stars are in what empires at a glance, instead you have to rotate the galaxy or go over and check each individual star.

I hear there is a 2D Galaxy mod, may have to give it a try.
 
How on earth do you upgrade transport ships? Not seeing the option in the ship designer, and a bunch of my armies are cut off from the rest of my warp 3 capable empire. Is it a tech thing?
 
I haven't been using auto build, but I have been just loading my ships up with the best of the best without diversifying. Will adjust for my next play through.

I'm assuming when you set up multiple ship designs you select which design you want to build in the spaceport?

I upgraded my spaceport to level 2 so I could build destroyers but they aren't showing up in the build screen or in the ship designer. What else am I missing?

There is another research you have to do. I forgot the name, but it actually allows you to get destroyers. Just getting to level two isn't enough.

Paradox takes feedback very seriously for their games, it's how their games are shaped and supported in the long run.
 
I lost my top scientist and his science ship, they just lost contact while surveying uncharted worlds. The report speculated that the ship lost control and crash landed somewhere.

Since that happened, I don't have the influence to hire another scientist, I still have an ungoverned sector, and one of my pilots got promoted to admiral taking up my last leader slot.

Any advice on how I can accelerate influence growth and expand my leader slots?
 
I know some people are hating on the deck system for technology research, but I love it. It adds some RNG flavor instead of "rush this tree, rush that tree, then go this tree..".

Probably true. I've been fairly focused on pushing my borders out since the land(space?)grab is still going on, and there are a few planets within my borders I haven't colonized yet. Some opened up due to planetary colozization research too. Guess I'll focus on that now, since I saved right before declaring war

Likely early on it is a good idea to expand laterally and ensure enough habitable planets are under your control, but at one point you need to focus on spamming colonies for density. This is based on merely my first play through though, so may need to experiment.

Going by the ship guide linked, your average numbers will likely dip as there is a good chance you will be using weaker weaponry, but you will be able to directly counter the opposing fleets ships.

I figured as much. The wording for tech that gives level 2 spaceport is a touch misleading then. Kinda wish I had those 300 minerals back.
 
Paradox just put out a statement surrounding the controversy that has crept up (some stupid conspiracy stuff by people) about the IGN review and Rowan (the reviewer).

Basically people think there is some conspiracy with IGN/Rowan and a vendetta since it's a review that is in contrast to the majority of reviews/opinions and the statement by Paradox believes there is no such vendetta/conspiracy and that people must quit their nonsense.

We very rarely (if at all) comment on individual reviews. We feel that we should be involved only up to the point of showing/providing our game to reviewers and then allowing them to have a free hand with their articles from there. However, unfortunately in this case it seems we should make some comment on Rowan Kaiser's recent review of Stellaris; or more accurately, the reception of it.

Firstly we'd like to address Rowan's suitability to review the game. Contrary to a lot of opinions we've seen posted, Rowan is a very logical choice by IGN. Although, yes, we would disagree with the lower-than-liked score that he eventually awarded us, he does have experience of our previous titles and has over the years provided his professional opinion on those, too. It would make sense that IGN would make use of his experience to review Stellaris.

The second and perhaps the most important topic is a supposed conspiracy suggesting that Rowan would have a personal vendetta against us or our games due to his/our relationship with other game critics. This is categorically NOT the case. Those named in said conspiracy (including Rowan) are professionals in their field and we are absolutely confident that such feelings would never colour review content.

Finally, we'd like to go on record and say that we value the freedoms of critics to make any review they see fit. It's best for the consumer and, ultimately, best for us. Although we may in some cases disagree or be disappointed by a review, this doesn't detract from the fact that reviewers should have absolute freedom to give their own opinions of a game, free from external duress of any kind.

We have no hard feelings to Rowan, and we would really appreciate it if others wouldn't elect to have them on our behalf! You can likely count on seeing Rowan's name on reviews of our games in the future, for better or worse. We trust his integrity absolutely and he will certainly receive review code from us in the future.
