Can You Explain Why Tomb Raider Reboot Gameplay is So Good? Because I Can't See It.

FlyinJ

Douchebag. Yes, me.
I enjoyed the reboot, but the input lag in Rise completely ruined the game for me.

I can't believe how bad it is... and input lag has never bothered me before.

This is the worst.

It could at least pretend not to rely on detective vision.

The worst so far was when I went to retrieve a med pack from a wolf, and Lara hints that you'll need to figure out where it went, and you hit L2 and there's a pillar of gold reaching toward the sky proclaiming HIDDEN LAIR THISAWAY.

I hate it so much.

I'm not sure the gameplay is especially praiseworthy, but I think the game is a nice mix of exploration, combat and collectibles, with some casual puzzles thrown in. For me, games like the Tomb Raider reboot or Assassin's Creed are the gaming equivalent of comfort food.

They're not particularly compelling games although fairly playable. I got the 2 games fairly cheap so I wasn't too bothered. The presentation is shite outside of the pretty nice graphics. There's nothing endearing about any of the characters. If you split the charisma of say Sully or Elena into 5 or 6 parts they'd still be more interesting than the entire cast of TR2013 and Rise. It's alarming how rubbish both games stories' are and I'm not exactly head over heels for Naughty Dog either. These types of games aren't mechanically rich enough to get by without a good story/writing. I finished Rise because I wanted to see the graphics of the next area. The story developments actually took away from my enjoyment lol

Either bump up the writing and have a nice charming adventure along the way or take it back to the old Tomb Raider where progression is actually a challenge in and of itself. None of this in between shit. And for the love of god no more collectibles. They added fucking sidequests now holy shit

Gameplay is the least of its issues. Its the unlikeable characters, awful dialogue, and brutal tone that has taken the adventure out of the series and turned lara into a self centered murderous bitch more then ever. Crystal Dynamics then waves their flag about how they've made her into such a strong female character. It's just eye rolling.

Yep. The gameplay is fine. The weapons and controls are fun.

The dull, dreary, histrionic story was what ruined the game and the reason I don't get the Uncharted comparisons.

Tomb Raider is probably closer to The Last of Us then Uncharted. And not just in a they had the same idea: take Uncharted and give it a survival horror twist at the same time kind of way. In a so many very specific things happen in both games, one had to be straight up copying the other.

I mean:

-Kill Bambi
-Rebar to the stomach
-Hanging upside down and having to shoot enemies coming after you
-playing a section while gravely injured
-scavenging for materials to upgrade your weapons

Kinda specific.

great points actually. But then again, Last of Us is also sort of a logical extension of Uncharted as well. Take out the platforming, make the shooter aspect tighter, throw in moderate survival. Not to say they're the same game.. just that it's easy to see the experience of the Uncharted games in Last of Us (which was released the same year as Tomb Raider)

Compared to uncharted , TR has better puzzles, variety in combat options, more open levels, but story/cinematic is not as good. If games that are not as good as uncharted mean they are not good games I don't know what other good games you guys are playing

They're competently made Uncharted clones that are high on spectacle. I think they're well made for what they are but if you expect anything else you're going to be disappointed.

I agree with the others who have said TR has better puzzles and combat but worse story/characters.

Didn't play the original reboot, but loved ROTTR.

It fees better than UC1-3 for me. Haven't play UC4 yet.
In fact I can't get back into UC1-3 after playing TR 2013. Shooting, or even moving, just don't feel right.

It's great, but that doesn't mean it's for everyone.

No need for us to explain it to you, it's just not for you.

No game is for everyone.

Pretty much. The game play is responsive as hell but if you disagree, you disagree (it's not my job to convince you).

I preferred TR2013 to Uncharted 1-3, but Uncharted 4 is such a huge improvement over those, I'm really interested to see how I feel about ROTTR when I play it later this year.

What gameplay ? There is no gameplay...
Compared to the first one in 1995, it seems that tomb raider now feels completely as uncharted where it's all about QTE and shooting phases between boring story.

I got grudge sucked!
I found the combat of RotTR to be tighter and more enjoyable than the first game, and more enjoyable than Uncharted 4 to be honest. UC4's traversal though was far more involved than either, which is funny considering where both series began.

I have to agree. I loved the original Tomb Raider games but the newer ones have become Uncharted clones. I do like the bow and that most of the puzzles require more thought than Uncharted. Also, the set pieces do require a little more player input.

The story and characters are utter garbage which actually makes the game feel worse than Uncharted when they are actually not. The original Tomb Raider in the 90s was great because of its sense of exploration which is missing in the newer games.

Please do not let me serve on a jury. I am actually a crazy person.
I can't quite explain it, but it's the first "shooter" that ever clicked with me.

I was watching my friend play this on Xbox about a month ago. I thought it was so cool and engrossing for the first hour or so. Then I noticed it was just the same thing over and over again and the enemy AI was not good. I've also wondered what people found so refreshing in it.

The basic gameplay mechanics, on their own, are polished. It controls better than most TPS games. Combat encounters are extremely mediocre and super easy by design. That appeals to a certain crowd, like the combat in Assassin's Creed.

I had a lot of fun with Rise of the Tomb Raider. I like the traversal and stealth mechanics better than Uncharted 4. The guns are more satisfying in Uncharted 4, but almost everything about the gameplay, I prefer in RotTR.

However, EVERYTHING else... presentation, story, setting, locations, etc... Uncharted is far more interesting in all of those areas. In the end I say Uncharted is a 9/10 game, while RotTR is 8.5/10 for me.

Have to decide where QB fits in there. Sometimes I feel like I'd put it just below Rise, but sometimes I think it's my GOTY so far, even after just having played UC4 (and having played QB on PC pre-patch).

You're right, the game isn't that good.

It's bland as hell, and the best part of it (stealth via the bow) becomes irrelevant in the second half of the game.

What are u talking bout? Used bow thru the whole game no prob. Game is outstanding, nuff said.

It's definitely not free of jank. In my few hours of playing I've already seen Lara spaz out and fling herself off platforms more than a dozen times. Her entire model seems to fold in on itself when you jump to a platform the game doesn't want you to be on. She makes this little hup noise and spins into origami.

I also hit a bug in one of the DLC tombs that would not allow me to progress.

I never had those issues. But I wasn't speaking to that as much as design decisions that make the game feel Janky. Like obtuse or difficult puzzles that the mechanics can't support, or poorly communicated sections of the game.

The first has better combat than the second.

The first has great offensive melee tools. You can close the gap via sand and double roll, and use the invincibility in finishers ala Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 to really just wreck house. It's a lot of fun. The second game has no invincibility so trying to have fun is suicidal.

The actual gunplay by itself is pretty standard, but it's at least snappy and enemies react well enough to your shots. I feel like they react more immediately in the first than in the second. The AI is too easily duped in both games by the bow and silenced pistols too.

M&K really trivializes the difficulty. Definitely prefer gamepad here.

And both games benefit from having a set weapons inventory, and no "cover button," which is already a step up from Uncharted's bumble-fuckery.

Positive: It's Uncharted with upgrade/customization mechanics. Not being able to carry all of your weapons as once as well as upgrade them is probably the biggest issue I have with Uncharted. If only Drake could equip both a shotgun and an assault rifle at the same time.

Negative: It's Uncharted with upgrade/customization mechanics. And much worse characters and storytelling. Love or hate Drake and crew, even their casual banter can be entertaining.

Rise is a totally different beast in that it tries to keep everything from TR2013 but remove the Uncharted aspect. Meaning combat is incredibly, incredibly easy (ammo, crafting materials, and exploding barrels litter the floors of what few arenas there are, and even then the enemies rarely put up a fight compared to the original). Uncharted 1-3 and TR2013 on standard difficulty are likely more challenging than ROTR on its hardest option.

I think the reboot Tomb Raider is a fine game, but can agree that combat can fall a little flat with time, though.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is a huge improvement, though. Stealth is more viable, greater weapon variety, and some fantastic sequences. Not to mention the improved puzzles, exploration elements, and outstanding presentation.

I really like the reboot series. It doesn't have the production value, story, and characters of Uncharted, but I find the core gameplay itself to be superior. I like the crafting and new tools/weapons that open up new areas in each sandbox (it's Zelda/Nintendo-like in that regard), and at least CD includes voiceover for notes you find and things you discover on collectibles. Also, both TRs compelled me to 100% them. I finished 1 playthrough of UC4, and while I thought it was an incredible experience, I feel zero desire to jump back in to get everything I missed. I moved on the day I finished it and went back to my Dark Souls playthrough.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is literally the worst game I've played this gen. The Order had more satisfying shooting mechanics and encounter design than that awful game.

Story was utter shit as well, Crystal Dynamics needs to read a book or something.

Then the Ubisoft collectathon lite is the worst game design ever conceived in their own games and it's even worse in one aping them.

At least the first tomb was fun ... for the two minutes it took to complete.

All of the upgrades and RPG systems in the world can't save Rise.

I totally agree with the OP. TR2013 is very playable, which I think is what drove me to finish it 100%, but it's also quite forgettable, pretty much copying every popular feature in AAA games today. The crafting, XP, and bonfires felt completely unnecessary to me. The open world was a huge missed opportunity if you ask me. Instead of being a Metroidvania attempt that turned into a Ubisoft open-world game, it could have been more like a Zelda clone or something, actually focused on exploration. Actually, Mega Man Legends 1 is probably the ideal template for modern TR to follow.

After thinking about it for three years there are two things I really dislike about TR2013:

  1. Adventure and puzzle elements are almost completely gone. I enjoyed Tomb Raider Legend, Anniversary, and Underworld for their puzzles and platforming. Tomb Raider to me always felt like an adventure game in search of good action combat. Modern Tomb Raider is just another typical action game with the occasional puzzle.
  2. I don't like the whole "survivor" angle. Mechanically it isn't even a survival game for starters. More importantly though it's just too gritty in my opinion. Modern TR and Lara take themselves too seriously. Uncharted is better written and Nathan Drake is a much more likeable character, partly because both have degrees of levity to them. Lara is serious and covered in dirt and blood all the time. I understand thematically TR needed a reboot, but I prefer old Lara's personality.

I decided to pass on Rise of the Tomb Raider. I just watched a longplay because the graphics where the most interesting aspect of the game. Might get it on sale later this year just to look at it if I can snag a 1070.

I loved the first one and I am suprised to see the praise for ROTTR from Gaffers that haven't played it. I don't want to stop the hype train but imo it is far from being an improvement :/

Story and characters are worse and the environment wasn't even close to the highs the reboot had.

I didn't really care much for it. It wasn't horrible and I didn't hate playing, but it felt like I was just going though the motions. Definitely wouldn't recommend anyone to play it.

Whoever said the gameplay was good?? Its servicable, like everything else except for the graphics. The puzzles and encounter design are poor as all hell. Game was a on-off that could exsist because uncharted left a vacuum.

I agree with those saying that the gameplay feels solid and polished, at least as far as controls and feedback goes. Even climbing is a lot of fun in it even if it's mostly very simple. The developers put in some great work on their animations.

Like so many other shooters it just becomes bland so quickly because they overwhelm you with combat. Once Lara is running around with machine guns and shotguns, shooting down hundreds of experienced soldiers, it loses the feel of surviving against the odds. Not only that, the constant combat wore me down as it became incredibly repetitive. The final third of the game is packed with increasingly boring combat, and the final hours is just one scene after the other with running and shooting at mostly identical enemies.

For all these epic set pieces, I was having a lot more fun just walking around the island when nobody was shooting at me, because they made a pretty good job making the island feel like an interesting area. Some of the optional tombs were also pretty fun to solve. I wish the game would have put more faith into those quiet scenes instead of execution animations and a boring upgrade system. That said I realize that I'm not the target audience of the game, so what can I do except complain about it on Neogaf?

Edit: The recent Eurogamer "walking simulator" article about Uncharted comes to mind. I've never played those games, but I feel like TR2013 could have used about 100% more walking simulator time (ratio) to improve its pacing.
