Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

This is based on the original PC version, not the enhanced 360 version. The 360 publisher would have paid for those enhancements, so the developers do not own the rights. So, fewer characters, no 3D graphics, no English dub, no arrange mode.

But the developers have gone back to the original and added new content, so this is effectively an alternate enhanced version?

what's the deal with that? didn't snk publish the 360 version, or is there some other issue?

oh, I see. It's only on Wii? That would be nice, but i'm not sure i want to plug in my wii just for it. might as well just go with emulation on my pc.
I'm actually curious how pc emulation compares to m2's work on the wii version

Oh wow I'm double dipping hard then! Its like owning 2 special editions. The arranged mode would be a loss as would the new cast but its not like they couldn't swap in new characters to take over those shot types anyhow.

Really glad more is coming. I know there was one dude online who was a megafan that used to write about this game who covered its history who will be beside themselves over this news.

Anyone have an opinion on Strikers 1945+ Portable?

Came back to this today after being away for a while and I'm feeling a bit sour about it. Bullet patterns feel super punishing, as is typical for psikyo, but the issue I have is that there isn't really any room for learning. The game expects you to know bullet patterns from the very beginning. I mean I can just use infinite continues to go through the game but that just feels dumb.

Gradius III is driving me crazy, and I'm playing the Gradius Collection version at the easiest difficulty level and with save states... Stage 7 is too much for me :(

Whatever's cooking, it's in good hands with M2...

A new Aleste would be sweet! Just noticed Raiden V is up and its 50 bones. mmmm...thats a lot of money for a digital only release. I'll have to think long and hard for that one.

picked it up super cheap because it was strikers 1945, why not? to my dismay, it was not strikers 1945

you should be proud for even making it that far

It looks like I may have some spare cash to pre-order PS4 Caladrius, but I'm still on the fence. It's kind of difficult to find shmup reviews and impressions for previous versions of the game. Briareos Kerensky didn't seem to care for it, but I'm not ready to write it off yet.

So, shmupGAF, what's the word? What would you compare it to?

The possibility of a new Aleste game...and a new Wild Guns game...all announced on the same glorious day...and the new Doom actually looks great...

Pinch the fuck out of me, GAF, I must be dreaming. While awake, typing this post, and drinking fake Red Bull and ice. So, I'm not dreaming, the world really is this beautiful.

lol went to buy Raiden V and seen it priced at a lofty €50 (yes I was pissed at Darius too but that one only had a physical release on Vita... and I didn't like the game on PSP and iOS anyway so I was less enticed by it :P)
FIFTY EUROS. For a digital-only STG in EU. Get fucked, Moss. I may as well import the JPN/Asian release then, especially since it got the english dub patched in.
I feel bad not supporting an STG which has been brought over but the onus is in them.
I will double dip when it's on sale then (for €19 tops).

Late getting back to this but figured I'd follow up:

Zanac x Zanac (Zanac Neo, one of Compile's best games ever) is -- despite what PS Store tells us -- downloadable directly to the Vita.

Rejoice.

Awesome. I see it's on NA PSN too. I originally got it off JP PSN back when it was still exclusive.

Noobish question

Have all (or most) of the Cave Japanese 360 exclusives come out on Steam or other platform?

Trying not to buy a J360 if I can help it.

The only J360-exclusive Cave game on Steam is Mushihimesama, the other two Cave Steam games (Deathsmiles, plus Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu/Resurrection which isn't out yet) were released overseas for X360.

They only committed to 3 PC ports upfront and have yet to confirm whether they'll continue porting their back catalogue to PC.

I think the only J360 release that still doesn't have a US-friendly release is DOJ. Ketsui's region-free on PS3 and Mushihimesama's on Steam. The rest of the J360 library (unless I'm forgetting any) are either region free or have a localized release. There may be a few pieces of DLC here and there that are hard to get in the west, but nothing too major.

Oh this looks awesome. So you don't have to do the PS3 trick of transferring it over?

Is there any chance to see Raiden V on PC? I will gladly buy it a Steam or UWP port...

By the way, RefRain is out: http://store.steampowered.com/app/435970/

I've been waiting to play this properly ever since I played the demo five years ago. All it took was finally having the tutorial translated in English - the mechanics are far less complicated than I thought.

Use your shots to charge a special attack meter that can be launched up to 4 times in a row - every rapid press produces a different shot pattern, and levels 3 and 4 seriously make you feel like you are the boss in a bullet hell game.

Collect items to charge up a bomb attack that destroys bullets for score and recharges your special attack meter. This means you can face down kaleidoscopic bullet patterns that flood the screen, without fear.

I love the cyclical kinds of shmup mechanics where you constantly juggle the replenishment of different attacks. I also love the virtual reality world and the aesthetics of different computer-desktop menu interfaces for each character. The developer, RebRank, excels at a sleek, clean visual presentation that's exceptional among indie developers.

It's more probable than a PS4 release, with MS backing them and the whole cloud/Azure's focus on the game.
I still think some kind of version will make its way to both PC and PS4 but it might take year(s).

More impressions on RefRain. You can pull off some amazing things in this game:

- Store up enough firepower to kill a boss in one shot.
- Use a heavy wave of enemies to earn three extends in about 10 seconds.

Also, there's a point-blanking mechanic to let you collect items faster.

Nah. Of their 13 or 14 360 releases (depending on how you look at it), one is also available on PS3 (Ketsui), two on Steam (Deathsmiles, Mushihimesama), and one is announced for Steam (Daifukkatsu, unknown if the Black Label version of this will also be available).
