Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

How newb friendly is DARIUSBURST? I'm tempted to pick it up from GMG, but I suck at SHMUPS.

Get it on principle for the price alone. Its the first time its ever been that low and any DLC thats out makes it a whole new game every time given how drastically different the game plays with new mechanics.

As for difficulty its not bad. Its not like a Danmaku that goes all super kill and its got hundreds of stages. Literally lists it as having 3000+ in the trailer itself. Largest shmup ever? Yup. Ability to make all the stages a fresh experience with every DLC changeup to mode mechanics? Yup. Worth it.

Ah, fuck it, I just bought CC. Even if it won't run I at least supported a modern shmup. :)

This is my first PC game in over 15 years. Yay.....? :)

The guy working on the R-Type animation short uploaded a nearly 3 hour video on his animation process. A few seconds in there's some footage from his work on R-Type's most famous boss that I did not see in other clips. Also, this seems to be the first video on Youtube that I've seen with anything on the R-Type short. Everything else has been on Twitter.

Eschatos is the shit but Eschatos + Judgement Silversword is THE SHIT in all caps.
Two of the most fun games I've ever played in the genre.

I still haven't touched Cardinal Sin so I can't comment on it

What are the must-have shmups on the Xbox 360 store?

Digital only?

Grab Akai Katana, Deathsmiles IIX (the North American compatible version is only available through Games on Demand, no physical release), Guwange, and Raiden IV. I think Under Defeat is on GoD, too.

If you don't have a PC, also grab Ikaruga and Strania from XBLA.

Hello all. I got a question related to Gradius 5. When I played it back in the day, one thing that the game did that blew me away was rotating the level. It went from horizontal to vertical, then rotated again to a diagonal.

Has this been done before Gradius V?

Uh, Salamander/Life Force 1 and 2

Been playing Darius Burst Chronicle Saviours with all the DLC ships and it is incredible. Didn't think this massive game could hold anymore content but sure enough these different ship mechanics make the game just crazy. I can replay the game over and over and its like a new title every time. Plus there are all these defender missions and boss fights that came to challenge with these packs.

Just played the Crimson Nightmare fight vs Xray and its so pretty.

rayforce meet darius

If you didn't get this game on the sale make it a priority next time it goes up to nab it.

The X-Ray vs Crimson Nightmare boss fight was awesome to me too. I actually celebrated when I got that sucker on the 3rd RayForce area.

Now I'm trying to beat GTB with the XRAY in the new SEGA DLC pack and it feels damn near impossible... The X-Ray is by far the most powerful ship in terms of how much damage it does with its red lasers, but the damn thing has no defenses so it's one of the hardest ships to use in longer fights. But I love the ship so much. I'm also liking the TRY-Z as well. I Still don't know what the hell I'm doing with the ship. At least it doesn't confuse me as bad as the OPA OPA.

That and I've never beat GTB before.

Also, I hope they keep it up with these DLC packs and eventually put all the higher end bosses in there as options. I don't do well at all against Gigantic Bite, GTB and that stupid Thousand Needles (and variants) and Glutton (and variants).

Sad that I've almost put a 100 hrs into this game and still suck at it, but damn. The game is fun and I love the music (and flow of music) in the stages.

I hope there is a Taito pack 2 with RayFORCE and hopefully other surprise guests as well.

Maybe a Dodonpachi Pack?

I don't know if this is the best place to ask, but I don't know where else to put this, so:

I'm trying to set up Cho Ren Sha. The game runs fine and everything - but it has a moderately weird default gamepad control setup that seems to be unremappable. Using something like Xpadder doesn't do any good, since there's no way to override the game's standard gamepad controls. Does anyone else have experience with playing this game on a gamepad?

I've been tracking the sales of Deathsmiles and am super interested to find out what the next Cave game on PC will be. Any news?

Degica commented on shmups forum that another game announcement was coming "soon", then qualified something like 'depending on what you consider soon'.

I don't recall having any particularly weird gamepad issues, but wouldn't be surprised if that is the case and my memory is just shit. Will double check when I get home this evening and report back if nobody else has in the meantime.

edit: ah, right, all it lets you do is flip the two buttons. Quick/lazy Google shows that Mame (Mess) has, or at least had, X68000 support. Could try getting the disc image running there and use its bindable keys.

Cave hinted on twitter that the next port could be Ketsui. Hopefully it's true!

Was it just that one random Ketsui quote tweet that could have been about that mobile game thing?

I would love Ketsui but it seems like a slight stretch to me as they'd have to start... more from scratch, so to speak.

why would they have to start from scratch?

I'm assuming they wouldn't be able to use 5pb's work on the Xbox 360 port, and they don't have their own PGM hardware emulator.

They could start with MAME, I suppose, and come up with some neat interface and all that, but even that's more work than porting from 360 to Windows I'd imagine.

fake edit: wait, they must have their own PGM emulator because they released Daioujou on iOS. Still, porting that to Windows while adapting it to Ketsui seems like it would be more work than a fairly direct 360-to-Windows port.

hmmm, I just assumed that wouldn't be that big of a deal with degica already established a relationship with 5pb with the pc release of phantom breaker.

regardless, I'd assume it would probably be something that was cave-developed for 360.

On one hand, it would require more work than porting one of their 360 games. On the other hand, it's one of the few games still locked to the Japanese 360, and it's a cult classic. Having Ketsui on Steam would be sooooooooo good.

Good point that I didn't realize. Hopefully the case!

It would be wonderful, for sure. Selfishly I want Ibara (which is probably more effort than any of these), but Ketsui or a DDP makes the most sense.

it's region-free on PS3 too :o

Gradius IV did that briefly in the final level.

Enough of games released last gen. Gimme Dangun Feveron, Dodonpachi, or Progear.

any huge R-Type fans of the original here?

i've been playing it the last few nights coming home late from work.

my challenge: for anyone who knows what i'm actually rambling about, has been to knock out the unreachable turret guns on top of the stage 3 battleship...
XWRmKwUl.png

they're almost unreachable bc the screen and ship movements forces the R-9 under the battleship not allowing you to get above where the guns are located. by the time you get around to top, the screen has scrolled pass the guns making it too late to hit them.

i've been jamming my force unit up there to take out those guns and try using the force unit to try and kill the core engine early before the boss music starts.

Nice challenge. I'll try this in 2D graphics mode of R-Type Dimensions, on 360 or PS3 later.

This person seems to be a huge fan of the original R-Type, look at his collection.
